Hey Tobias, thanks a lot for all your enriching tutorials. And this one stands out as the best so far. I am over 40 and playing with younger players requires a proper strategy rather than just the energy. One of the best or would say the best badminton channel to comfortably rely and learn from. Thanks again for such high quality lessons. (I play at KBK Copenhagen and loved your video on your visit to Copenhagen Denmark 👌)

This is the way I got used to playing. Not being an excellent smasher, I turned to a very interesting game mode: control. As is well explained in the video, the goal is to minimize your efforts as much as possible and tire out your opponent as much as possible. Excellent analysis which clearly shows that the balance of power in a sport is not only based on raw offense.

This is amazing. Love the multi camera view of you talking, and the big screen with the rally replay. It was very helpful to understand your commentary. You described the goal of the rally very well and also explained the purpose of each shot, or series of shots. Definitely it's physical to play back to the same corner, but it's also a lot of mental tactics, as you lured the opponent into thinking they could attack, but it all played into your strategy. Also good that you showed a rally that was not completely flawless, when you got into a bit of trouble, as opponents can turn the tide during rallies too.

Tip 1 : Force your opponent all the way into the corners Tip 2 : Avoid hard smashes early in the ralley Tip 3 : Play the same corner multiple times Tip 4 : Use short deceptive drops from the rear court Tip 5 : Wait for a bad decision by your opponent (then use it against him)

Thanks for the helpful video Tobias. However, I wonder what is the best way to get out of this situation as oftentimes, your opponent can do the same thing to you. I reckon that perhaps, this could be a training match for the player in blue (to train his footwork/shot decision) as he did not always play the optimal shots. E.g., at 1:09, he was already pushed to the back line; I guess a straight clear or even a straight drive/ neutralizing shot would have given him more time. That cross-court drop basically let you dictate the game from then on. At 3:37, this is probably when he could have salvaged the point hadn't he gone for that loose smash? Could a committed straight smash or a punch clear be less adventurous? Also around tip #3, I think he gave you too much freedom to send him running but this is when I thought it could be a training for him. He was not late to the shuttle but his return is kinda strange. A bit too leisurely I'd say. Again, fantastic video as it is exactly what most players need. I hope you could give me some directions regarding those thoughts above.
@tobiaswadenka84352 жыл бұрын
Thank you and great points you mentioned. I think all of your points come down to two things: decision making and shot quality. As you mentioned, in some situations another shot would probably be a better choice and would have made it harder for me to dictate the ralley. On the other hand it always depends on the shot quality. For example the cross drop in such a situation could get the opponent on the wrong foot and get you out of trouble or in a good situation but therefore the shot needs to have good quality (tempo and placement). The big problem: when you get tired both things, decision making as well as shot quality, go down most of the times, also because most players do not really train it that much together, we focus on quality and tactics OR on hard physical work. To get better in that situations you need to combine both things in the training and try to keep focus and quality even under extrem stress and pressure
@andrewzhang53452 жыл бұрын
I think something you aren't talking about is that you didn't actually do anything special or noteworthy in this rally. There is just a clear skill gap between you and your opponent, and given such a gap, it is inevitable that the rallies end up looking like this. It would be more interesting for you to analyze your strategy against someone better or the same level as you.
@tobiaswadenka84352 жыл бұрын
To give some context: that Talley was towards the end of training match after an intense session and I felt that my training partner already got tired or was more tired then me. That's why I decided to not go for the points (usually I love to attack and go for it) but to play rallies as his shot quality and speed went down. Of course that tactic is a lot harder against opponents that are stronger, in that case I would usually also prefer another playing style with more speed, a smaller court and shorter rallies, more about that in the next video.

Do you sometimes serve forehand serve (high or low)?
@tobiaswadenka84352 жыл бұрын
In fact yes, sometimes I add in high forehand serves when my opponent is not too dangerous from the Attack, the shuttle is a bit slow and/or the opponent is already tired. That can provoke a lot of easy unforced errors or bad decisions

Tobias, man, you don't read minds in your free time, do you? 😂 I was thinking about this yesterday, wondering how to win points if my smash isn't the strongest and I fail to capitalise sometimes on weaker lifts and open court. This wil help✌️ Edit- Right. It did help. So, percentage play is what I need. Same corner multiple times, no hard smashes early on, stay patient and play occasional drop shots

@Justlookingaround196 ай бұрын
At 2.56 the opponent played a back hand return that is way too quick this caused him to not have enough time to return and tobias could easily move him around. I feel that many singles player do not vary the speed of their shots. People always think that a slower return would put you in a disadvantage but this is untrue a well placed slower shot will put you in a good position to attack or defend.

If your defense is weak slow the game down so you have more time to react, the opponent in the video is returning every shot at full power that's very bad unless you are a very quick player. Do not rush as this is singles and not doubles.

Nothing makes me feel worse in badminton than when someone is fitter than me. However if I’m the fitter player I just know I’m going to win as I can dictate everything. If you’re tired you have to try winners/smashes. It’s your only chance but this is a bad tactic. I miss the days when I would never get tired lol
