This is how I made a font using vintage porcelain film letters. These letters were used in the days of 8mm and Super8 film, when you wanted to do in-camera titles. You can use MANY techniques to make your own font. This is the site I used to make my font:

I make regular videos thanks to direct support.

Oh Crafs.... you gotta fill those notebook pages up baby! Put some doodles on the paper. Don't let them go to waste! Also Procreate has opened up SO many possibilities for artists like myself. To those who can't do an iPad price, but can get an iPhone, they also have an almost-perfect version for your handhelds too to use (and if you have a phone touch stylus similar to an Apple pencil with a fine tip you can draw on your screen too!) I've got a few fonts I designed a decade plus ago. Now that there's a place I can take my hand-drawn ones and put somewhere digitally, that'll make it SO much easier. Trouble is I've got like...30+ sketchbooks to go through now to find them. XD Thank you sir! Keep the rain coming. We just need like a 3 hours of rain and your voice video to put us into a comfortable Rip Van Winkle sleep.

I work with fonts every day at work. The sheer volume of them is overwhelming. I learned early on never ask a client what font they'd like to use -- with all the choices available, they'll get stuck in analysis paralysis and everything will take ten times as long. Instead, I ask clients what emotion they'd like their font to project. Happy, scary, sad, elegant, etc. After I find that, then it's just about finding a font that speaks to me in that way. Happy Craftin'!

I found the same issue as well. I don't even mention it because it takes forever to just to sift through 5k+ fonts on my system. The worst is trying to match an oddball font that someone brings on a low rez .jpg saying they don't or can't find the original art.

I've been meaning to use it for the purpose of making fonts, too. I wanted to make my own font for comics to get around Licensing rights (important to be aware of if you plan on selling anything with a font). Also you can use things like Illustrator (or inkscape or many other vector based software) to make your font as well.

I enjoy your stuff crafsman. Something to clarify though. TYPESET and FONT. typeset is the actual design of the lettering, the shapes, sizes ,etc. FONT is the creation of the typeset using SOFTWARE. Typeset isn't covered in the US by copyright. FONT is very much protected by copyright. It's all about how the FINAL creation is done. If it is created and executed USING computer software..its a font. Letraset is the original creator of dry transfer lettering. It opened up a whole wide world of creative possibilities for graphic designers.

I love it... but aren't those letters the property of the Hernard Company? It's their font right? Isn't it copywritten to some extent? Even if the copywrite has fallen through and the company doesn't exist anymore, isn't this still technically using someone else's work to incentivize people to join your patreon? I don't know, just seems weird even if its legal at this point. You did put in enough work to make a font out of it though so it'd fall into fair use I suppose... and you're not explicitly selling it... so, I'm not sure. As a Graphic Designer, maybe I'm just being overly sensitive about it.
@TheCrafsMan
@TheCrafsMan 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Zac! I actually do think about stuff like this. In this case it started out as mostly wanting to digitize the letters from the physical ceramic sets I use very often, so that I would then have them in a convenient digital form. Then I figured I'd make a video ABOUT that. I always feel good about making stuff available to Patreon supporters when it's 100% from scratch (music, sculpts to 3D print, etc.) but I admit freely this one did sorta bug me at first. Definitely not something I would sell outright, but I guess you could say making them available on Patreon might be a form of selling. With it being old letters used to title vacation scenes shot on 8mm film, I didn't think of it as cutting in on the profits of another company. I was further inspired by a font I recently purchased called "National Forest", which was based on the lettering seen in router-cut national park signs around the United States. If Bell & Howell or Hernard sent a cease-and-desist, I would 100% remove the download (and probably the entire video), but as far as making a Steady Craftin' font, the old ceramic film letters felt like *THE* best example I could use.

@@TheCrafsMan Great explanation! It's good to hear you consider this stuff too. I 100% understand, making compositions out of pre existing photos even weirds me out sometimes. Really neat walkthrough of your process! I was interested in the title sets and where they came from so I did some digging. It looks like the Bell & Howell set was based on ATF's Alternate Gothic No. 2 archive.org/details/1923AmericanTypeFoundersSpecimenBookCatalogue/page/n481/mode/2up?view=theater. I wasn't able to find a match for the Hernard set, but it looks like it might have been a bolder version of Blair? (ATF also sold a heavy-weight version of Blair called Mitchell but it doesn't quite match. archive.org/details/1923AmericanTypeFoundersSpecimenBookCatalogue/page/n513/mode/2up?view=theater) Sackers Gothic is a modern version that's pretty close as well!

I use a lot of vector programs and I agree with the "variations" thing. I love distressed typestyles, but I often will rob bits out of other letters to make the similar characters look different in my design work. Only when its really important or the client is paying top dollar for a design. But low ballers get what they get. Most of the time they don't even notice the patterns.

When are you putting some of your Lo-Fi crafsman tunes for sale? I need them in my life while I'm crafting! Whenever I get the mail I still have a little robot voice in my head "mail call"....
I promise this story about fonts is interesting
