@EricEllenbrook7 жыл бұрын
A tip for those who have issues pouring. Stick a stir stick, scrap piece of wood, or even a gloved finger into the jar and then pour the contents onto that stick. The surface tension will make the liquid stick to the object and go into the jar rather than stick to the side of the container and go all over your bench. I learned it by being around chefs in the kitchen!

Would this finish work with a sanded down epoxy tabletop
@WoodByWright3 жыл бұрын
If you're saying a table top that has an epoxy coating on the top of it then no. The epoxy is the final finish on it and it shouldn't need anything else. If you're talking about a table that has an epoxy fill in one place or another and would in others then this would work. However this is not a durable finish and I really wouldn't want to use it on a table top. Usually my go-to in that case is Rubio monocoat It is one of the easiest and most enjoyable finishes to apply and it looks just like oil density oil and paste wax when it's done. But it is very protective and will give you years of a great surface.

Thank You, I had no idea such a thing existed, Im a noob at woodwork, made a desk and varnished the top. My Initial Finish was so ugly and upon googling i found out how to get it smooth as glass by sanding down using rough to smooth water papers in that order. Got that right and smooth as glass but the smoothest paper I could find was 1200 grit and the last bit of scratches though smooth were just not coming off with a machine polish. Back to google i found another video showing a wooden floor repair using a product called Wipe On Poly, so i googled again and thats how I found your solution, I made your solution using Lacquer Thinners and Polyurethane and the desk is looking great now just gave 2 coats so far, will give another 2 coats and Im done and the nicest thing is it doesnt take half a day to dry, it's dry within 30 minutes. I tried 3 different big name hardware stores here in Cape Town, South Africa and the smoothest water paper i could find was 1200 grit at only one of the stores and neither of them had "mineral spirits" but looking at the comments I assumed Lacquer thinners would work and it clearly does work with the glossy finish Polyurethane.

That can cause a problem. If you have stain on first, you need to make sure that fully cures. Otherwise, the center in the poly will reactivate the stain and move around. Thanks for the share 👍🏻 Did you ever try to make some kind of Danish oil ? Do you have any recipe ?
@WoodByWright7 жыл бұрын
I have. my favorite is to mix equal parts Miner spirits, Poly, and BLO but then I do two top coats of just wipe on poly. But, I think there are more recipes then woodworkers out there lol

Hi. I'm very newbie with this issue, and I'm wondering: doesn't this mixture need hardener at all? So, is this PU 1k or 2k?
@WoodByWright4 жыл бұрын
no hardener needed. the polyurethane will harden when the thinner evaporates.

What's Mineral Spirits? I'm from Aus and don't see that here.......is it same as Mineral Turpentine? Cheers
@WoodByWright7 жыл бұрын
yup in AU or NZ it is called mineral turpentine. for some reason there are all kinds of names for it where ever you go. White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine(AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum),Varsol, Stoddard solvent

Got to be careful buying some of these now, some white spirits in the uk are some cheap chinese stuff for cleaning water based paints, check you buy the real thing.

Do you know of any examples of the two compared to each other? I doubt there would be a difference in the look, but I'd be interested in seeing the comparison.
@WoodByWright7 жыл бұрын
I used both together on my cabinets int he kitchen and I can not see any difference at all. once the thinner evaporates all that is left is the poly, and it is the same recipe in both.

If added with linseed oil refined or boiled then comes up with same result as minwax tung oil.
@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
yup. there are a ton of other mixes that different people like to make that way.

Can this be applied over boiled linseed oil (BOL) once cured? How long does BOL take to cure?
@WoodByWright7 жыл бұрын
yup. drying time depends on the type of BLO the type of wood and a bunch more factors, but it does not need to cure to put it on. I normally wipe off the excess BLO then wait an hour or two. overnight is usually far more than needed, but again it all depends on other factors.

Could you mix poly, spirits and tung oil together for all coats? Presumably equal volumes. How long of a wait time between coats?
@WoodByWright4 жыл бұрын
sure. general poly mixed with oil is considered a tong oil. it depends on the mixture but anywhere from 4 hours to over night before the next coat.

you can mix a ton of other things. some people mix in BLO or other varnishes. but I do not like to get that fancy. there are more recipes out there for finish then woodworkers. LOL

Great video(now I have to try translating the ingrediants into French.) Already, I asked about "boiled" linseed oil and the sales persons huddled together, and then thought I was nuts...rr

LOL sorry man. I have been told that BLO is hard to come by in Europ.
@parkarlsson79557 жыл бұрын
It depends on where in Europe, for example in Scandinavia and most northern countries it is easy to find. Linseed oil is called "huile de lin" in french :)
@rick914437 жыл бұрын
Mais huile de lin bouilli n'exist a pas ici....The boilded stuff they've never heard of...Thanks, I've lived here 34 years(so I do speak the language, lol)...Seriously, there's a big gap in the hobby market between n.America and here in France. Don't know about the northern countries but do have Norwegian Relatives...cheers...rr

I've heard of others using your same recipe with the addition of linseed oil; any benefit or reason? Also, could you use the water based poly and cut it with water, or does that not work as well? Thanks for the video!
@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
Yup. If you add BLO it is a type of Danish oil. It is not needed with waterbased poly as you can already wipe that on, bit if you want it thinner, yes, water is what you use.
@superdukedad6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Another question...we have unfinished hickory cabinets and our plan was to just seal them to leave the natural wood characteristics exposed. I like the idea of water based products, but heard they don't penetrate hard woods as well as oil based products, is this true? Is that as important with poly as it it stain?
@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
the idea of "penetration" is commonly over blown. even the best oils only penetrate a 1/1000 or so in to most hard woods. Unless you are talking about raw linseed oil which will slowly penetrate over weeks or months as it takes that long to cure. it is true that water-based finishes do not penetrate as deep as oil finishes, but in hickory that is around 1/10000" difference. not enough to worry about. if you want that raw wood look then water-based poly is the way to go. it is a durable finish, and as clear as they come.
@superdukedad6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for all your input!!! Took a crack at it tonight on a relatively simple piece and all your advice, both here and in the video, was a great help. Thanks again!

Can you mix water based with water 50/50? A funnel works wonders BTW lol
@WoodByWright7 жыл бұрын
you can, but the water-based is already easily wipable without too much mess. thanks. Funnels are for sissys! LOL

Thanks for the video. For understanding, what does boiled linseed oil offer to the strength of the finish? I see you are mainly using it to thin the formula but is there more to appreciate about it?
@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
it is not BLO that is mixed in. the thinner is just that a thinner. it allows you to put on a thinner coat. that slows the coats to be cleaner and smoother.
@calebsmith26716 жыл бұрын
Hey, is it ok to use the homemade wipe on poly as the final top coat? I've seen forums/videos that say to use diluted poly for the base coats and then use regular undiluted poly as the final top coat. Are there any major differences? Have you ever done a side by side comparison? Thanks!
@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
There are a few people that say that but I find it to be total baloney. It's far easier to mess up a thick top coat. Most people out there just stick with a bunch of thin cotes you get the same protection but far easier to apply and less chance of large streaks
@calebsmith26716 жыл бұрын
Sounds good. Thanks!
@MMAFreakofNature6 жыл бұрын
I get the theory but when you thin it youll have to apply twice as many coats to achieve just straight poly. So is it really saving money when youre just applying 2x the coats?
@WoodByWright6 жыл бұрын
The savings is in comparison to buying "Wipe on Poly" not straight poly.
@MMAFreakofNature6 жыл бұрын
@@WoodByWright oh god duh haha i was thinkin that was wipe on poly this whole time. Sorry haha
