To my namesake, what I love most about this passion of ours around penmanship is how they become an extension of ourselves, like a guitar to its player or a football to a footballer. I have used pens since my primary school days. I have just added a few more to my collection, nothing that is over the top price-wise, but the love is similar. My pen is an instrument I can discuss with friends for days on end but one I have no plans of sharing with others. Let them get theirs! Watching from Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa.

I like your video and it's ideas and have shared it with friends and relatives in the hope that they will be inspired to put down their devices and pick up pen and paper. Thank you.

❤ for me, the act of riding with a fountain pen is an act of romance…. It brings me to a time and place of elegance. It is a way for me to engage in that elegance in the midst of our hectic, modern personal and business lives. It is so satisfying to take out a pen, unscrew the top and with a flare jot down notes, signed documents , share with a colleague. It’s one of life’s simple pleasures. Thank you for your content.

Im of the old school, pen and paper (fountain and 90gsm paper). It's very difficult to find someone to write to anymore. People usually dont give out their addresses they now have email addresses or user names on Social Media. I now journal and have for years, so with that said I write to my self. I am astonished that young men and women have no idea what a hand written letter is or what a fountain is used for. Great video.

Completely agree with your points on problem solving and letter writing, and especially on note taking. Besides creating good vibes, it's also well documented that handwritten notes make you remember things much better. That should be all the reason anyone needs to write by hand and a perfect excuse to get those fountain pens out of the collection and into daily use. Swap them round, use a different one each day of the week or month or for each type of task, whatever works for you. I choose pens according to what I am doing - wouldn't take a posh pen to a workgroup or a cheapo to sign a contract. And I love capless for note taking, not least for the puzzled looks they get ;-)

Putting pen on paper has always been a way of gathering and focusing my thoughts on a subject, preparing for a meeting or seminar, brainstorming, journalling, planning doodling etc.. I simply use my pens all the time. Fountain pens are first and foremost a tool in my life since my school years. The Parker Vector was the cool pen of choice in high school for instance (30 years now). I have always been writing with a pen first and then digitalize it if needed. I have my TR paper planner, a gazillion of highly FP friendly notebooks, ink bottles by the hundred and an array of fountain pens to write with. That is my happy place 😊 my me time or my organized self on paper first. As you pointed out, it is my constant conversation with myself and it even is my therapy as I journal away. I simply cannot function on digital alone. There is something about the act of putting pen to paper that is not only pulling me together and relaxing but also comforting for me; like home if you will This video is a refreshing one from you since you seem to be more about collecting pens. It’s good to see more highlights about using your pens. And I mean no offence to any collector who prefer to not use their pens. To each it’s own

My fountain pen is probably how I passed some of the courses I took in school. I always disliked writing because so many pens are so underperforming, and writing things down helps me retain information so much better, but I was unsatisfied using a mechanical pencil or ballpoint pen, so then I switched to my fountain pen and a notebook with paper suitable for fountain pens, and it made such a significant impact.

I use fountain pens for almost everything that needs a pen. I write a journal entry every morning. I use my Montblanc Slimline from 1989 in my Filofax which accompanies me every day. I write quick notes with one of the fountain pens from my 3-pen case which, likewise, is always with me. If I give someone a card, it will be written with fountain pen. I talk as much as I possibly can about my "hobby". I use a ballpoint occasionally - mainly where I want to be sure that something will still be legible if it gets wet, so addressing envelopes is a prime example. Everyone who knows me knows I come with a fountain pen attached. I think talking about our hobby enables other people to share information about their hobbies and that can only make everyday life more interesting.

I currently have seven pens from my fountain pen collection inked with several different colours. In meetings I always took out my Graf von Faber-Castell platinum plated Perfect Pencil and made notes and ideas in a William Hannah A4 binder. Ink is fine if you don’t mind people reading your notes, pencil is more difficult for people to read.

By combining pen hobby with functional EDC, routine personal journaling and note taking. Furthermore, documenting daily things on paper, because lest be honest, paper documenting is extinct! For example, so many times I get disappointed at a restaurant waiting for the tab, only to realize that the receipt requires an electronic signature therefore I can’t show off my fancy fountain pen. In addition, I work in an office environment were everything is electronically documented and signed, making the use of pen and paper irrelevant. In contrast, even though electronic documents are counterproductive for the pen hobby, it’s still a good change for the elimination of waste for mother nature 👌🏽.

Yeah I want a fountain pen for each of those different activities. Hahaha. Maybe you could follow up with another video recommending what we should consider for each of those activities. That would helpful for me to consider what I should get. For important milestones like signing your hire paper or business transactions or anything financial I see a montblanc or any holy grail pen for that aspect. How about for like secondary business transactions like signing your restaurant bill or something ordinary what would be a good EDC pen for that?

Samuel, we need to keep fountain pens, and all pens an essential part of our lives. I read today in the WSJ that signing receipts, documents, contracts etc. is slowly fading away and being replaced with electronic signatures. Credit card companies no longer require your signature on the receipt. Writing is no longer taught in many schools and some young people actually do not even know how to sign their name.

Now if i refuse which I do , they get annoyed , if I lend my Fountain Pen they dont know how to writw with it and Spoil the Nib with too much pressure! I have to keep 2 pens One Fountain and other Ball Pen to lend! As a result its hectic to manage two pens in Pocket so i dont keep any of Pens to avoid situation
@grahamluther93942 ай бұрын
Sadly, this is a very usual scenario. However, time to take control of their expectations! 'Sorry, I don't have a pen you can use', you say. They may get arsey, when clearly you have a pen on you. It's not your problem, your pen is your pen, for your convenience, not for theirs, for starters. Bit harsh? No, it's not. Say 'you don't use a fountain pen, so you have no clue how to use one, otherwise you wouldn't be asking and getting arsey with me at the same time'. Others are: 'If you think telling me you've left your fountain pen at home, lend me yours, is going to work on me, you've just lied to my face! No fountain pen owner leaves themselves without a pen on them for starters, and how come I've never seen this fountain pen of yours, ever?' Now is when you just keep going. 'So then, tell me about this fountain pen of yours (let the word 'supposed' almost write itself in smoke on the air and practically materialise). If they think they've got you by having memorised some details about a pen they looked up online, you can ask them why they like their nib. They'll be arsey, you've got em, they know it but think they'll wear you down. You may get 'look, just hand it over, why do you have to be so difficult all the time?!' You ask them why they keep on doing this and want to pick a fight every single time, why don't you learn from the last gazillion times that you only get the same reply each time?' You use a scrappy ballpoint, I don't have a scrappy ballpoint on me to loan you, end of. A fountain pen is a fine writing instrument, they're so unrelated to a ballpoint, it's like night and day. I'm happy to write that urgent thing you've just remembered, down for you, after you've apologised of course, but I'm not your personal pen servant that follows you around with your ballpoint. What you write with is not interchangeable with what I choose to write with. End of. Would you lend your ballpoint to a caveman drawing with mud and a stick & tells you (or rather grunts at you) that your ballpoint is the same thing as his stick and mud, so hand it over? Same thing here! The answer is no'. Of course, you can give me the non-refundable cost of a new nib unit priced at 2/3rds of the whole pen, at today's price of course, in cash, right now, actually PayPal it over, and when I've received the confirmation, then you can borrow it. But first you have to go through the training course, which takes an hour. Then, when you can repeat all you've learned in the course back to me you can borrow my fountain pen, under supervision only. By then you'll have forgotten what you wanted to write down. So all the better to carry a ballpoint on you then, as you always seem to need one. Nothing prevents me from enjoying my fountain pens. And no non proved fountain pen user is getting their mitts on 'something fancy' at my and my fountain pen's expense. This reply is from my wife who tells me that you can cite 'I don't use filthy public ballpoints, and I doubt you washed your hands for 20 seconds whenever you last did and don't look at me like that, you keep starting this, the answer is no, or you know the conditions! It's very clear - do want me to write it down for you, or not? Oh it's not that important? You mean you asked to borrow my fountain pen for nothing then? Just wasting my time eh, because I didn't just hand it over last time? Well actually, I had a good time, good job we're friends eh?! If you're not by then, then they get to look stupid for ending a friendship over a pen you wouldn't loan. Why not? Because it's their fountain pen. Then everyone gets it. The scrappy ballpoint team and any fountain pen owners in the group being told what went down will come out in their, your and the fountain pens defence. 'Ha, ha, everyone knows you don't lend your fountain pen, don't blame them, surely you know that from them? Maybe you might if they're a fellow fountain pen user too, but absolutely not, if they're not!' You just have to be firm, stick to your guns until its clear in your circle that this is how it is with fountain pens. They're interactive and not disposable. They don't write on everything, we don't want them to either! Sure a ballpoint will write on toilet paper and serviettes! If you want to, that's your prerogative! It went on a bit but my wife's now developed a come-back for practically every situation like this. In 20 years, my handwriting had become illegible, she was sick of it, so was I. She said she could improve my handwriting in ten minutes if I took what she told me seriously. In a year I now own and love my two fountain pens. 'Only a Kaweco Sport and now a TWSBI demonstrator' but it's like night and day having and using them (and almost full access to my wife's ink library, just not discontinued ones with a low amount left being the only caveat). Hope this bolsters your resolve and gets you using your pens around family and friends again. They can all go with you to a pen show and try some out for themselves perhaps or you can gift them a Lamy Safari on next gifting occasion and bring them in from the cold, dark side of the 'disposable/promo' ballpoint'. 🖋📖 💌
