"Have you heard about the silent pianos?" Sounds like an opener for a joke. :)

I live in a Apartment and I recently upgraded my piano to a yamaha ydp arius-144 its a great piano but it's really loud, my neighbors would get really mad when I played, they bang 3 times as a sing for me to shut up, one day I ignored them and this old lady came out and yelled at me.I got headphones and thought that that would sole a problem, as soon as I started playing with headphones they still got mad I didn't know why, then i realised that they can her the piano key's when I pressed then, now I cant play piano at all, idk what to do.

0:48 omg thank you!!! I'm a 4th year piano student and the practice grands are way too loud. I wear shure se215 IEM's as ear protection. No idea why I never thought of setting the desk on top of the lid. I am totally doing that from now on!

Lived in a high-rise with a keyboard, plugging in headphones is always possible. However, the 1 neighbor directly below seemed to be bothered by people pulling chairs at the dinning table, walking to the bathroom or the flushing sound of the bathroom at night when the tenant has already gone to bed but never once complained once about music being too loud. The keyboard is in a room with wood panels. The building superintendent was called a few times to investigate. The keyboard even with the volume all the way up was never the problem... strange...

Very helpful. I have also found that throwing a duvet over the piano dampens the sound effectively.

I work in a small local grocery store and we've got an upright piano and every once in awhile players will come in and it's always the good players that like slammed down on the keys and play really loud and we end up not being able to hear any customers so I'm going to see if I can just lock the middle pedal like you said and hopefully dampen it so that would be can actually hear our customers

Thats a great idea, putting the music rack on top! Thank you! However I don’t want to scratch the finish with micro scratches by using a towel to put the music rack on. What is the best cloth to put the music rack on top of the closed lid? Felt or velvet?
@PiotrBarcz5 жыл бұрын
Those 2 are some very soft textiles so you could use them easily. You could put the felt down on the piano and the velvet on top of the felt. That way you won't get scratches and you'll have velvet hanging around the piano.

All good tips! There is also sound-proof paint that you can apply to your walls that the average consumer can afford to have applied, that's not nearly as costly as having the room professionally sound-proofed.

Super helpful. I’ve been playing my Steinway B for 20 years and the sound is getting too bright. I’m going to get it voiced, but in the meantime these tips are great. 👍

Black felt fabric cut to fit over strings of a grand piano. Thoughts?
@rogerg49163 жыл бұрын
I stuffed pillows into all the openings under my grand piano and it reduced the volume about 50%. My piano tuner suggested this and said that it would not harm the piano. There is also a company that sells foam sound dampening inserts for this purpose.

How do I go about getting a mute rail installed on my baby grand? I called a technician and he had never heard of a mute rail for a grand.
@hugeshows3 жыл бұрын
I need a way to make my piano completely silent - but not when it's being played. Let me explain... My piano resonates sympathetically with my sound system and creates weird wolf tones when I'm listening to music. Is there some sort of mute bar I can install across the strings to prevent this, that is easily removed when I want to play? Surely they run into this problem in recording studios too.

Good advice. I actually have a silent piano, but as a classical pianist, apart from literally learning the notes of a new piece it's useless or even harmful for pianist, so I'd not recommend that, rather some kind of soundproofing the room.

I have a Baldwin studio that's too loud and bright. I've needled the hammers and put cardboard across the back, but it's still loud. My tuner said that's just the way it is. What can I do? Can you offer me a deal to MAKE me say yes to buy a grand piano?

A Baldwin that is too loud and too bright? You've got one of the seven wonders of the world most Baldwin's I've played I find have two soft or muffled sound especially in the upper register of keys. Not to mention they tend to be so heavily weighted that I'm exhausted after one song.

Last time I had my YamahaU11 piano tuned, the tuner recommended some type of carpeting or other material cut to the size of the back (facing the wall) to tack on to the piano. She said it would help with moisture issues and dampen the sound a bit. I wouldn't mind if it could be a little more mellow-sounding. What do you think of this?

I accidentally discovered the mute pedal on my upright and i find it fabulous for practising more discreetly. But I worry that it might damage the strings especially when i forget to unlock it when im finished. Should i be concerned?
@rogerg49163 жыл бұрын
No, the mute pedal does nothing to the strings but soften the impact on them.

Is there a way to make a Piano louder
@LivingPianosVideos4 жыл бұрын
There are several ways to make a piano louder. Certainly opening the lid of a grand piano or the top of an upright will make the piano louder. You can also take the kick board off of the bottom of upright pianos. If a grand piano is on a rug, put a hard surface on top of the rug to reflect the sound (Plexiglass works well for this.) The piano can also be regulated to achieve more power. In addition, the hammers can be reshaped to avoid a flattened surface which has less power. The hammers can also be voiced with hardening agents for a more brilliant sound. You can speak with your piano technician about some of these techniques.
