You know the old story about how someone played a solo campaign necromancer, and then later the DM had a second party play through the wake of his events? Inspiring. Here's a theory template.

My players write my game passively. My players constantly utter the mantra; "Don't give the DM Ideas." Unfortunately, despite repeating this so often, they so rarely take their own advice. Many a plot development has happened because they had loose lips in my presence. Heck, right now, they're **supposed** to be conquering Mount Celestia to rescue it from its over-reaching ruler that even gods fear. Instead, they decided to go down to the Nine Hells and into my version of Tiamat's divine domain to slay the evil dragon gods. I've had to rename my campaign "Cosmic Superheroes". Also, at some point, per a running joke of theirs, they will need to fight the Encounter Box.

@@CaptainOrlax Allow me to piggy back off that Call it the "Senzu Bean" challenge. You can flavor it to be anything, for example: A God offering a Test of Strength and Worthiness. Essentially it's your idea of a guantlet that gradually increases CR until a monster eventually gets the TPK. But After every fight, they walk through a door or a portal to the next fight. Everyone is healed back to 100% and regains all spell slots and supplies used in battle. It's different from your typical D&D monster guantlet, but I think it sounds unique and like a fun way to just slay monsters for hours while testing the strength of your characters.

And how did they ever plan on doing any of that? Gods don’t have stat blocks for a reason; and would easily one shot your entire party on their first turn, so fighting something that even they are afraid of sounds like a very bad power game that breaks A LOT of rules lmfao

While this sounds super fun and a way to have other people contribute to the story making process, it honestly sounds like more actual work for the GM. setting up all these mini sessions, mashing things together. Like super fun, but its not a labor saving exercise.

It can be though. Let's say there are three towns that a low level adventure party can travel to. In the first, they know a Lord is heavily taxing his people suddenly, and using the income to build war machines, but nobody knows why. Another road out of the starting town goes through some dark woods that the most superstitious pumpkins say are cursed, but for like 100 years, there has been a town that way that harvests local flora/fauna to spin into amazing silks and other materials, but a few weeks ago, the starter town stopped receiving visitors from that direction, and anyone who has ventured to the next town hasn't returned. Only 2 people where expected to be back by now, so no one is TOO worried. But with the fact that no new travelers have come from that direction in weeks, coupled with the people that usually go down that road to trade and have not yet returned, it makes some rumours for the party to overhear. Now there is a 3rd road out of town that goes to whatever the main plot is supposed to be. Whichever road the players choose, the other 2 paths become stronger. If they go to the cursed woods, they may purify them. But the Bloody Lord in the other direction now takes over more villages, expands territory and army size, as well as wealth and influence in that area. If they go toward the Bloody lord, they can beat him at lower levels, but he had only taken over a single town. While they did that, the newly transformed Lich that had taken up refuge in the "cursed wood" consolidates his power over overt unloving thing in it's domain until it has an undead army. If the party follows the ACTUAL plotline the DM had in mind, then everything is fine, but they might keep hearing rumors about a Bloody Lord consolidating his power to the North, and some....Cursed Army rising in the East. Bet they'll have to deal with both of those later! That's my DM style. Plant the seeds, and keep watering the ones the players don't take care of. Maybe they take care of your main quest eraly. Then take care of the Cursed Wood at mid level. They're gonna lose their minds when they barely defeat the Bloody Lord at level 20. They lie remember that that WAS the main quest, because you've been plugging him (and the other 2) since the beginning. Edit:sorry, I know my thumbs are huge and I'm on mobile, but I hope you get my gist.

@@stevenclark1662 I'm not quite sure what that has to do with my comment or the process outlined here? My point is that the effort it takes to run the mini sessions he describes, and arrange time for them to happen, ends up being more work for the GM not less. though it sounds like a lot of fun to do it. Your process sounds like you are still doing all the world building, you just have world elements react and change to what the players do. Which is what i think of as the standard approach to GMing.

My personal understanding is that D&D is an improvisational exercise with a rule system, and the DM as a troupe master of sorts. The players experience the story, certainly, and the duty of the DM is to herd them to an enjoyable experience, but the players are just as much contributors as consumers, so thank you for this sir.

To be fair, this also provides a really good framework for creating campaigns in general. Like if you're stuck with coming up with an idea as the GM you could just play the role of the players in this concept to make up your game and have a good framework to tackle things in chunks. Also sidenote, but a fun thing to keep in mind with the bishop character you mentioned, is that even if the party uses something like Zone of Truth or high level insight checks to determine if he's lying, if the Bishop legitimately worships and believes everything this BBEG says, then as far as he's concerned, he'll be telling the truth. So that can help spook the party a bit along the way.

I have a version of this I made a day after seeing this video. The rolls are the general, the Guardian, and the king. The king makes the plan. The guardian makes the base of the dungeon (example king is a lich so the guardian is a necromancer. The guardian says he wants the dungeon to have lots of traps and skeletons. so the DM makes it full of traps and skeletons) the general is the one attacking. ( example. King is a lich attacking a village for more skeletons for his army. The general can make a anti paladin that is the one attacking while the king is at home watching runsmith videos)

This sounds a bit similar to the ars ludi experiments, (like West Marches, Kingdom, and Microscope) where you can create entire timelines and settings cooperatively at the table.

Done something similar in OVA, but instead of giving them extra characters, I just "asked" them for informations like "what do you think that npc would do in that situation?" or "what else can you tell me about that character?" It took them 2-3 sessions to figure out that they are circle bamboozling each other.

I always only open what the big bad wants. How it’s gonna get it depends on what the players do. If they ignore it, big bad can keep going until it’s going to inconvenience something they care about. That makes it literally impossible to derail the campaign

I gotta say, I've been doing something similar to this in a game I play in, I've been chatting with my friend, the DM, of this game, about a corrupt character whose whole worldview is twisted, your mad bishop as it were. He's a doctor who has been conducting tests and trials by medicine and magic to try to find a cure for the undead plague that has been consuming the world. He wants to save the world, and he's on the right track because one of the last living angels in his dying world is backing him, and a powerful and resourceful network of informants and assistants who are willing to help him in exchange for him sharing his research and whatever blessings he can. The twist: the plague is a curse caused by dead magic and wild magic, which his tests have been making slightly worse, making those that rise more powerful and easier for necromancers to command. What he doesn't know is that he's been dominated by a powerful succubus who has him living half in an elaborately constructed illusion. Instead of a holy champion, the doctor is a warlock with an infernal pact making an already powerful fiend even more so, and has nearly given her the power to cheat her way into a dead god's mantle. His support network is by no means his, and are actually an association of thieves, spies, and assassins who work with his patron for mutual benefit, and dark mages who actually worship her as a goddess, playing the part of a charitable organization, though are simply more warlocks who follow the same fiend. In your example I've been helping to flesh out the Mad Bishop (The Doctor), the Queen (The Succubus), and the Council (both The Church and the Assassins Guild). It's awesome when I see things that I helped make happen unfold, even when they're happening to my character, who has almost died because of it more than once.

I expected to explain the technique where you simply listen to the player's chatting and theories and their backstories and formulate a campaign from that. This is way better and seems way more fun.

The only thing I've done close to this is giving my players a worksheet on character background and adventure ideas that they picked from. This is a great idea but holding back the meta gaming I think would be hard.

I think to avoid metagaming you tell them to make the evil characters a little vague and change any of the really specific parts, so if a player makes a puzzle or a combat encounter with an obvious weakness tweak it a little. The block pushing puzzle should still be a block pushing puzzle, just a different one.

Literally was playing something like this as it was uploaded. DM had us all roll up a human and a kobold. We ended up playing as the kobolds escorting the greedy humans played by the DM through a hazardous path to backdoor a young dragon's hoard. No one trusts anyone, but we need each other to get through to the end. So far we finished half of this quest and we are down 3 of the 6 human wizards and 1 of the 6 kobolds.
