Hey Marquis, I'd be interested to get your thoughts on how an agency that has multiple clients and team members working across multiple clients would use Asana to operate Scrum. Is there a backlog per client on one large backlog with a client name custom field? Is there a sprint project per client or one sprint with all client work in it? How would stories work in these instances? Each client is going to have stories that are different from others. Should you have a [Client name} Story custom field or just lump them all into one custom field? Thanks for any feedback or resources you're able to provide.

Great question! Like anything, this would require testing, but I’d start with a separate client backlog for everyone. You can use the new ID tag custom field to classify each client and then add each client item to a master sprint board by multi homing those items/tasks to the appropriate sprint period and lump them into one. Then you can have the ID field to see which client they’re in. You’d also be able to use the “Projects” field, but IDs could serve as a quick reference for you. Hope that helps.

Hi Marquis, thanks for the great video. Question for you: I am building a new product, so I have hundreds of user stories. In your example, would your stories be more like epics? Seems like this approach could be tedious if I had to make a label for every story ("Story 1", "Story 2", ... "Story 150"). Or is that just what I need to do?
@MarquisMurray
@MarquisMurray 3 ай бұрын
Good question. I’d say that at the time, this is what you would have to do, but you can now use ID tag custom fields to generate the story numbers automatically when items are added to a sprint. Look into that to see if it would work for your use case.

I have a hard time seeing this translate well for those of us who project/product manage physical products. Asana aside, do stories or scrum for that matter work well with consumer goods industries?
@MarquisMurray
@MarquisMurray 10 ай бұрын
I don’t know enough about the Consumer Goods Industry to confidently answer this question, but the use case can be applied to many different instances, it just depends on your measure of effort and buyin from your team. That said, I can definitely see the development and the fulfillment of products being worked into the scrum methodology. Would just take some of panning.

Nice tutorial Marquis! I've gone through both Jira and Asana for Scrum Project Management. In my opinion, I find myself biased towards Jira as it seems to have native support for Agile Scrum project management. Have you had a chance to compare Jira and Asana for the same Scrum process? One important aspect that I am not sure how to tackle through ASANA is to maintain EPICs and Release versions and its relation with User Stories and tasks.
@MarquisMurray
@MarquisMurray Жыл бұрын
Hey, great question. No, I have never used Jira and am not sure how it compares, although I hear from engineers all the time how much the love it. For Epics, I’ve used either the portfolio to manage these or projects. Then you can add your user stories as tasks. It does take some tinkering with since Asana isn’t built for Scrum. Hope this sparks something for you.

Hi Marquis, thanks for the video. I wish i could do what you just did with this project but i feel that you made big steps for more Asana and PM native person. Do you have or know how can i get to that Asana level but in a more step by step (when you don't understand quite well rules and templates)? Again, tks for the video

Hey, thanks for your comment, this is a great question. For me, it really came down to using and testing the tool in different scenarios. Between working on solutions for my customers, or teaching on different use cases to the KZbin community, I am always researching, learning, implementing and testing the ways that Asana works. A lot of my videos are created with that purpose-to educate.

Do you use SCRUM for all of your marketing processes? We launch an online certification course a few times a year, and I wondered if SCRUM, Kanban, or Waterfall would work best.
@MarquisMurray
@MarquisMurray Жыл бұрын
I don’t use Scrum for marketing, no. There isn’t enough content to call for that type of approach. Depending on how big your team is and how much content you’re producing, it may be beneficial.

Great video, definitely helped me to fill in some gaps with how I was setting up my sprint boards. One area I'm still trying to figure out: how do you leverage the templates / portfolios for reporting on sprint success? Specifically, tracking items completed that sprint vs items that have to push to the next sprint? Is there an easy way to leverage the data points collected through this set up to generate reports for communicating sprint results? In the past I've used a lot of manual data manipulation to get metrics, trying to streamline that portion of it.
@MarquisMurray
@MarquisMurray 7 ай бұрын
Portfolios would still need manual adjustment, but you could setup reporting charts to display sprint data over the last two weeks (or your desired timeframe) and choose to see the completion status of tasks during that timeframe. This would give you a rolling view of the tasks that were completed in that timeframe. You could also compare that to tasks that are overdue (not completed on the sprint) for that same timeframe. Hope that helps!

Great video Marquis! I’m new to your channel and you’ve won a new subscriber! ….. question: for the scenario in your video, what Asana pricing tier do you need? I see you set up automations and other stuff that I’m just not sure anyone in the lower prices tiers could try out. Also, is there a way to see the sprint board in columns? Like a kanban view?
@MarquisMurray
@MarquisMurray 4 ай бұрын
Hey Carlos, thank you for watching. Welcome to my channel! If you need automations you will have to at least get the Starter tier. Otherwise, you won't be able to access any automations. Also, to see the sprint board in columns, just select the "board" view in the views tab. Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Thank you for an interesting video. I've been trying to crack the Asana for Scrum code. I've been trying to work out how to make this all make sense. I'm really unhappy with the fact you need to create a field "story number" to have something tying the tasks together. I think that does not really work at scale and I'm really struggling with managing sprints with items from product backlog + maintenance items. I admire your approach to try and make Asana work for Scrum/Agile but in my opinion they are not really trying to make the solution work for software development teams.
@MarquisMurray

Hi, thanks for watching! I hear your concerns about the "story number" field. Have you tried Asana's new ID custom field? It might help. I'll cover it in an upcoming video. Stay tuned!

@@MarquisMurray This is a great idea. Is there a way to make a rule where the ID only gets applied to tasks that are under a "Story" category? Otherwise the backlog items will get the story ID too and defeats the purpose
