I’ve noticed over the past couple of days Quansheng have released a Baofeng UV5R clone, the Quansheng UVR5. It looks very similar to the UV-5R in looks and button placement with the nice big Quansheng screen with a blue backlight. From others who’ve bought it say it’s got a much better receive and a better internal speaker. I’ve been tempted to get one.
@acestudioscouk-Ace-G0ACE Жыл бұрын
@@OntheMicwithMike Thanks Mike, I'll have a look at this one. People say the speaker is poor in the K5. This may not be the case. It could be that the receive is so wideband and without sufficient filtering to eliminate the hiss. This then sounds like poor audio.

Your video helped in figuring out how to switch the VFO from AM to FM. Menu item 47 and N/W item 10. How to use the menu was a big help. Thanks
@kb5elv Жыл бұрын
One thing you didn't mention, and perhaps didn't know: All menus and the menu options can be directly accessed via the number pad. For instance, to activate a transmitted CTCSS tone of 88.5 hz, you could press menu, 7, menu, 08, menu, with 8 being the position of 88.5 in the list of tones. (Pretty sure, it's 8.) Anyway, access the frequency shift direction with menu, 8, menu, then 0 for simplex, 1 for plus, 2 for minus, then menu to confirm. To program the memory, menu, 13, menu, the channel number 031, menu twice. Could save a crap ton of scrolling. But all the menus are so arranged, so if you can remember where in the structure your most often used settings are, programming is even faster. Also great for blind ops for probably obvious reasons.

Thanks for the very clear explanation doubled down as that repeater is probably my closest. I've just bought this uv-k5 out of curiosity so everything you referenced is completely alien to me (step, wide narrow offset etc) I do want to replace the antenna to get some better gain? hey Mike. I just bought this radio as an ex Pilot I just want to listen to Aircraft....Can you please advise best antenna to achieve this? and any other info that works
@OntheMicwithMike Жыл бұрын
Hiya, for air band this radio isn’t the greatest. The antenna that comes with it unfortunately isn’t really tuned for the air band and most of these antennas made for the handhelds aren’t really made for anything other than 2m and 70cm. It will receive a little but a dedicated small portable air band radio would be much better in fairness.

Just a quick thought, within Chirp (if it is where you programmed it) there can be with some radios a TX enable and disable option within the sidebar when you have downloaded info from the radio. Have a look there, as the box for TX enable might be unticked. Worth a look at least. 73'

Quick question, can you manually change the channel to name it? Like ( repeater) example.

There’s no way of naming it in the radio menu at all. But if you want to change the display from frequency to an alphanumeric name, then you can within the menu. But like I said, you can’t actually name it, that’s done on programming software.

i have my gmrs license. i have this radio. i programed it for GMRS frequencies, but every time i transmit it says disable and dosnt transmit . any help ?
@OntheMicwithMike Жыл бұрын
That sounds like it’s frequency locked on that particular band. There’s a few videos online showing how to unlock it, that should unlock it for the band you’re wanting to use.
@kb5elv Жыл бұрын
Yep. It's probably locked to ham bands only. Try this. Turn it off, then with the PTT pressed with the top programmable side key, power on. You'll be dropped into the first of several hidden menus (number 52, if you're keeping track). Likely you'll see it's set to FCC. Press 0, then the Menu key, then cancel. This opens up 136-174 and 400-480 MHZ continuous transmit range. That should make it work on the GMRS channels.

How do you copy what you programmed to another radio❓(I have two)
@OntheMicwithMike10 ай бұрын
You can use the air copy feature but that’s very time consuming as I believe you can only send one frequency at a time. The best and quickest way, is with the programming software on a computer if you have the USB data cable. Then you can save the contents of one, to the computer and copy it straight over to another.

@OntheMicwithMike9 ай бұрын
No. This radio is a VHF/UHF radio with Airband. It doesn’t cover the UK CB frequencies unless you modify the firmware for it which is readily available online but you’d be better off buying a multi band shortwave receiver.
@happydays4259 ай бұрын
@@OntheMicwithMike Thanks for the reply. I've modded the radio it covers 18 to 1300 now but when I put the frequency for channel 19 or any other channel it doesn't pick up anything at all.
@OntheMicwithMike9 ай бұрын
@@happydays425 for CB and general HF, you'd need some height. Take it onto a hilltop or high ground, which should make a difference. But I wouldn't transmit on them, two reasons... first, the radio isn't designed for HF at all. It may receive okay, but transmitting on it will eventually do the radio some damage. Secondly and more importantly, you'll no doubt transmit harmonics as you'd be transmitting out of band that the radio was designed for. More than likely causing interference to the amateur radio bands. Other than that, enjoy the radio :)
