This whole thing takes me back to what i went through, how i quit my job and moved back to my country just to pursue music. I wasted a year until i realized how off balance i was. I gave up my source of income , i could sit and do music as a hobby but never be able to make them into full products because i had nothing to invest. So for me, finding the right balance between both seems to be working now. I think i would love to watch if you did a video on investment, i bet you can talk a lot from your experience and it can make a lot of people realize how important investment is when it comes to pursuing your dreams. That was a great video with a great advise, thanks man

Thanks Adam, first I’m just checking in to let you know that I often watch your videos. I even watch them all the way through! Imagine that! Second, this vid really resonates with me. I’m 61 years old. I worked in the in the entertainment industry for over 40 years. Within that industry I had a few different careers. Some years my income might have mostly come from only one of those careers. Other years my income was coming from all of my different professional endeavors. When I was in high school I made the career choice of being a songwriter/recording artist and performer. I didn’t have a clue about record deals, publishing, etc. I did know how to run a band and get paid. I also had balls of steel. The other thing I knew was that I would have to come up with any way possible of getting paid with my abilities. I played guitar, but I was a better drummer. However, I was an even better singer. I also had an extensive theatre background. My mom was a dancer in ballets, Broadway and movies. My dad was a second generation stagehand and his entire family were stagehands. So, I was dancing since I learned to walk and I was backstage on Broadway since my earliest memories. Basically I could sing, dance and act and I understood how that industry worked, both onstage and backstage. I was also totally obsessed with how records were made and the how and why my favorite were who they were. Ok, so I survived and even thrived. My life was an insane roller coaster ride took me so many places I’d never have imagined and I don’t mean I got rich. Hell to the no. I didn’t get a big record deal and become a star. But, I am so rich in experience that I wouldn’t change a thing. I got to do every single thing I dreamed of doing, just not the way I pictured it as a kid. The last 20+ years for me was largely surrounding audio engineering/recording. I was still writing, recording and performing a little, but not much. Ninety five percent of my energies were spent bringing other people’s art to fruition. I retired from NYC’s stagehands union last year with a modest pension and I’m working on my music in my home studio. The life change is fucking huge and I still feel like I’m tripping. A big adjustment is regarding why I now make my art. I spent a lifetime doing it largely to get paid and survive. Now I don’t give a fuck and it’s more challenging than ever because I can do whatever I want. The record industry provided hard boundaries regarding creativity and what was “singable.” A blank canvas with no rules can be very daunting. It can also be very exhilarating. I’m not young anymore and I was trained in an industry that isn’t interested in anything that isn’t young and great to look at. I’m doing some pretty cool work, but I’m a little self-conscious as to how to just be myself publicly regarding my music. I always had to care completely about self presentation. I want to follow through on delivering good music to anyone who will listen. It means presenting the real me, white hair, wrinkles and all. I’m ready to do it and I’m developing my roadmap, so I’m not an idiot doing idiotic things. Thanks for helping out. Your work has great value and I so appreciate your hard work, your passion and commitment. You always get me thinking. Peace & love -Tim

I started playing piano when I was 5 years old. I always had fun making things up on the piano, but they were never really anything more than riffs. When I was 11, I decided I might want to try and write some full pieces for piano. Of course, they weren't great. But at the time I was very proud of what I had done. One day, I figured I'd try and write something with multiple instruments other than piano. Once I did, I continued to do so. Gradually I began to love composing things more and more. Now I'm 16, and have wanted to be a film composer since I was 13. I'm taking all the steps I can to get myself out there. Thanks you for all of your videos Adam. They really give me knowledge regarding how to promote myself and my music.

Artists in the 60s and 70s were the biggest brands, Elvis and The Beatles perfected branding if you ask me
@martinheath59475 жыл бұрын
@@WillMaskellTaylor Yes I agree and Motown was the perfect brand machine, however the enormous talent was undeniably behind the branding. These days, branding becomes an end in itself -the famous for being famous paradigm, where any actual ability to sing, write or play becomes not just secondary but in many cases irrelevant. Hence the enormous dumbing down of music and particularly lyrics. Elvis and the Beatles were genuine artists controlled by svengali management. These days anyone cute with a media savvy image qualifies as an "artist" even if the music is garbage
@WillMaskellTaylor5 жыл бұрын
@@martinheath5947 I'd agree to extent, TBH though, I think you could easily compare Elvis to artists today as you described. He was an extremely handsome man who danced rather provocatively. Sure enough he could and was talented, but many chart topping artists have the same amount of talent such as Justin Beiber, who actually can sing and write. I do think that nowadays however, there are countless artists who are really not that's special or talented who are all about branding. I think this will die out soon because people don't buy music anymore, meaning that live gigs are the key to making it. If you can't entertain, if you're crap live it will show. So you do need talent to make it. The Britney Spears and autotune artists are dying out because of this.
@manocchs93695 жыл бұрын
Oh the old days... How things have changed.... THATS THE POINT. Things have changed. Its easier to break into the market today than it ever has been. What hasn't changed is that if you want to win you have to play the game. You just have to know the game you're playing.

It's not the end of the world if you don't brand yourself if you have another income. But it's important to ask yourself if that's what you want, and you have to accept the fact that you will be okay with it. Music in this age has the longevity of a social media comment, or a starbucks coffee. That's why the future of content is going in the direction of 'in the moment'. Maybe I'm being a hipster, but I'm tired of brands because the quality is always half-assed. I don't enjoy well branded music much and spend most of my time listening to obscure or even forgotten composers and musicians, but that's just me and those are my core values.

"That's not your brand." I swear I heard an angel choir immediately after hearing that revelation! THANK YOU, also, for acknowledging, admitting, pointing out how much Music Industry executives _don't_ care about MUSIC! It's not about the art and artists; it's about _consumers_ and _profit._ As for, "...putting myself out there," I watched your 1,000 followers in 90 days video, and it left me wondering, "How much interaction with potential fans should be focused on the _music_ itself, as opposed to the _brand_ in general?" Along that line, any specific recommendations for a band that gigs every weekend, has a small but dedicated local following, and an album _on the way,_ to promote brand familiarity "outside the family" in the lead-up to our first album's release? iPhone 6S right here! "Use what you have until what you have pays for what you want." BRILLIANT!!! I just bought a car...a used car, but still...100% with money earned through music performance. Am I livin' the dream? Maybe not, but progress is progress. Yeah? BTW, I also don't like the word, "Swag," BUT, "Swagger," is an entirely different animal. The former is more about materialistic flash; the latter is about carrying yourself with confidence. Yet another of _your_ videos to show my band! THANK YOU!!!

"brand" is the strip mall of words. it only makes sense as a concept if it's done sparsely, selectively. however, training everyone to become their brand is tantamount to thinking everyone can be rich if they work hard. just as the market would never stand everyone being rich, it cannot stand everyone being a brand. wait and see, anti-branding will be the next, logical phenomenon. people will become so sick of others fronting their brand. we will begin to feel played by everyone because of the ubiquitous and pervasive inauthenticity and dubious distance between someone's actual personality and the selective, curated behaviors of their brand. feels like we are devolving as a species....

This isn't going to stop, the music industry has been doing this since it has been around people like this shit and thats just how it is.

The industry... All industries, are consumer driven.
@lemonderangello5 жыл бұрын
@@PancakeDiaries music has potentially ubiquitous producers and less obvious consumers. so it would qualify just as much if not more as a producer-driven industry (than a consumer driven one), where the product is largely free or thought to be considered free. the more producers begin pimping their brands, the less useful and more consistently dubious branding becomes. it's a simple inflation effect.

the thing is, most people don't have the right ratio of drive, personality, and time vs responsibilities and income, to achieve this. these steps are for those with a good ratio. a good analogy would be stem jobs. it's simple... get a loan to go to school for a stem major. get a stem job. pay off your debts easily because your stem job pays a lot. but somehow we have a shortage of people in many stem fields. the bottom line, it takes a lot of work and dedication. It's enough of a deterrent that there wont be an overflow of stem qualified people. what he is saying in this video is that building your brand is what it takes. very few people are going to be willing to actually put the work in. because of this, people are never going to get tired of the facade. not enough people are willing to go the whole nine yards.

I think what really makes you known is producing good stuff. And no matter what you do. Just never stop. If you arent posting consistently, screw it. If you have fun at making music nothing will stop you. If success is worhtless to you because you just love to make people happy with your music, thats where you get started
