Thanks so much for your wonderful and useful tips. My way is a general "Let people talk about themselves and listen to them wholeheartedly!" In our era, people yearn for a listening ear. This has never failed me:) I listen carefully and ask other questions based on what they've just told me. (I start by commenting positively about things such as (learned it from you:) the lovely food at the wedding reception/How beautiful her jewelry is (she'll tell me how/when/where she got it) How wonderful it is to see her again, it's been awhile (she'll surely explain what has kept her busy). I'm constantly looking for a cue what she is keen to tell me about herself. We're both happy! She is happy to be talking about herself and I'm just happy she is doing most of the talking:) (in whichever language we use). I'm sure your excellent, well-presented strategies will make my small talk episodes more sensational and less perplexing!!

Because USA is a country of immigrants, I found that people like to talk about their cultural/ethnic background and specifically when their families came to establish themselves in this country. From that point, the subject is limitless and very interesting. So, my small talk question is something like “ How long have you lived in Florida?” and the response triggers all the other questions and answers.
@mie-68142 жыл бұрын
Annemarie, thank you for the lesson and the plethora of small talk questions. I want to share with you that I used your favorite small talk question twice yesterday. The first person was really into talking and it was awesome to listened the excitement in the her voice while sharing what she had done. However, I used the same question with another person, but this time she responded, well nothing really interesting just same old same old, I don’t do nothing exciting. I’m very simple, perhaps even boring. May I ask you. How would you have handled that situation? What would you have said next? Thank you
@Speakconfidentenglish2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mie, thanks for the comment and question. I'm glad to know this lesson helped you to have a successful conversation. With the second situation, it's difficult to know why someone might respond in that way. Perhaps they just didn't want to answer the question or maybe they're in a time of life when they don't have a lot of free time. In responding, you could offer a comment that allows for the conversation to shift to a new topic. For example, "Sometimes our lives are so busy that we need to have the free time for the same old, same old. That can be really comforting. Do you have a go-to movie, book, or blog you love to read?" This avoids any judgement and keeps the conversation moving along.
@mie-68142 жыл бұрын
@@Speakconfidentenglish Thank you, Annemarie for going through all that trouble to reply back. I felt for a moment that I was in a pickle. Thank you for the insightful example, I will write it down and practice it so that I will be more suited when I encountered with similar situation. 🤗💐 PS: I used your favorite question a couple of times while I was on vacation and it is an absolutely hit 🔥♥

You need to listen to your small talk partner attentively and be really interested in answers. It helps any person to open and make a first step to a possible friendship
@foxtrotbravo17445 жыл бұрын
"What's something interesting .... " is not necessarily a good way to start small talk because it puts the person on the spot to come up with something that they think you will find interesting too. It puts the ball in the other person's court and is too forward. It may be interpreted as "Hey, impress me if you can". That may be appropriate after a few short thoughts are shared and common vibe is established, but not to start. Just my opinion.
