Got to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU for sharing this rig info.. ive been confident in my rigs for years and catch good carp from all over the place, but there's one particular lake I fish that is a notoriously hard water and I have been blanking on there for a couple of seasons... I used the Hermit rig for the first time on there yesterday and had my first fish from the lake. A fully scaled mirror. it worked an absolute treat..10/10

I'm a great believer in keeping everything as simple a possible but I can see why this rig works....and it is not overly complicated, in fairness.

All a Hermit rig does is cushion against the movement of the lead. It actually reduces hooking potential by being a cushion to the hook point. Say it requires 3oz of pressure to pull the hook home. You have a 3oz lead . With a standard hook link the full weight of the lead is felt once the hook link has straightened. With a hermit/boa the weight of the lead gradually increases as the elastic stretches. So you don't get the 3oz of pressure on the hook point until the elastic stretches out and reaches 3oz of pressure. So it takes more travel and time for the hook to penetrate meaning more time for possible ejection. The fulcrum Steve is talking about is not correct. In fact his scenario reduces the lead weight. Think of a wheel barrow. The weight is the load on the barrow, the wheel is the fulcrum and the carp picking up the lead is you lifting the barrow, Steve's a good angler and would catch what he does without these poorly thought out rigs.

the point is the carp use the lead to dehook themself, the elastic stops this while keeping the hook in as they shake,

@CymruCelt01 no such thing as rig mechanics. If there was, you'd catch them every time they picked the bait up. Mechanics means repeatable every time. Rigs are not repeatable.
@jamesharrison5004
@jamesharrison5004 Жыл бұрын
@CymruCelt01 not as much as me with you living in denial and a total lack of understanding of what's going on. You need a super computer to predict movement of bodies in water. As no one has done this with rigs, you can't say what the mechanics are. Ergo there's no such thing as rig mechanics.

@CymruCelt01A hammer hammers and a screwdriver turns. Isn't that exactly the same operation every time you use either of these?

Fantastic rig but not safe. In the event of a crack off the lead cannot release. Only use with pole elastic that breaks easily. Always check the safety of the rig.

Not true at all mate, it’s a running rig, so the lead is never teathered to the hook link, tench, bream all snap the elastic and run from the lead. Perfectly safe.

Marker elastic from Fox, Korda will not snap. Needs to be a low breaking strain pole elastic. Test it.

Fair point made there I think I would only use pole elastic but to be fair I think mr Reynard is well experienced with fish care and wouldn’t use it if it was unsafe

The fact is it is not safe. Steve has overlooked this. I'm sure not intentionally but a lead set up must be tested for safety if the mainline snaps.

@rich4738 the elastic stays on the ring? Did you not hear him say that the people he teaches try to tie it back up when they caught, but he said to just start again 🤔

@@andywhalley3669 Clearly the elastic stays on the ring, I'm aware of that. Still not tying bits of elastic to my rigs, just another gimmick IMO.
