Learning to taste is also really awesome. I know they kind of go together but they are a bit different. I used to be a coffee taster on different coffee from around the world. We would taste or known as cupping in the coffee industry everyday after roasting the coffee the previous day. Basically the more you practice the better you get at deciphering the smells and tastes. Not to mention its kind of classy to be able to give tasting notes on different drinks. Dang I miss that job haha

yeah we drank upwards of 6-7 actual cups of coffee through out the day. That's including the cupping portion of the day. My coworker and director of coffee nearly always had a cup in their hand haha. And I decided to leave to go back to school full time. I was only making 4$ more than minimum wage in California. It was probably the most enjoyable job I'll ever have. It's worth it for me to go back to school though.

I love the fact that smells can bring up so many specific memories. It sounds weird but I loved the smell of my ex-boyfriend's breath. I can distinguish all of my grandparents just because of their smell! A specific perfume of mine reminds me of an specific stage in my life (when I would wear it often). I love how each person has their own unique smell. It may sound nasty to many but I actually like a lil bit of a sweat smell on men. (Am I sharing too much here? Just throwing facts)

Ever since I was a kid smell really had a strong place in my senses, I have kind of a list of smells that I associate with people I've been close to in my life. I work with different types of explosives and I totally get why sniffer dogs are good at what they do, each one has a really unique odour before and after detonation. Before my current job I use to work in the emerge department and some diseases you could smell from a mile away, diabetes is the perfect example because if it's poorly managed they kind of smell like nail polish remover. You can smell when a person has a fever almost to the level that if your use to the smell you can kind of gather a hunch as to if they are fighting off a virus or a bacterial infection. You can smell a person sweating out drugs, both illegal and prescribed and when people die, or just before they die you can smell death, the expression "the sweet smell of death" is totally true imagine a steak with a very light spritz of perfume and that's the right idea
@petersimon72662 ай бұрын
Last week my friend had a fever, and somehow I noticed a change of smell in his room. My theory is that when body's immune system is fighting bacteria or viruses, the dead components(microbes and blood cells) get excreted through sweat, giving it a heavy smell. Now I think I can recognize a person having a fever with just smell.

I like to think that I have a higher than average sense of smell to compensate for my hearing. I can smell chunky peanut butter from smooth peanut butter, rice and it's relative age, and much more. I once smelled a friend who I've met only a couple of times from across an auditorium at a jazz concert, even when there was a bowl of chinese food in front of me. And if I'm smelling right, you're bored.

Good video but I would suggest adding continual qualification into the mix, I.e. Smells like read fruit, cherry, fresh cherry, fresh black cherry and so on. I've had people get very frustrated when they here experts speak very specifically and they don't realize there's a process to it. Also I have to disagree about sharp sniffing. I've always gotten more types of scents and better descriptors when taking deep, controlled even breaths. I would compare sharp sniffing to going into a museum and walking as quickly as possible up to a painting. Also should keep in perspective molecular size. When smelling wine, I'm not trying to smell big fat ethanol chains, I want to smell tiny little polyphenol rings first. I'd suggest also what I call environmental smelling, where you start off just breathing in and try and hone into a certain smell. Can be done blind or known, but it helps explore intensity as well as experiencing it in combination with other smells, since rarely do we ever smell just one thing at a time. It's also a great way to explore directionality with smell and play with how we use scent in mapping our environment.

*video summary:* pay attention to your environment because there is always some scent of something around and sniff actively. well, i would have expected a bit more in-depth and tricks or certain ways to actively increase your sense of smell. for example, as a cigar smoker you do not - since we don't inhale - blow out the smoke through your nose. however, there's a technique that allows you to do blow the smoke that is "sitting" in your mouth through the nose, which is called a retro hale. there's lots of stuff to it.

I can smell a persons scent and tell if they sleep with many partners. I can also tell if it is a male and or female that they are sleeping with or cheating on their partners. I can smell other odors and pick up on what is different in my home. I can touch a penny and mentally taste it. I can imagine a rose in my mind and smell it. One of my other sisters has the same ability. My sister would tell me about a co-worker that was sleeping with different men during her lunch hour because her scent would change and just so you know many partners makes your scent rancid. The more the worse the smell is. During covid I offered a friend to stay in a separate place I had upstairs with a private entrance. His scent was so rancid but I was confused so I had to confront him and ask if he was sleeping around or in a relationship. He said I am sleeping with both men and women. I asked him to leave the following day because this is not a time to be doing this when we have an epidemic. My sister had to help me clean the place and remove that scent and I have to tell you it took me a month of cleaning everyday and burning incense to get the smell out.

Then I would definitely recommend trying it. If you can sense different flavors in food still, your olfactory bulb probably wasn't effected much and the problem lies in the tissue of your nose or sinuses. And in time, it could return back to normal, like a smoker who can't smell his own smokiness, but has no problem smelling it after he quits. I left another comment on here that talks about some of the techniques I use when I have to do wine education programs. Go check that out, especially the continual qualification.
