I like the A to B idea for level comp. This can be hard to get across to people. I also was experimenting on studio rack and found some really interesting ideas with the multiband rack, using the J37 with wow and flutter only on the high mid. This was on an already mixed song but worth a try for adding life to a dead vocal in an already mixed song.
@fattmusiek5452
@fattmusiek5452 9 ай бұрын
Question- how do you apply wow and flutter to only the mids? I love J37, but am surely not getting the most out of it- There are the HPF and LPF knobs on the bottom right of the plugin…When I’ve adjusted these, it seems to have little discernible difference on the master buss, for example. Wondering why that is. Thank you!
@brianbauer3148
@brianbauer3148 9 ай бұрын
@@fattmusiek5452 with studio rack you can do parallel signal chains for different frequency bands. In the instance I used it I inserted the J37 on the high mid band and tried it the Wow because the track seemed over compressed and dead sounding. It brought back some life with out adding artifacts to the lower frequencies. Haven't used it much but I was surprised at its usefulness for that.

Bizarely, this helps make sense why I have been pulling the output to -3db when using modern on my master channel in my DAW. In the manual, they said they had designed "Modern" specifically for more modern mastering usage. I think the original would sound great or more analogue style music, the modern definitely sounded more clean which personally I liked on this electronic vibed music, but all preference.Thanks, great tutorial

Ian: It would very interesting to hear your thoughts on the sidechain in the Limiter section (which is only seen if the module is expanded). As there are 3 different frequency areas that can affect the sidechain, it would undoubtedly help views to hear whether you favor engaging one or more of them, and if not, why. Thanks.

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me. In the Tape Emulator plugin, there is the link button and Ian takes down the input by 4dB and it increases the output by 4dB, can anyone let me know what the reasoning is for this? Thanks!
@ralfransom3707
@ralfransom3707 4 жыл бұрын
The tape machine causes a type of smooth compression to the peaks and since he's taking care of a lot that with the TGMC, the 4db reduction is probably to reduce the amount of compression and color/saturation driving into the j37.
@MixingGBP
@MixingGBP 4 жыл бұрын
You lower input in order to get the needle to max out a zero. You can then link the in control to the out control to maintain the loudness of the plugin so that you don't think your sound is better simply because it's louder.

My question is I want to get my song louder I want my wlm meter to read; -short term -7lufs -long term -7lufs -range 1 -momentary -5.5lufs -truepeak -1.5 and true peak limiter to read -1.5. (Those are the levels of Dojacat say so which is currently charting pretty high, it has a fantastic master sound and I want to achieve a sound something like that) any advice on what I need to do? Thanks for the video -- very informative as always. I note, though, that Makeup Gain was raised about 1.5dB, even though earlier said you try not to use it -- what are we looking out for there? Also, with recommendations of mastering to (approx.) -14dB for many streaming services, is your recommendation of 11db on the VU meter equal to -11dB for output (and wouldn't that then be louder than streaming recommendations)? Thanks for clarifying these issues.

Hi Fabio, thank you for reaching out. The Live component is optimized for live use, where extremely low-latency and minimal CPU usage are required. As opposed to the non-live component, the Live component does not use up-sampling and uses IIR sidechain filters whilst the non-live component uses FIR sidechain filters.
