This is for a 5.9 cummins isb, but this procedure works for any engine. Just make sure you look up the proper specs for your specific engine.

Melissa you should take care to not crank down on the indicator. If force is excessive you can cause the indicator body to distort and the rod will bind and possibly give a false reading.

Damnit i wish i had a mechanic like you i coukd trust with my RB25DET... ive already done headstuds , OEM headgasket and cylinder head oil drain kit. Im a bit nervous bc even tho i did stuff pretty carefully... not much next to one dial gauge was needed an i lifted the head removing the timing belt etc without cracking the harmonic balancer crank bolt. I have to say you are awesomely confident in your work. I learned 2 new things today companion cylinders and how to read the protrusion. Looking at getting a 4g63 next. Maybe rebuild my barra 245T. Can only hope I regain my confidence working on my own cars again as it's been more a ritual of abusing myself again and again after braking something... again 😂😂

Used to be a machinist for a oil company and sometimes we had to work within a half of a thousandth tolerance. It was tough. 6 to 19 seems reasonable. Easier movement. Great video as always........

If your running close to the upper limit I recommend measuring at top and bottom cause the piston will rock in the bore and tilt in the bore a little. Don’t want those cheeks clapping at a higher rpm

Any chance you're in California? Or, could you recommend a shop for a full rebuild? 2nd question: My cab came off. Its possible to pull it out the front?

Whatever turns the crank without damaging it and gets the job done is the proper tool yes there is a barring tool but where there's a will there's a way what did mechanics do before there was a such thing as a industry standard anything they just did what they had to do to get it done so whatever gets the job done I have been watching along to see the progress on your new truck that you're building anxious to see the finished product going to be cool

Except 2 stroke Detroits. If memory serves me, Detroits are piston recession ie" below the deck. Also a recent discovery of mine. Oven cleaner dissolves carbon like magic. My brother and I even noticed pistons wouldn't move side to side,but after letting oven cleaner seep past the carboned up rings that were apparently" seized " with carbon. We then got pistons to where we could fill with kerosene overnight to flush the gunk to oil pan,then flushed out pan.

That is how you have to set the injector pump lifter on caterpillar machines from the fourties to the seventies

See it is like this you have marks on the fly wheel stamped one and six, running mates , two and four are mates, three and five are mates so when you are setting the lifter in the pump to the correct measurement, you bar the engine over till you get to say one and six now also depends on witch is top compression so if you are bar the engine over for top compression of # one as the mark on fly wheel comes in view, you must stop right on the point if you go past you either had to back up 90 degrees or roll the engine around twice to get back I is in partitive you stop right on point mostly cause of the back lash in the gears and piston being right at it spot, cause if you pass point by an 1/8 th inch roll back to now you be lost in the gears and on the connecting rob ist being ien do for stonien

Not trying to nit-pick, but to find true TDC you should make a mark on the balancer (or use degree wheel) a certain distance BTDC and then the same distance ATDC. The center of those two marks in true TDC. I don't believe the distance you stop before or after really matters, but I usually go 0.050". An ole boy showed me this. That being said, just for checking piston protrution, the way you did it is fine really, but just not at exact TDC because of the piston dwell. Depending on stroke, rod length, and probably some other stuff, the amount of crank rotation while the piston is as high as it ever gets varies. Like I said jus trying to pass on something someone taught me.

I've heard and measured liner protrusion. But never measured piston protrusion. That's all controlled by the crank, rods, and deck height. For the past half century of building engines.

Actually the human eye has been proven to see in a resolution down to about .004” . I’m a machinist and engine builder and regularly can distinguish down to about 5-10 thou and while I don’t rely on vision I use proper measuring tools, I will sometimes guess at something using both eyes and touch and then measure to see how close I was and this is how I got the above that I’m good to about .005-.010”. If I were to get an eye a🙃exam and glasses I could prolly improve by a few. I find myself squinting sometimes the older I get. Speaking of eyes, yours look great in this video. Personally like them better here than with the cat eye or wings or whatever they are called. 👍🏻

Great video but... 1 thing made me cringe. When you said to crank down the gauge in the fixture I was 😳. I don't care what brand you are using if you are ham fisted when you "crank down" you "WILL", (not "MAY"), tweak the gauge and cause it to stick in it's travel... 😢 You might not even notice until you you see a slight "jump" in the gauge movement as it rides up and down. I know Melissa is a lot more careful with her tools than that but for the brutes in the audience.... 🙄
