The “memory palace” is a famous technique that makes incredible feats of memory possible (the world record for “number of digits of Pi memorized” is a whopping 70,000). And yet, most of us struggle to remember a new phone number. We perform some simple tests on ourselves to make better use of our frustratingly limited recall.

How many numbers you can keep in working memory also depends on the number of syllables, not just the number of items. That's why people remember more or less numbers when their working memory is tested in different languages (Arabic < Spanish < English). This even applies to sign language, where a list of words that take longer to sign are more difficult to remember than a bunch of short signs.

For the memory palace as they put it (when I was studying how to increase the capacity for learning) it is better when you pick places in your physical room to assign the "cards or objects" there clock-wise or counter clockwise as opposed to random locations in your room. It does work.. I was studying engineering and had to remember formulas for this class and I created a story in my bedroom and the formulas were in different parts of my bedroom..

Some programmers have a memory palace for one programming language. They entertain a number of memory palaces. The memory palace is the way story tellers used in the past and in India still use to quote the Vedah or Homer from memory at the community fire. The memory palace is a most remarkable tool that has been known and has been in use for at least 3,000 years now. But there are other methods, too. Ask Quintilian, Book XI, Chapter 2, sections (Latin lines) 18 - 35.

I have 60 odd digits of pi memorized and the way I've done it is pretty unique. I used to only know 3.14159, but I slowly added more digits, 2 to 5 at a time, and through the course of four years, I now know so many digits that writing them on a screen surprises me everytime, because it's so much. I distinctly recite it 2 to 5 digits at a time, in the same groups always. 3.14159 26 535 8 979 323 8462 64 3383 27 9502 88419 7169 3993 75 105 8 2097 494 459 I often keep track of unsure digits, such as a 2. It is an unsure digit because I think it comes next after everything but I have to check to be sure.

It's funny to me that different people group most of them differently but there are specific parts where almost all group them the same. Here's my grouping: 3, 14 15 926 535 8979 3238 4626 4338 3279 50 2884 1971 69 3993 75 105 820 974 944 5923 0781 640 62 862 0 899 862 80 34 825 34 211 70 6798 214 80 8651 32823 0 664 7093 8446 09550 5 82231 725 35 940 8128 Which is hard to write since I've started making bigger groups containing previously smaller groups. This makes sudden appearances of single/double digits where in reality although they are a small group, they are also part of bigger 9-15 digits group. I wonder if real record breakers also make groups of groups, and if so, how many times do they group smaller groups into the bigger ones

Memory paths / palaces work remarkably well... As long as you don't reuse the mental connections too often for new memory sets. My memory failed again when all the things or connections at certain spots on an imagined path blended together again, because I mixed up my memory sets. I think you have to use a different location or path for every new set you want to memorize. And there it starts to become limited.

The capacity of memory was dramatically manifested by the man that the movie "Rainman" with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman was based upon. He actually would read a book two pages at a time, speed reading, with one eye reading each page simultaneously and he remembered EVERYTHING he read. To be fair, he had a form of Autism Spectrum that gave him the ability to do amazing things. He lived near me and he had to live with his parents or a caretaker until he died. Of course, he had limits, but it was like a man able to suddenly move mountains with his bare hands. Yet, he couldn't take care of himself. I remember buying a memory system many years ago (YOU SEE?! IT WORKS!) that used a similar progressive association of odd memorable objects or images interacting or being placed in a succession of rooms or locations in a room. I can tell you that I can remember hundreds of people from nearly 40 years ago because they occupied a series of rooms in health facilities that no longer exist but in my memory. They were not related to me but I worked with them over years of time. This was when I was 18. As I got older it became more difficult to recall the more recent ones. Still I can recall clearly the ones from about 40 years ago. I have had Attention Deficit; Inattentive Type without Hyperactivity and I can tell you the stimulants do NOT improve my memory. I find I can spend A LOT of time and Attention on what I am interested in (AD/HD kids can play video games in their parent's basement for DAYS IN A ROW) so paying Attention has to do with INTENTION. Like "Rainman" we may recall things but forget to put our pants on unless we have a Routine with Sub Routines or Habitual Behavior. Still, there is a terrible lesson to learn: A woman left her infant daughter in the backseat of her car with windows rolled up in a parking lot on AUGUST 23 for over 9 hours. TRUE STORY. You imagine she "forgot" her. No. In fact, in Court the Judge ruled she was NOT AT FAULT even though her daughter died in that car. She is a Scientist for a large Corporation having a routine of dropping her daughter at the Day Care on the way to work. That morning she was NOT distracted or hurried. In fact, she was early for work. Nothing unusual happened. After 9 1/2 hours the Day Care called her at work asking why she did not bring in her daughter. She panicked wondering if someone kidnapped her daughter. Being upset, her mind had the worst thought imaginable and she ran out into the parking lot at top speed straight for her car to find her daughter still strapped into her car seat in the back. She called 9-11 hysterically telling them what happened, that she left her daughter in the car, but nothing could be done. She replayed that morning over and over. All she could think of was something different where at the Day Care she looked at children's paintings. She may have thought that she dropped her off then when in fact she didn't. The anguish was intense. Finally, she had to DO SOMETHING so she formed the Bag In The Back program to have parents place something in back they CANNOT leave the car without: A Bag, a purse, a wallet, a shoe, keys, ANYTHING you CANNOT get out of the car and leave without. The BAG IN THE BACK program.

I tend to remember numbers by their colors, but sometimes that doesn't work because both 4 and 7 are yellow, also all months and years and other concepts have their own colors and shapes that i remember... all letters also have colors but a, u and y are all yellowish y is lighter yellow and u is almost lion brown, but in a word all letters effects the color and feeling of the whole word buy mostly the vowels, which is why i confuse saturday and sunday because they both contain the letter ö... in swedish, lördag, söndag, also tuesday and friday are both "light" whitish days because of the e and i in "tisdag" and "fredag", while monday, wednesday and thursday are the darker days. I would never confuse a thursday and a tuesday ever, but a tuesday and a friday possibly, because to me they're both white or at least light colored. Of course some days are very bright like Tuesday, January 11, which is the whitest day of the year, I have never tried memorizing pi but i always remember the first few digits from the first day i learned pi in school, by their colors and i tend to not forget facts that i've learned by people speaking to me, but if i read them in text i'm much more likely to forget... also I can recall most conversations i've had since i was about 5 years old, and several from earlier that too... but then i'm not very social so i guess i have fewer conversations to remember

I find the memory palace just doubles my memory load. Picturing something works really well for me, but only if it's that very same word I'm trying to remember, whether it's a picture of the object, or the letters that spell the word. If I assign a symbol to it, I just have to remember the random symbol, and then I have to remember what the symbol stands for.

what also is important is that people memorize things totally differently. For example I have big problems memorizing a 5 digit number after hearing it but I memorized 45 digits of pi after reading it once... I forget a lot of things after hearing them but I memorize a lot after seeing it, especially numbers. The "memory palace" also don't work for me very well. I have no idea how people can work with this. It's almost impossible for me.

It's called the Method of Loci, not the "memory palace." Also, we understand quite a bit of the neuroscience behind this. The majority of spatial memory (which is what is taken advantage of in this method), is formed and maintained in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, CA1 region of the hippocampus, and the dentate gyrus. From an MRI or fMRI there are not many structural differences between a normal person and a "memory athlete" because the changes are predominantly found within and near the synapse. It's mostly a function of a phenomenon termed "Long-term potentiation" or LTP. In LTP, specific receptors of the neurotransmitter glutamate called AMPA (or α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptors), congregate near the synaptic cleft and various structural changes take place. If you were to look at this under a microscope, you would see the dendritic spines of the affected neurons become shorter and mushroom-shaped, which accounts for stronger and more precise signal transduction. In the animal model of memory this is commonly observed through immunohistochemical methods and is the result of memory training. Stronger memory = more LTP in precise regions of the brain (in a nutshell).

The explaination of the method omitted one important detail. Assigned objects need to be connected in the space. It allows your brain to form connection between these random objects and that enables "the flow" during recollection. Otherwise you might struggle to remember all of them.

Long-Term-Memory is something interesting, Memory-Athlets can remember the arrangement of cards in a deck, remember names together with faces and many more things. But how do they do it? * Vsause music starts playing * And can you do it, yourself?
@funnyvideosfans
@funnyvideosfans 6 жыл бұрын
Tbh, whts the use of training to become "memory athletes"? I don't think it has any practical use in daily life. Boosting your working memory on the other hand, can be much more useful. Besides, you'll probably be spending more time creating these associations between the objects to be memorized and some other objects than actually trying to memorize it...
@zeugens

some memory athletes compete to learn the names of a bunch of random strangers all at once. they can get pretty good at this, to the point where they only need to look at a face for a couple seconds to remember each person's name

penile 1 I clearly did not say that. I said that training your memory to the level of said "memory athletes" is neither practical nor immensely beneficial. Give me instances when you'd actually need to memorize things to such extent unless you're working in medicine or preparing for some exam. Most modern exams also don't even test a candidate purely based on what they have memorized but also tests their logic and deductive reasoning among many others and these skills require a large working memory (as you'd need to keep several things in mind at the same time to make connections between them within the alloted timeframe). Instead of trying to become some sort of biological encyclopedia, your time would be much better spent on practicing these other skills instead of honing your long term memory. It would be great if these techniques would allow you to quickly toss everything you see into long term memory and make them stay there; however, they clearly don't (at least not significantly). The human brain is just wired to forget things that we deem unimportant. So unless you truly have the conscious desire to remember that particular thing you have memorized, it will eventually fade one way or another. Working memory in the other hand, helps you get things done at the present. It allows you to run many more complex processes at the same time. It's like your computer's RAM. Would you rather have a computer with 10 TB of HDD storage and 4 GB of RAM or one with 512 GB or HDD storage and 32 GB of RAM? If you wish to live as a backup computer that stores family photos from 15 years ago then the first one would work just fine. Otherwise, the second one beats the first one every single time. You would be able to run multiple heavier programs at the same time and still have a smooth user experience. Even though it has less long term memory, it's not like we would need to store an excel spreadsheet from 15 years ago do we? Well, at least that's my opinion. Which computer would you rather be?
@funnyvideosfans
@funnyvideosfans 6 жыл бұрын
penile 1 Yes I did. And for me, actually trying to understand the concept is much more helpful than trying to make vague and detached imageries of the thing you are trying to memorize. It does not only help me with memorizing the subject but also helps me with developing on those ideas more easily. I guess it's a subjective matter but regardless of how you perceive the arguments I have presented above, it still remains true that most people would prefer to become the second computer. To each his own.
@funnyvideosfans
@funnyvideosfans 6 жыл бұрын
penile 1 Then tell me, how long would it take to get the "right image"? Why would that be of any help to me when I can get straight As (A*s actually because A levels) with my current technique which does not involve any conscious, forceful effort to perform? Why would I waste any more time trying to invent the proper mnemonic for every single thing I learn? It could be that I simply have an atrocious imagination but well, that makes your point just as subjective as how you perceived mine. :)

to solve a rubik's cube blindfolded, the technique that most speedcubers use is exactly this. we assign each sticker a letter in it's solved state, and when scrambled, use those letters to create a story to describe how the cube is configured. then, when the blindfold is put on, we execute that story.
