I'm 72 and recently had a stroke. I'm recovering well. Picked up both of Nelson's books, "Remember It!", and "Memory Superpowers". They are a very good read. I've so far memorized all the Presidents, and the Periodic Tablet of the Elements, and a sundry of other equally important things. I've had some back and forth email with Nelson when I was a bit confused concerning memorizing a deck of cards, and he gracefully gave me an audience with him. Nice guy. Buy his books. You won't be disappointed.

I'm working on my PAO list for cards and numbers now. I find the linking method to work great for memorizing longer list so far. Memory palace works too but linking is a crazy story. Memory palace is good for 25-50 things. So far for me.

I'm doing blocks of 5: Person-Action-Adjective-Object-Place based mostly on the major system, and one of my memory palaces is a familiar golf course with 5 positions per hole. For instance, in the last deck I did one of the 5-blocks was Koala Cough Signed Hose Hef, so my image was a Koala projectile vomiting on a signed hose in the playboy mansion all taking place on the number 2 tee. This image tells me that cards 31 through 36 are 5 of clubs (Koala), 8 of clubs (cough), 2 of spades (signed), 10 of hearts (hose), 8 of hearts (hef). The 5 blocks make it easy to recall a card's position. After I've memorized a deck (which still takes too long), someone can call out a random card and in less than a second, I can tell them exactly where it is.

Another tip I have is to know your memory palace well. You have to jump to the next location without even thinking so you can focus on the cards.

I'm not sure if you've done this, but I wanna see you blindsolve a Rubik's Cube. I personally find the blind/memory solve of a cube is actually easier than the beginner's method. I'd find it funny to see somebody say "I have to solve it blindfolded, I don't know any other way."

Hello Nelson, i have an assessment for an airline and therefor I have to do a memory n-back test. It is from 2 to 5 back. You see a symbol in 1 out of 3 different colors und you have to memorize it. Also you have to decide whether it is the same symbol and color as the symbol that was 2, 3, 4 or 5 ago. I think you know what I am talking about und sure you know these kind if tests. Yes typically. Although If I need it to be longer sometimes a memory palace can connect multiple places. For cards though, one “place” is good enough usually.

Hey Nelson, so I had a question about PAO. I've heard about it before, but I never implemented it because I sort of heard of 2 different ways. The way you do it is such that the Action and Object are related to the Person (e.g. James Bond, shooting, gun). I've heard of another way of doing it where you have each set just based off of that mnemonic (e.g. James bond, juggling, jackhammers). Which one is better, and why? I'd like to start memorizing things, but I haven't quite settled on a system (and I need to solidify my memory palace).

I've heard of that way too but to me it doesn't make sense. Yes, they share the same starting letter as the person, but it's something so unrelated you still have to "memorize" it. I prefer choosing an action and object that instantly springs to mind for that person so that there is no wasted time having to memorize it and nail it down. I don't want to be sitting there thinking oh was he juggling, jackhammering, jamming, joking, etc.

Mine is a mix. I started with Harry Lorayne's 1-peg-per card system, but now am expanding it into a five-cluster system (person-action-adjective-object(may be a repeat of the person)-place.) I've been using the major system so long that the number-to-card association is automatic for me if I follow the numbering scheme. But if the person has a very strong image, then I'll stick to that.Fewer pegs to memorize, and less chance of mistakes. One thing I'm also doing is redefining words and making up my own fictional meanings. In the original system, Queen of Diamonds is "dream" , so for me the person is Freddy Krueger. In the fictional universe of my deck the action "to dream" means to slash with a razor glove. The adjective "dreamy" means in the process of morphing into Freddy (like the convertable at the end of the first movie). The object for dream is also Freddy (I'll know which is which because he's not performing an action and is modified by an adjective. The place known as the "dream" is the boiler room. For all of these, I still think the word "dream". By redefining "dream" everything is linked together with only one peg to memorize. I do the same for 6 of clubs (cash) The person is Johnny Cash. The action "to cash" means to steal from an assembly line to piece the object together. The adjective "cashed" or "cashy" means pieced together from mismatched parts, but the object cash is just money and the place is either a pile of money or a cash-couch (a couch made of money). For others where the person's image isn't as strong I follow the numbering. 8 of diamonds DEVO(the band) DIVES onto a DIVING DOVE on a DIVING BOARD. For Queen of spades I abandoned the original "steam" and went with SQ words. SQUID SQUISHES SQUEAKY SQUASH inside a SQUASH (for that the entire diorama takes place inside of a giant hollowed out pumpkin.) Most of mine are a mix. Playing around with this I'm finding out which ones are easy to remember and which ones confuse me.

That's pretty strange. Maybe your first two locations aren't the best for storing images. If not, you might have to review them or spend a little more time on placing them in your memory palace.

I have recently accomplished memorizing a deck of cards, thanks to your videos. I do have a couple of questions, however. Although I can memorize a deck, I am having complications with speed. I believe it is due to the fact that while assigning them I didn't organize, for example, diamonds to rich, clubs to sports, etc. It is difficult to understand right away *example* 4 of spades from 5 of spades because they are practically identically assigned. (4 of spades refers to Frank Sinatra because F. S. but 5 of spades is also F. S.) My question is: To help with speed and fluidity, should I go back and reassign some of the cards? Or should I do my best to familiarize myself with the cards?

My opinion would be it probably doesn't matter, but you should pick sooner rather than later because you don't want to see the 4 of spades and think 'is this frank sinatra (old card) or is it dr Seuss (new card)? Either way, eventually you want to see a card and associate it with the person directly, rather than translating the card to initials and then to a person.
