As a kid in the '60s my dad went to Dale Carnegie... they taught a system for remembering the first 13 colonies, in order of joining the union... I remember something about George Washington with his finger up in the air... there was a cut on the finger (Connecticut), there was a giant bloc of ice (Mass), Mary Martin was skating on it (Maryland)... somewhere there was the Titanic? No, ocean liners, with one pointing North and one pointing South (N and S Carolina). It's been 55 years, I still remember pieces of it from when I was eight.

I have images associated with the 50 US states, but I've repeated them so many times that remembering the images is much slower than just repeating the pattern I've gone over so many times. I think I learned them when I was very young, in elementary school, and even if I lost the ability to instantly recall the states, I'll still be able to come up with all of them. It was called a "peg system" and was very similar to this system and basically uses the same number and letter combinations. I'm excited about building some new memory palaces - but first I want to learn those colonies 😆

Just starting to get back into memory training since I have so much free time this year. I started years ago with Harry Lorayne's book, 'Super Memory Super Student. Even after years of not using the link system, I STILL remembered most of the words for the numbers! It really does work well! I've easily memorized Pi up to a hundred digits. The peg and the graph system is even more fun since you can use them to memorize so many different things like maps, graphs, the periodic table of elements, etc... Just now (as of today after watching your video) I am starting with cards. So excited to do this!

I'm so happy you made this video. My hobby is solving rubiks cubes blindfolded and I'm definetly gonna try the pao system. Right now I have a system where each sticker has its own letter, and I cycle through the letter pairs and for each pair I imagine a distinctive word...it gets hard sometimes because I don't have the exact word for each letter pair that could appear. Can't wait to apply this to blindsolving! Cheers.

I took this further by making a PAAO system with the second A an adjective for each card. That way I can memorise 4 cards for each scene. I have also numbered each card as Ace - King spades = 1-13, then hearts, clubs and finally kind of diamonds is 52. Then I just use the numbers from my version of the Major system to come up with the PAAOs. For example, 10 of hearts translates as 23 so I use a P, A, A and O with B and C separated by vowels. That way I can use the system to memorise numbers as well, like pi. And now I hold the UK record for reciting the most digits of pi while juggling, which I’d love you to feature on your channel, Chris.
@Sojaman21
@Sojaman21 4 ай бұрын
Hello, what do you mean by B and C ? And separated by vowels ?
@MrZachpowell
@MrZachpowell 4 ай бұрын
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I code numbers as letters in the following way: 1R, 2B, 3C, 4D, 5P, 6F, 7G, 8H, 9N, and 0S. So 23 to me is BC which is Bill Clinton (person) broadcasting (action) from a baltic (adjective) bicycle (object). The 8 of diamonds doubles as number 47 in my system so that would be DG: David Guetta digging for digital drugs. I have a PAAO for every two digit number. And I use 01 to 52 for cards. You'll notice I don't use vowels for any of the numbers because I use them between the consonants to make the words because vowels are so common so it would be very difficult to use them as the key letters. I published a book called Slice of Pi which explains by whole system and shows you my memory palaces, etc. It's on Amazon if you'd like a copy.

This is so cool. I’m on my 3rd Day and in 21 minutes I have got 49/52. I know I can do this, I have changed my PAO quite a few times (even categories) and now that it has solidified things should get easier. I have downloaded an app that lets you practice as well, all suits, one suit etc. I didn’t use it for this but it can also help you build your list which is the most important part. Find things that roll off your routine. Picasso Painting a Picture etc. Something I thought seemed impossible is in reach.

Thank you for this. I'd tried before with just people (no actions or objects) and it was harder. Also, I tried to relate the numbers to letters, A-A 2=B, 3=C etc. It's hard to think of names beginning with I, J and even F that fir the categories and I never did nail tags for all the cards. I think these tips may well help me complete, although my 52 room mind palace was the one thing I did nail. Only need 17 or 18 now so will try a different one.
