These days NSS data comes with Nesstar sofware that converts data in Stata and various other formats and weights, HHID, PID, etc is already given in the converted file. I think the process is same as from level 3 the individual data set begins so you will have to use 1:m for merging the data for this level. So, the process should be the same, however, let me know if you face any difficulty.

Thanks, this was very useful. I observe that since variables are named from a to f, there are some repetitive variables in master file which makes the file heavier. For example common id is repeating in all levels. how can we select variables that can be deleted.

Each data set is unique in itself therefore, there is no hard and fast rule. Rather, read and understand the schedule and experiment with the data and only then any NSS dataset will be workable.

I have successfully merged levels 1,2 & 3 but after that when I am trying to merge level 4 data it is showing an error (variable PID does not uniquely identify observations in the master data r (459)). In the merge file of levels 1,2&3, the PID variables of the level are coming blank. Please help me out to sort out this problem. There are cases where the no of observations will remain unmatched because the data collection is such. Therefore, it is important to understand each level.
