These days NSS data comes with Nesstar sofware that converts data in Stata and various other formats and weights, HHID, PID, etc is already given in the converted file. I was working with 75th Social Consumption Education, and followed the steps as you have told in the group. But while trying to merge error 459 appears saying "variable HHID does not uniquely identify observations in the master data". Any way to solve this?

Thanks, this was very useful. I observe that since variables are named from a to f, there are some repetitive variables in master file which makes the file heavier. For example common id is repeating in all levels. how can we select variables that can be deleted.

You can always drop variables if you think they are unnecessary.

Excellent! Thank you for uploading this video. This is the first time I am trying to extract and merge any NSSO data. Your videos are really good and helpful, especially your easy-going voice and style. I am trying to merge the extracted data of 75 round NSSO data in STATA but am facing trouble. I have successfully merged levels 1,2 & 3 but after that when I am trying to merge level 4 data it is showing an error (variable PID does not uniquely identify observations in the master data r (459)). In the merge file of levels 1,2&3, the PID variables of the level are coming blank. Please help me out to sort out this problem. If possible, please share your contact details for further clarifications.

I think the process is same as from level 3 the individual data set begins so you will have to use 1:m for merging the data for this level. So, the process should be the same, however, let me know if you face any difficulty.

The commands are almost the same just one needs to be careful about the level we are working with and understand the schedule to know when we are moving from household to individual data.

Each data set is unique in itself therefore, there is no hard and fast rule. Rather, read and understand the schedule and experiment with the data and only then any NSS dataset will be workable.
