Megan, this is one of the clearest and comprehensive guides I have ever seen on the subject. I will make use of one of your suggestions right away on the "Spaced A/B placement". That is, I've been frustrated trying to use one pencil mike and one large-diaphragm condenser mike... but apparently, I've had them placed backwards! That is, I've had the large-diaphragm model close to the 12th fret and the pencil aimed toward the body near the bridge. The "large-D" mike caught too many artifacts such as my own breathing. My AT-4040 would even pick up the blinking of my eyes! So, I am going to try reversing the mike placements. Great idea! When it comes to mixing either the Spaced A/B placement or the XY-Stereo placement, I learned a nice trick to add a nice full sound. That is, add a little reverb to each channel, but have the reverb signal cross to the opposite mike's channel when it returns from the reverb. That is, the "A" mike channel will feed its light reverb to the "B" channel, and vice versa. The nice thing about this is that users can play with it without affecting the original two tracks. Again, let your ear be your guide. 🙂

Are the microphone demos that are picking up the guitar (namely the SM57) post produced or is that the actual sound it's picking up without any post production on it? I'd love to know as my SM57 sounds muddy/watery no matter where I position it. With some post help it's a lot nicer but not as nice as in this video.

So that I can record and mix later. But my room is not sound proof. My total budget is $350. A shopkeeper told me that you cannot do recording with dynamic mic. Please tell me what should I do.
