This was awesome, Sean. I've been wanting a simple demonstration of these concepts and I'll definitely be coming back to this often as a reference. Id love to see a dedicated dive deeper into phase stuff. To my untrained ear I can obviously tell the difference but have a tough time identifying the flipped phase as "wrong" or problematic/having "issues". To me it's just like "oh yeah that's different."

The sound comparison was very helpful. I think I'm going to experiment with a 70/30 ratio of bridge and twelfth fret. I look forward to listening to the full song. Chord progression sounds so good.

Thanks. This is excellent. I just got Logic Pro, and it's a lot to try and digest. Videos like this are helpful as I can go into Logic Pro, play your video, and go over it at a slow pace. I'll look forward to more of these. I have Shure mics, but the ones you have sound great.

Great lesson as usual Sean. Can you please do a tutorial video on when you make a mistake while recording or if there is a part you don’t like after you recorded and you want to replace it. For example using pre-count, loop on, punch in- not sure of the correct terms. Tanks for all you doing for us.

The triple-tracked chord voicings I thought sounded the best. The virtual drummers you discussed are also in the iOS version of Garageband and they’re a terrific inspiration for getting a groove going - I use them often. Great video 👍🏻

Hey Sean, I hate to be this guy but there's a slightly awkward correction I need to point out for people watching this: Your "regular phase" example is out of phase and your "flipped" phase corrects it. I heard it right away but I wanted to be sure and not just comment from my ears alone. If you take your video's audio and sum it to mono the phase cancelation during your "regular" phase example becomes immediately clear. If anyone reads the comments here, just mentally flip the labels in that video and consider "regular" the demo of what out of phase sounds like and "flipped" the corrective measure to put it back more in phase. The way I learned it when coming up as an engineer is that out of phase sounds are unsettling in their stereo image and almost sound like they're coming from inside your head. It's most easy to hear this on monitors, not headphones.

He just means first take is regular. Second take he flipped one of the inputs. Simple.

@@latentsea I know what he means but his examples are backwards. When he flips the phase on the 2nd example the two channels are in phase. Before that they're anti-phase and canceling each other.

I think you are confused and making this way more difficult than it has to be. When he says “regular “ he is talking about settings, not sound information. So when he says “regular “ he just means “not flipped” . ✌🏼

Thank you Sean, so cool to see you just show exactly how it’s done. It can be overwhelming to have to figure out just opening the recording program. Is GarageBand even worth using? Or should I stop and use Logic? Is Logic free? Is it just called Logic?

I'm a recording noob and use Garageband, it's perfectly usable but the onboard guitar tones are only decent clean, the mid/high gain tones are unusable while recording but you can play around with the settings after recording to make it sound better.. Logic is like $150 or something, worth it if you want decent high gain distorted guitar tones.

Wondering how the extra sound port on that guitar affects the mic placement at the 12th. Seems like you would get a lot more bass than on an acoustic without it.

GarageBand is basically a more stripped down version of Logic without all the plug-ins. That being said GarageBand and Logic are probably some of the best DAWs for recording any live instruments. The process that he is doing could easily done on GarageBand.
