You are so correct, the real basic machining is not aftem seen, I was lucky enough to get deeper into machining like you while the KZbin community was covering just what I needed to use my mill and lathe. Hope all goes well for you and your family God bless

One channel that also covers the basics well is "that lazy machinist".

great video lee on how to broach a key way. i really enjoy videos like this and sorry to hear about the passing of your inlaw. what i would like to see you do is a video series on is external internal and left hand threading on the lathe. im a 10 year hobby machinist with a 14x40 lathe a 9x49 mill and a 612 harig surface grinder just like the one you have. so this threading series would be very valuable to myself and many others im sure. thanks lee love your channell.

I made chop saw gears at black and decker 40 years ago. Ran 4 machines at same time, got tool and die wages.my broach were a lot longer than yours. They scrapped that whole factory. Main machine was acme gridley automatic multi spindle screw machine that spit out the blank. Then barber coleman gear shaper. Then broach, and deburr backside of gear.

Like Frank says, find a shallow box with carpet scraps or rags to put under the press to catch the broach... they will break...ask me how I know this. It's a good idea to keep the box under the press all the time anyway. If pressing a shaft out of bearing, etc. it keeps it from getting a ding on the end of the shaft when it falls through and if the shaft pops out of the bearing the soft landing will help keep it from bouncing and bopping you on the shin. Sorry to hear about your brother in law. My cousin Vickie died from it in Spartanburg last Friday night. My wife is a retired ER nurse and she says for me to never allow her to be put on a ventilator. She says maybe ok for a young accident victim in good health but if you're old like us it's a miserable experience with only a 5%-10% chance of coming off it alive. Keep well & Cheers from Gastonia NC

I've done those internal key slots on my old vintage mini planer. Not as easy or as fast though. But, if I don't have that particular broach, at least I have another option now. Thanks for sharing, take care.

nice job Sir.. When I cut a key way , I zero my Z after the endmill cuts a flat the size diameter of the endmill then cut half the size of the key.

Hello Lee, so sorry to hear about your misfortune this past year, I hope things will be looking up, although everywhere seems to be in an uphill battle right now. Enjoyed the video, as I always say you can never do any wrong by reviewing the basics and comparing your own ideas with those of others. Kind of like genetic diversity, I think. Anyhow, have a nice Thanksgiving and keep safe, cheers.
