If you're going to be getting the boots wet, you need to get some mink oil into the crack where the sole meets the upper. To do this, you need to get an old toothbrush, get a good quantity of mink oil on the brush and rub it into that crack. This will also preserve the stitching. You can also use mink oil on your leather watch straps to keep them supple. When I mink oil boots I let them sit for 24 hours before I rub them out.

Isn't that made of nubuck? I have several pairs of nubuck boots, and there's a special cleaner and conditioner for it. Plus the waterproof spray. Usually the label says "for suede and nubuck". Won't mink oil spoil the nubuck? I've never tried it on suede and nubuck. I only use mink oil for (smooth) leather boots.

A little pro tip, try melting the oil down to a liquid in a small container. It really seeps into the leather when it's liquified. Then setting your boots in the sun for a few hours afterward just sets it in that much more. I treated my boots when they were new, two years ago. (Maybe 200hrs of wear) And I just re-treated them. They're so much more supple than when they were new. And no cracks. They almost look brand new except the creases. Mine are Carolina 28series boots.

I got a pair of brown leather boots as a gift, but one of them is lighter in color. What’s the best way to get them to match without darkening them this much? I would prefer a permanent solution over something like shoe polish every week. Is there anything I can do?
@RussellChapman993 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of leather. Without seeing the situation but assuming not suede, get some acetone to strip the colour out of the boots, then use a Feibing leather dye to get the colour match between boots. Then a colour matched leather cream and also a leather moisturiser. After, you should be ready to go. It is a hobby of mine, I love working with Feibing+Saphir products to customize shoe colour, and polishing.

If you do not want to darken the leather, then I highly recommend using Wolverine 1000 Mile Leather Conditioners, either the grease or their oil. Both products will temporarily darken the leather for a couple of days. Apply a light coating with a horsehair dauber. Do not saturate the leather around the eyelet hardware. Give them light brush with a horsehair brush to even out the conditioner, and allow to set for 12 to 24 hours, and brush again. Depending upon how much you applied, the color will almost fully return in 1 to 7 days. The Wolverine 1000 Mile leather conditioners are really great stuff. The grease is a substitute for mink oil. The oil conditioner seems to penetrate and soften the leather more. I use these conditiners on all of my Iron Rangers and Blacksmiths. The Hawthorne Muleskinner leather likes the grease. The Briar Oil Slick leather likes the oil conditioner, of course.
