Could you possibly use low pass and high pass filters for a static mix?
@straychildren42605 жыл бұрын
A nice trick I learned at recording school was that once you finish mixing, play the mix back at very low volume and if you can still hear all your tracks/ instruments, then you already have a good mix.
@RandomVideos4U5 жыл бұрын
That’s a great tip, thankyou!

The "Pink Noise" mixing technique is also a pretty cool way to get a rough balance of levels: Here are the basic steps: 1. Load in a pink noise sample (or generator) into a track in your mixing session. 2. Bring up each track in your mix - one at a time - against the pink noise until it's barely audible above the noise. 3. Repeat for all tracks in your mix (treating any groups or busses as one track) 4. Mute the pink noise, un-mute all the other tracks, et voila - a rough and ready (but pretty good) balance of levels. If anything's unclear, let me know!
@Xxxtralargenana4 жыл бұрын
@@EDMTips so raise everything up against the noise til it's barely audible, and that should be a good level for each instrument or bus. Then playing everything together should be a good start in regards to level. I get that. But if I use pink noise from a KZbin vid for ex, what vol should I have the vid? Or does that not matter since it would still be leveled compared to the pink noise?
@EDMTips4 жыл бұрын
@@Xxxtralargenana It shouldn't matter, as it's about relative levels

Graham: I’ve been a home-recording enthusiast for the last 14 years, reading absolutely everything I could find on the topic to get better with my mixes. And this video was the first time I ever heard ANYBODY mention the static mix. That in itself is pretty surprising (unless it’s just so common no one ever thinks to mention it). What was even more surprising, though, was the difference this approach has made in my own mixes. I’ve done some recording work for friends’ albums, but most of the time I’m recording/mixing myself. And, like many (I’m guessing), I tend to mix as I go. But thanks to this video, I’ve made it a point, when I’m close to the end of a mix, to stop, strip off all of the plug-ins and volume rides that aren’t absolutely essential, zero the faders, and start again. The results have been amazing. Thank you for taking the time to talk about this little-discussed but absolutely vital step in the mixing process!

Man. This series is the ultimate guide for digital recording. Random videos of specific instructions doesn't give us the right idea of the work flow to record a song. Thanks.

I learned mixing essentially by trial and error over years of learning to record the same way. My stuff didn't sound terrible, but it also didn't sound the way I wanted it to. Decided for my solo album in 2021 that I wanted some guidance in mixing to make it sound better than my past work and this video series played a huge role in making it sound (to my ears) so good! Now I am back in 2024 working on a new song and EP and giving myself a good refresher. Thank you so so so much!!

Graham, I've just recently found your website - and I don't know how long you've been playing and recording - but I can almost guess it's been a while. I'm from the reel-to-reel days (Revox A77 - Teac A3344) and, like you, I'm blown away by the 'digital' revolution for music makers. I've finally decided to take the dive into home recording again. Thanks for sharing your phenomenal talent that you've developed over the years. It's a pleasure to watch you work.

I gotta say these series have blessed me tremendously. Having said that, what frustrates is hearing that what you are showing "in context" doesn't match the "typical." This is tempered because I don't know what these processing effects do. A suggestion/thought... It may add more time. showing, revealing the method in an isolated, muted environment is needed for people like me (those who are starting are begun and desire progress in perfecting their craft), but it not add practical value if we don't see you do it again the typical way. Side bar... it's hillarious that you mentioned that it would not be advised to make those changes in isolation and communicated a potential waste of time but then played it with everything else going against your own advise. I'm a mixture of feelings ... BUT .... I feel that you have taken us through this process so well that in even the areas of the unknown (No ex. Of your typical practice at the most critical part of your video.) I feel comforted in the spot on info you have provided and have not only subscribed but have also followed your instructions and downloaded the pdf file. Thank you for your help. Overall these videos made the complex ordinary. I guess a better statement could be made, but it has been so hard to find simplified information from professionals who don't already assume you know how you got there, as in afore knowledge. It's like, the search button landed me here... Lol at this stage I don't know what I don't know. So I'm thankful for a site and/or channel that is dedicated to meeting me where I am. Thanks

I think the most important part in recording is getting good raw tracks to begin with. It takes me a million tries to get the best take when I'm recording and even then the mixing only improves the sound a little. I would do just about anything to get raw audio tracks like his. If all he did was adjust the levels of these tracks this song would already sound 10x better than the mixes I spend days working on

Listening to the same loop for hours on end just ruins my idea I had for the song in the first place. How do I stop it from feeling like a tedious process and make it enjoyable again?

(hopefully i won't have to argue with other mixer's so much about proper eq and compression anymore. i'll just show them you're video!)

Production in general is so reliant on capturing a quality recording in the first place. Everything else is bringing it up to that next level of professional quality but really nobody can make a professional quality song with poor mic placement/noisy signals/bad DI's, etc. However, as you proved in this series (and the recording one), you don't need expensive equipment to capture a good sound, but at the end of the day, I think the most crucial and influential aspect of MIXING... is RECORDING.. ironically enough.

Great series, I began with the recording from scratch-series. I've played music for many years but am just getting interested in learning the producing part. For me the level of explication is just right. Easy but quite specific for the entry level. One constructive suggestion tho, for these series you could put a number in the title so it is easier to see in which order the episodes come. You say it in in the beginning but while browsing in youtube it could be easier to find the right one to start with. Keep up the great work!
