Outstanding advice. This changed the way I set my levels up before mastering.. I have been mastering to 6-7 lufs and failing dozens of times to produce louder results without facing issues and I am starting to appreciate this channel. I've paid for many courses and sadly never came across advice quite like what's being said in these videos. this needs to get to more producers, it could save them a lot of time!

Hello! Thanks for ur video dude, there are as always very helpfull, i apreciate. I just have some question about level, especially for SUB. Why do u send the sub in a premaster ? What premaster do ? Why will be at -4/-6db before the premaster ? Do u have some effect on Premaster who melt the sub with other part like bass or something? :) I don't understand this part ! However, thanks for everything

my premaster at the time of this video is just a limiter at -1db and then going into a soft clipper (saturator) this just allowed me to push my basses loud without them peaking the master super hard *(since they are cut at 0db max by the pre-master). the reason it gets louder in the master is purely because of gain staging it louder by pushing the output in the master rack! Hope that makes sense!

When you say your kick is hitting 0 and your snare is hitting 0, wouldn't those combined in a bus or in the master to "clip" even if you have a clipper or a limiter stopping the clip, doesn't it still distort or "compress" or lose transients?
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Ай бұрын
Yes it will still distort depending on how loud you are pushing it. But it’s clipping the transients to be at 0. So it will still be the loudest element in the mix. I don’t use a limiter on drums because it will duct the transient a lot (personal preference)

So you mix your mid basses as loud as your kick and snare? Also how much quieter do you usually mix your hats and cymbals in relation to your sub bass? And what about instruments (guitar, piano), vocals and FX?
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Basses is to taste by ear. In that situation yes.percussion is also by ears. I do that technique I showed and then being the volume to -inf and introduce it until it’s at a level I like . I’m relation to your mids it shouldn’t be higher. Vocals you would treat as a synth. Are they going to be the main sound or the support and mix accordingly (play with space too it can be fun!). Guitar apply the same mindset as above. Is it a lead that should be front and center or a support that should be pushed back a little and too the sides. Fx I just don’t have low end and typically -10 to -20 db in volume

Can you please clarify for me - we you saying kick/snare hitting at 0, basses/mids hitting at 0, and sub at -7db?

Question. When your kick and basses are at 0, how does that not make your master peak like crazy? I've tried the steps from the vid but my master is peaking at like +6
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic 7 ай бұрын
Sidechain. your basses have overlap with your kick more than likely is my guess

If your Kick and Snare are both hitting 0db and so is your Bass, then why are they not clipping when you play them together?
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Жыл бұрын
Proper sidechain. Ducting all my synths when the kick and snare hit. This allows the kick and snare to have its space and allowing synths to be loud when they are not hitting

@@wheystedmusic Thanks for the reply and sorry for the noob question im about to watch part 2 now. I have a Kick and Snare both hitting 0db and my sub is hitting -7db. I should sidechain them so the sub ducks out whenever the Kick and Snare hit and keep the master hitting 0db?
@wheystedmusic
@wheystedmusic Жыл бұрын
@@Twi66e no worries at all! I’m here to help. Biggest thing is having your sub and drop synths sudechained to your kick and snare when they hit. I would also soft clip your drop group before it goes into your master so you don’t have any peaks. I hope the mastering portion helps you understand further 🙂
