This is one of the best live tutorials I've ever seen. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain every move you made during a live service and showing that live mixing is not set before or during the service, it is moving constantly. Thank you for encouraging other to always have a teachable spirit.

It's so refreshing to see an ACTIVE sound guy. So many sound engineers at churches get everything "level" during sound check and then just sit back and watch, never never to touch the board again until service is over.

To be fair, it mostly depends on the musicians and singers. If the sound guys gets it mixed perfect and the musicians and vocalists are professional in that they are very controlled with their volumes and tone then honestly the sound guy most likely will be able to sit back and enjoy, with minor tweaks every now and then.

Thank you so much, Landon. There are so many church "how to mix" videos that have good teaching but are the sound guy or worship leader alone in the sanctuary with the board, frequently without even a track to hear. @howtorecord101 You know what, I've been a church musician for years & also been doing studio work for years. I always wondered about the differences in approach between mixing in a studio environment & mixing in a LIVE environment. Clearly you have less room for error in a live environment, but this really cleared up some things in regards to the entire process. Never seen a video like this giving a step-by-step as to the PROPER way to mix a live worship service/event. Definitely a difference between a pro like yourself doing it vs 1 of the deacons or church mothers lol. At my old church, they would just sit back there staring at the board & now I know why things always sounded so horrible. Thanks for posting! Now I have a better understanding of everything that is involved at the board when i'm sitting at the organ way up front

Wow. Just wow. I started being "the sound guy" at church a year ago. I really like this video. I like how you kept the levels balanced and also how you ALWAYS kept the praise leader above everything else. I know it is obvious, but at my church it sometimes happens that I can't hear the praise leader, either because of the bad quality wireless mics (which is bad) or the fact that the singers just don't sing loud(which is way,way worse). I just hope I had control of the budget at church, since we don't even have DI boxes. (I am really happy about the fact that I can do the sound, but still, I would really, really like if the person who handles sound budget would invest in certain things that would make our church PA way better). Thank you, again, for this awesome video, and God bless you.

You mentioned that the pastor will speak loudly and softly. It depends on your pastor's speaking style, but in many cases I've found that the range of volume at the point source (his voice) is greater than what is practical for amplification. IN other words, the amplification can magnify the effect beyond what is helpful. On the soft points it can be difficult for people to hear and on the loud points it can border on painfully loud. I typically use compression to mitigate this. There is still some change in volume, but the natural change in timbre will convey the intention behind the speaking method without becoming a distraction. Also, I've found that some over-resonant mid-low frequencies can serve as a drone to make people drowsy. So I do a negative sweep with a narrow Q between about 100 and 200 hz to find the best frequency (sometimes there might be more than one) to pull down. Then I do a positive sweep in the upper audible frequencies to find where a particular speaker forms their consonants. (You have to be careful that you don't overdo the "S's".) Besides EQ-ing the normal HPF and ultrasonic shelf, this will make amplified speech less muddy, more clear, and energized enough to keep more people pleasantly awake.

Great Video!! Trying to get a clear understanding about reverb. Is reverb used to make the sound fuller? If not when is the right time to use it?
@howtorecord10110 жыл бұрын
Nicky Savage I would use reverb as an effect to enhance the music and or vocals. Think of reverb as being able to changing the environment that you are singing in. Have you ever enjoyed singing is a stairwell. Or enjoyed the choir in the large church cathedral? Each style of music is different. I use more on slower songs than I do on faster songs. Imagine you or a rock band playing in an open warehouse. You are placing the music in that invironment. Use your judgement. It is easy to use to much. Starting out, find what you like and then turn it down a notch. Listen to music in your genre and see how they use effects. Good luck. I would enjoy hearing what you are doing. Thanks for your message.

Very good video! I liked the fact that it really was "live" mixing! The nuances of transitions are very informative. I'm aware of these; nevertheless, it's good to be reminded and affirmed of the same. Only limitation of this and similar videos is that they are usually within the context of very large and rich churches operating high-end gear and musicians who know what they are doing. I'd like to see videos in a smaller setting using low-end gear, and "imperfect" musicians and how the sound tech overcomes (to a large extent) these short-comings. I think the impact of those videos would quadruple. Again, great job! Keep it coming.

Response to Updegraff comment: Main rule is 3 to 1 ratio. If you are 1 foot from the object you want to at least be 3 feet apart. So four feet from the choir means mics need to be 12 feet apart. You can also alternate the polarity of the mics with the phase button. Just listen to it and work with that in mind. Alternating phase can get you a couple of db of gain before feedback. That's usually why I change polarity (less feedback). Let me know what works for you? Thanks for your comment.

Hey man thanks for your video I haven't finished it yet because I have to go to practice soon tonight for mixing the soundboard at my church. I never thought of keeping everything in a general medium volume and then increasing certain main vocals or musicians in parts. I do this some for guitar solos for sure. I'll probably have questions for you later. The one big thing we're having trouble is our lead vocals is clipping from either the pre-amp or compression but I'm almost certain it's pre-amp. What can I do there? Also thanks for the tip for muddy vocals by turning down the lows and mids if needed.
@howtorecord10110 жыл бұрын
***** Walk through each step of the path for the vocal mic. At each step you need to calibrate the input so that it does not clip in any of the steps. Wireless Mic transmitter? Channel Preamp Inserted to Compressor Channel Output Fader Master Mixer Output
@richtee347010 жыл бұрын
theamazingtoot, assuming gain structure techniques have been done across the whole mixing board you may be running your inputs (input gains) to hot and your outputs - subgroup and or mains not hot enough leaving little headroom on individual channels.

- (continuing) - Avioms. One of our problems is controlling the gain TO the Avioms. Also, the drums are mixed with a separate 6-channel mixer, it's stereo out is sent to one of the channels on the A&H. Another problem is we have NO subwoofers (yeah right), and also the worship leader's guitar always sounds muddy. The AUX's are used like this: AUX 1&2 are used for an external DENON recorder, AUX 5&6 are used for mixer FX. The mono out is used for stereo out to a cry room. Getting the picture now?

I would focus more on tuning and heads for the snare. A great sounding drum is going to make the biggest difference. Maybe use so dampening ring or eq rings. Then add a liitle reverb depending on the song. I don't use delay on the snare. Use a sm57 or audix i5. Which mic are you using?

Love your tutorial brother. I am just starting into the mixer at my church where we just started attending. I am looking into upluging everything on it. Right now it's a mess. Everything is all over the place. The board it a Soundcraft GB4 32 track. They have an Acoustic guitar for worship leader who is the main singer. A piano, a keyboard, 4 back singers, bass and drums. Not a lot but it all connected wrong. its all over the board. As of now they have track 1234 for back vocals, bass not connected at all, Drums on 10 or something and worship leader way up the track somewhere near the end, his vocals is on the effects tracks section. They have no reverb on at all. It's just a mess. Can you please help me with a setup, maybe a diagram or something? Today was my first day on it and I was sweating lol. So muddy and flat, crazy volumes and feedback everywhere. I talked to them today after the service and they need help. They fight with the sound every week. So I am going to do it all over from scratch. Thanks. my email is northernkinartist@gmail.com. Thanks.

+kaywood Parsons Label everything really well before you unplug things. Take alot of pictures of the channel setting. Always remember, when you do a rewire, you are now responsible for everything that is wrong. Even the things that were wrong before you started. Make sure you have a good rehearsal after you rewire to check everything before you have a service. Make sure your leadership is OK with you changing things. That way they will have your back if it doesn't go smooth. Most of the time for me it doesn't go smooth. You are going to figure out what is not working. Dead channels. Dead XLR connectors. Dead snake channels. There may be a reason that things are not plugged up in a straight forward manner. Good luck. Thanks for your message.

I miss some features on a analog mixer, my church used to have a analog board now they upgraded to a LS9. My school has a M7CL with a mono system JBL subs, monitors, and crown amps. We were built in 2010 so I would think they would put in a updated system. But during our band/choir concerts, I use plate reverb like in this video. But I have to go into a menu to make changes to the effect, And would love to have a analog mixer at that time. But digital and analog boards all have there advantages and disadvantages.

Now, that's how one manages a mixing board. Very smart engineering!

Very interesting and informative video. My soundboard isn't nearly as large as this one, but I plan to work in a larger capacity one day. I wish I could be your intern! lol
