It has been brought to my attention by a viewer, Stacie, that my instructions in regard to Turquoise are incorrect. To mix Turquoise * It’s 4tsp of dye to 1 cup of water. I apologize if this has caused any confusion. Thanks, Stacie. ☺️ Have fun tie dyeing!! ❤️🌈

lol exactly why I’m here:) So it looks like you are using 16oz bottles to shake the dye since you are only mixing 8 oz .. that way you have room to shake? Is this correct? And are you adding urea to the dyes? I ordered some because they said it was needed. Do you mix like a gallon of water with urea and use that jug to pour your 8oz cups of water that you add to the dye? Sry for all the questions, but i want to do this right…i been using tulip dye and i was not pleased with the end result. Color so dull, I’m hoping this dharma dye is just the answer I’m looking for :). TY for the great video

Turquoise is stripper glitter, it gets EVERYWHERE! It's sticky too and I used to have to fold on the same table I had my racks, guess what always showed up to party and make a mess - turquoise! 2 tips for you to consider: 1) put a glass marble in the empty bottle. When you shake the bottle the marble will help stir things up! Like a ball bearing in nail polish it moves things around for you. A downside can be that if you invert the bottle it can drop down and block the exit, I don't find this a huge problem since I know what's going on. 2) An immersion blender. You mentioned it after I started typing this and yeah, use one! You can get a USB rechargeable one from Amazon for like $12. They come with attachments small enough to go in the bottle opening and stir things up pretty well with no mess. Obviously be careful pulling it out while it's spinning or it sprays everywhere. They clean easily under running water thankfully. Questions - urea? I've now bought some but yet to use it, I don't use liquid often as it's a PITA but sometimes it's best. Does urea help much? Thickener - I have some alganate and I've tried adding it several ways. If I add it first and then add water it's a gooey blob in the corner of my bottle bottom. If I add it after a little water it floats on top as a gel and even with a mixer the gunk forms clogs - UGH! What's the best way to add this? Is alganate the best thing to use or are there better thickeners that might mix better? I like it slightly thick so the dye won't soak in and go all over the place but the clogging might nbot be worth the tradeoff I swear!

😂 Stripper glitter! I love it. I totally get it! I remember you mentioning the beads, like in nail polish bottles. I don’t have any, but it’s certainly something to consider. I have an immersion blender that I use for mixing soda ash so I’ve been hesitant to use it for mixing dye. I’m ultra conscientious and paranoid about cross contamination. Fun Endeavor, Angie, has suggested a milk frother, but I’ve yet to look into that. It’s Raven Black that’s the trouble and I use it constantly.... 🤬 Urea, I use it. I have not, not used it. So, I’m not sure what it’s like to dye without it. It’s supposed to help with dissolving some stubborn dyes like, Lemon Yellow, for example. It’s clumpy. Urea is also a “wetting” agent. So, it’s supposed to help the dye stay damp to allow it to have enough time to react with the fibers before it’s dries out for better vibrancy. 🤷‍♀️ Since I’ve always used it... well I’m not sure what would happen if I didn’t. Probably nothing, but I don’t want to find out! Thickener, Sodium Alginate. I rarely use it, but how I mix it is...Make your dye, 1cup warm water - 2tsp dye *4tsp **8tsp. Shake, shake, shake,... Then I pour it in my 16oz Pyrex measuring cup. (Any larger container, mixing bowl would probably work) I add 1tsp sodium alginate and use my immersion blender to whip it up. Let it sit for like and hour on the counter and it thickens up during that time. Depending on the consistency I pour it into my dye bottle and get to dyeing. If you need it thicker add more alginate in small increments, but keep in mind it needs time to thicken up. You should keep the unused dye in the fridge because the alginate will mold after a couple weeks. If you’re making thick water, it’s the same way. 1 cup warm/hot tap water to 1 tsp alginate. Now, I just told you I don’t cross contaminate my utensils... it’s been MONTHS since I made thickener. I just don’t do intricate detailed patterns. I’m really an ice dyer at heart. I should also mention, I do not mix my dye with soda ash. If you do that changes things... soda ash and dye cannot sit in the fridge because after a day the dye is useless. Let’s cross that bridge when we get there. I hope this helps. 😉 ~Steph ❤️🌈

@@BelladonnaDyesCo Appreciate the detailed response! I am way more loosy goosy with Soda Ash it seems! I use a big bucket and just add water and ash as it gets a little low, I figure too much is better than not enough so just shake the box and mix it up. I have a squeeze bottle of the water from the bucket too and a spray bottle. I completely understand being worried about cross contamination though! Dye is bad enough but having dye flash with stray ash would stink. My mixer came with multiple heads and was cheap, you could probably buy two or just swap heads depending on needs. I don't mix my dye with soda ash often but have once in awhile, I'll start using the urea though! I do tend to leave half full or near empty bottles around forever - ugh! I too really prefer powder and ice and I've been finding that powder mixed with soda ash HWI style works GREAT with a confectionary spoon to draw lines - it flows WAY better, even turquoise! Some designs do work best with liquid though and I combine disciplines too, it's fun even when I fail! Mostly. To help mix the dye after it's in the bottle just grab some glass marbles at the dollar store and drop one in each bottle. I also use them to stick in shirts and wrap to get weird circle geode sort of effects :) Just don't let them go into the disposal or drain while washing out! Love the videos for ideas. Had someone in my office today shocked to learn I make my own stuff, they thought I was buying it! :)

@@BLKMGK4 Good for you! That’s a compliment. Maybe your coworkers would want you to make them some and you could earn a few bucks. I’m super conscientious about measuring everything out. The only time I let loose is during ice dye. This is so helpful. I received a Dharma Tie Dye starter kit last Christmas and I just now decided to make some liquid dyes. In my mind it was one of those things that would take 2 minutes and I kept putting it off, but it really does take a bit of time. You have to keep all your stuff clean and make you take all the steps to make sure dye doesn't get everywhere. I still need a little funnel. Though for now I'm using a little spoon that came with a little pre made lunch package for my teaspoon. I like it cause it's skinny, but I do have to double the dye. I wish they would've added a funnel to their kit. Swap it out for the urea powder. Don't even know what it's for.

Yes, mixing dye is very messy. Just clean up as you go. Urea is a wetting agent. It helps break the surface tension and keep the project damp during the batching process. You’ll be fine just using water. Dharma has a lot of information on their website about tie dyeing and the chemicals. Just type in urea. 😁❤️🌈

I'm obsessed with your videos and a HUGE fan which you might remember from my comments on a few of your other videos but I wanted to give you a little friendly "FYI". Someone may have already brought this to your attention, but at the 2:10 mark you stated "the next color is turquoise which is 2*" and then you give instructions for 2*'s yet a moment later at the 2:39 mark, when you show the container, you state to "take note of the 1* next to the word turquoise". So, you might want to edit the video for those who are newbies or who simply didn't catch the mistake such as I did.

I soak my shirts in soda ash from 20 minutes to a couple days sometimes. Urea is a wetting agent for the dye. It is not necessary as long as you keep the shirt covered well during batching. Plain tap water will work if that’s all you have. Calsolene oil can be used. Glauber’s salt. If you’re just starting out... you need soda ash and procion dye & tap water. Once you get a feel for it you can add all the rest. Hope this helps. 😁 ❤️🌈

Hello! We have been having a great time tie dying at home with Dharma but are planning on a tie dye event while on vacation and I'm trying to simplify and streamline things. When we first started with Dharma I read all of their instructions and I found the instructions saying to "paste" the dye by adding only a little urea water to the powder to smash up the clumps, and then add the rest of the water, to avoid sharp specks of the color on shirts due to undissolved dye. I am wanting to just go ahead and put the powder into the bottles and transport them that way so that I can just add the urea water and go. Have you had any trouble or sharp specks mixing your powder this way right into the bottles?
@BelladonnaDyesCo
@BelladonnaDyesCo 2 жыл бұрын
No. I used to shake, shake, shake. Yellows can need more shaking. Some of the reds can be a pain. Otherwise you could pre-fill your bottles with dye then add water when you reach your destination with no problem. If it’s a one afternoon event you could even add soda ash to the mix and eliminate the need to pre-soak your shirts. After 24 hours the dye would begin to turn pastel and at 48 hours it would be null. Hope that makes sense. ❤️🌈

Tap. water ice. Urea isn’t needed for ice dyeing. Urea is strictly for dissolving stubborn dye and it’s a wetting agent for liquid techniques. Since ice is pushing so much moisture I have never found it necessary during my ice dyes. You could freeze it if you really wanted to. ❤️🌈

As long as you don’t mix soda ash into it, it will last a couple weeks. I recommend trying to only mix what you’re going to use that day. It’s begins to crystallize and degrade with each day. Ultimately turning pastel. If you’re using a dye kit, like Tulip, the dye last 24 hours. The soda ash is mixed into the dye. ♥️🌈

You can go to the craft store or Amazon and try a kit and see if you like tie-dyeing. Then Dharma is pretty affordable. Check the description box for links, they make it easy to shop. ❤️🌈

I just received a shipment of Dharma. This video was very helpful to teach how to mix. I received Bright Green that had (T) beside the name. I received Turquoise which had *(T). Do you know what that means? Thank you so
@BelladonnaDyesCo

The “T” stands for turquoise. It’s telling you that the color has turquoise in it and requires maximum batch times to become the full color. 24-48 hours at 70° or higher. The “*” indicates how much to mix. 1 cup of water to 2 tsp dye, *4 tsp dye, **8 tsp dye. Hope this helps Susan. ❤️🌈

Dharma instructs a few days. I can tell you I’ve used dye that is a week or two old in relatively cool weather with no issue. Older dye might give a more pastel color. I recommend trying to mix only what you need.❤️🌈 Small Batch Recipe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGTbc4CDoZKlnsk

Brenda, I have the same issue, a lot!! It’s not you nor Dharma dyes. The dye with the asterisks *, ** give me the most trouble. I use my immersion blender but still have issues sometimes. I think some colors don’t want to dissolve. Urea is supposed to help. I have a tutorial on that. It’s a wetting agent that’s supposed to help dissolve stubborn dyes and keep the project damp during batching. Hope this helps! Good luck!! ❤️🌈

I used the hand blender for the first time recently and it took 1/3 of the time and there were almost no clumps. You can shake some of those like the black till you cant do it anymore and there will still be clumps. The hand blender had almost none. I had an extra one around because I had an "unfortunate" accident (the the garbage disposal in the sink) with one of the attachments I used so I got a new one, but the old with the simple blade attachment was fine. It's worth the 30 bucks.

You can do it that way, Erik. The simple answer is the tsp is what I had near me at the time of recording. In keeping with Dharma’s directions and to not confuse the masses… it’s 8 oz water to 2 tsp dye, *4 tsp, **8 tsp. Thanks for watching and commenting. ❤️🌈

Yes, everyone does it differently. You do not have to use urea. Urea is a wetting agent and will help some stubborn dyes dissolve better, Lemon Yellow, Raven Black, reds…. it helps the fabric stay damp during batching. You can start using your dyes right away with plain tap water. 1 cup of tepid water (don’t use super hot water) to 2 tsp dye, * 4 tsp dye, ** 8 tsp dye. Hope this helps. ❤️🌈 kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3nPgKZ-l52LZ7M kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWG2fKOwatuMh68 kzbin.info/aero/PLnzbiHDLbWnUOWqT4-N-0lT2zzDrN0gNA

I keep seeing that people add Urea?
@BelladonnaDyesCo
@BelladonnaDyesCo 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do too. That’s what you see me pouring into the measuring cup. It’s called “chem water” Urea is a wetting agent. It also helps some stubborn dyes dissolve. The theory is, the urea helps the dye stay damp so it has time to react with the soda ash and natural cotton fibers for maximum vibrancy before it dries out. Is urea 100% necessary? No, it’s not! It’s completely a matter of preference. Here is a tutorial on mixing urea: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3nPgKZ-l52LZ7M
