How to mix the Procion dyes into liquid dyes as you prepare to do some tie-dye.
* I have found that warm water works better to dissolve dyes than cold water, and I use a fine mesh strainer in my funnel, there is a link below.

I recently came across your channel while scrolling through KZbin. I ended up binge watching for 7 hours. You have inspired me to try to start tie dyeing. I dyed my first shirt this weekend, and even though I have a long way to go, I truly enjoyed the satisfaction of the completion. I just wanted to reach out and let you know how much I appreciate every thing that you have contributed to this art. I look forward to learning a lot more in the future.

You are welcome, here is my Beginner's Playlist which has lots of helpful tips and tricks to tie-dye when you are getting started : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo as for those kits, yeah they do not work as well as the Procion dyes.... part of that is because they have the soda ash mixed in with the dye powders, so as soon as you add water to the bottle, the dyes are active and should be used right away... the longer they sit, the weaker they get BUT, with Procion Dyes, you can mix them up and have them around at room temp (here in Oregon that is 65-70F) for a couple weeks and still get decent colors, but if you store in a fridge after mixing, then they will last much longer I buy my dyes from Dharma, but here are the main places in the US to buy them, and I know at least dharma has a kit with the good dyes if you want to try it out first : CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/ CO : CO Wholesale Dye Corp. : www.bulkdye.com NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/ MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/ MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
you are welcome and I have had the mixed dyes still give decent colors after 2-3 weeks at room temp (here in Oregon that is 65-70 F) ... now they are not bad after this, the color they produce just get lighter and will look more muted .... I put duct tape on my bottles so I can write the mix date on them, then when I get to the 2-3 week mark, If I still have a lot of dye left, I will add another scoop of dye and blend it again, this will freshen it back up, but then I make sure to use it up .... I Like contrast, so sometimes when I have a couple older dyes, I like to use them in conjunction with new dyes... then some of the colors are bright and pop nicely and some of the colors are lighter or more muted... I like these combos so it makes it easy for me to use up these dyes no matter how old they are The best way to store the dyes is in a spare fridge if you have one, the dye will last much longer, I have some that were mixed 2 months ago that still gave me good color ... I just pull them out of the fridge n the morning if I am going to be dyeing that day so they can come up to room temp (just seems like the penetrate the fabric better when warm, but I am not sure on that, just my thoughts)

Hi, Love, love, love all the videos. Question... Do you ever use Urea? What does it do? Any videos about it? Pros, Cons? Thanks & have a great day! Al
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 10 ай бұрын
Thank you ... and yes I do use Urea sometimes ... it is a wetting agent, so it will help keep the dyes wet for longer period of time ... this is good as you do not want your tees to dry out while batching or the dye bonding stops... so if you live in a hot dry climate, this can be helpful Also, Urea will help to dissolve more dyes in the liquid... this can be helpful when mixing black dyes as I use twice the amount of dye powder as I do for most other colors ... but in general it can help the dyes dissolve better And, if you are making thick dyes to 'paint' with, then the Urea is helpful as you are only applying a thin layer of dye to a dry tee, so the Urea will once again help keep the dye wet for longer so it can bond with the cotton fibers If I use it, I will add it to my water along with the dye powder and blend all together ... I will add 2-3 tbsp for 32oz of dye

My sincerest thanks for all of your helpful videos. I understand the concept of wearing a mask. I was a huge Wiz of Oz fan in my teens. Read a story about the character Scarecrow…who was originally cast by Buddy Epson (Beverly Hillbillies). Makeup initially used powdered silver by putting a lotion on his face and then blowing the silver powder on it to stick. The powder got into the actors lungs so badly he was hospitalized and replaced by Ray Bolger. It also said that the Witch’s face stayed a shade of green for months after production…..so yep so dyes can be dangerous.

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subbing! and you are welcome. and thank you, I have heard the relaxing part quite a bit, even had a request to read a book .... anyways, for pastel colors, you just need to mix the dyes very weak.... you can either start with the powder and use a fraction of what it calls for, OR, you can fill a bottle most of the way with water and then add some of your liquid dye to it .... I plan to make a video, but I have to experiment some with the dyes to get some more exact measurements ... then I will do a video... but this will help you get started if you want to make some pastels now

I was watching some video on mixing dye, and they mentioned urea? Is it necessary when mixing? I purchased some just in case but a lot of videos I’ve seen only use water with the dharma dyes .
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
Urea is a wetting agent and not it is not required for tie-dye. Since it is a wetting agent, it will help keep the tees wet while batching(if the tee dries out, then the dyes will stop bonding with the cotton) , great if you live in a hot dry climate. But putting the tee in a bag or a tub with a lid is sufficient in most places. Also, Urea will help you mix more powder into the liquid, which can be handy for colors like black, but once again, not required. When I use it, I add 1-2 tbsp for 16 oz of dye I do add it to my thick dye mix when I am going to be dye painting as it will keep the thin layer of dye wet for a longer period of time to allow the dyes to bond.

You are my favorite tie dye teach, so no disrespect when I ask: I've always heard & had better luck adding water to dye rather than the reverse, & when I started I was told to add urea, but you don't do either of those things. What don't I know?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you.... I am glad to be of help sharing what I know and the videos turned out to be a lot of fun to do as well.... I am doing a school event this month so I had to take a break, but I will be back at them again soon ...... so as for mixing dye, when I learned, I was shown to fill the bottle half way with water, add the dye and shake like crazy, then fill the rest of the way.... over the years I have learned new methods such as using the hand blender and it works great for me, but I have heard of people 'pasting' their dyes (adding a bit of water to the powder and making a paste ad then adding more water.... so really what I am doing is showing how I do it, but there are so many different ways, so I say if you are having good results with your method, go for it .... as for the Urea, first off, it is not needed, but what it does, is help mix more dye in the water, and it helps keep the dyes wet while they batch, which is good if you live in a dry climate..... I do use it myself, but for this video, I wanted to show the basics of what is needed so when people are just starting off they do not feel like they need to buy so many more things because it can get quite expensive .... I hope this answers your question..... enjoy your tie-dye adventure!!

MrTieDye when do you use the urea? Do you buy it from Dharma? I have purchased some better reactive dye. I am going to get a mask. My little world of friends and doctors are about to have fit, but I have fought squamous cell skin cancer since 2008. It was not diagnosed until 10/14/2014. We have kept it at stage one except for one removed was in transition to the next stage they say. Can’t prove it by me... above my pay grade. I am not going to live in a plastic bubble. They told me I would die from the treatment within five years and I am still here! They said it was a thousand difference things until I was a about as much of a witch as I can be and forced them to take a biopsy. (You do reach a point where you are sick of the BS, do something! Even if it is wrong!) I did mention, I live in the sticks! When do you add the urea when you use it? Hey, it could be like the Celts ...just saying ... if they mess with me too much, I just might have to enlighten them about urea ....and make them all wonder! If I am on borrowed time as one of my lovely cousins said.... Then let’s make the most of it! I am Scot, so to quote Wallace .... “Every man will die, but not every man will truly live.” I will be doing it with a dust mask ... I do have a brain ....lol! I just have a serious, “Watch Me!” personality that I come by honestly from my Mom. So, when do you add the urea? And pros and cons? The Celts did it to set the dye.

I do sometimes ... but it is not required for these dye to work ... the Urea is a Wetting agent so it will hep keep the dyes wet for a longer period of time to allow the dyes to bond with the cotton fibers... but you can also bag them, or put them in a tub with a lid to keep them wet .... Also, it helps to dissolve the dyes when you are mixing them, so I use it when I mix my black dyes as I use twice the amount of dye powder as I do any other color

hello and welcome ... for beginner's, I recommend getting at least the primary colors, turquoise, fuchsia and lemon yellow, and then at least one black.... this way you can mix the secondary colors if you are on a tight budget.... if not, then you can expand into some other colors as well... I love the emerald green, deep orange and plum for my secondary colors... but also, I dye a lot of rainbow color schemes.... you can go to which ever site you are going to buy from and check out their colors and just pick some of the colors that jump out at you ... I know people love all different color schemes... some want to dye in more earth colors, if that is you, then you may get a brown or two .... just have fun

Love your videos! Just getting into it and really appreciate how much you post on how to do all this. I have one question though, I have ordered from both Dharma and grateful Dyes and for 8 ounces, Dharma says to add 2 tsp of dye and grateful says to add 4-6 tsp. Do you recall having to use that much when you have used dyes from grateful dye?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you and you are welcome, I love to help other have success with this art. As for dye amounts.... it can vary a lot depending on who you ask, so all I can do is tell you how I do it ..... I think the base amount dharma states of 2 tsp is a good starting place and ten if you want to make them darker, you can add more powder .... so for 16 oz of dye, I recommend in my video here that you use 4 tsp, but I tend to use 5-6 tsp for most colors, BUT, for black I use twice that amount and for red or emerald green I will add a little extra but not twice So the best thing I can offer is start with the minimum and test it out and see how you like the color... and then add more to it if you want the color a little darker/brighter

After I mlx the procion mx dyes, how long would those mixed dyes be good for?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
I have mine around for 2-3 weeks at room temp (65-70F here in Oregon) I put a piece of duct tape on the bottles so I can change the date of when they were mixed and at the 3 week mark, if I still have a lot of one color, I will add another scoop of dye and blend it again .... ALSO, if you have a spare fridge to store your mixed dyes in, they will last much longer

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
@@patriciahazeltine9986 yeah the heat is going to speed up setting of the dyes... but it will also shorten the length of time your mixed dyes will last.... on the hot days here in Oregon, I will put some wet rags on my dyes to keep them cool, or depending on how much I have mixed up, I will store them in an ice chest... no ice, but the insulation helps

Hello and Thank you!! ... as for Urea, yes I use it sometimes... when I was doing more dyeing, I used it all the time, I would mix up some chemical water that included Urea and then use that to mix my dyes with .... but after I slowed down on doing tie-dye, then the dye water was going bad before I used it all up.... so now I just use it sometimes, it helps to dissolve your dyes, so I use it for my black dyes since I use double the dye with it .... Urea also is a wetting agent, so it helps to keep your tees wet while they batch... especially good if you live in a hot dry climate, otherwise, bagging or putting in a tub with a lid is good enough to keep them wet

I use Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I buy most of mine from Dharma Trading Co. www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html I have also purchased the same kind of dyes from Custom Colours in NC and Grateful Dye in CO. Here is a video on how to mix the dyes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXfNY2tviZt1jMk as for Black, it is one of the more difficult colors to get with tie-dye so here are some more tips on what I do to get a good black ...... How do get your black dye so dark? I use three different black powders in my jar... New, Better and Raven Black all from dharma. I poured all three dye powders into one jar, shook it up and I use that as my black dye. I add 2 tbsp of salt & 2 tbsp of urea to 32 oz of luke warm water, the urea helps to mix more powder into the water and the salt is supposed to help 'push' the dye out of the water and into the fabric when doing LWI. I use twice as much black dye powder than I do for any other color. For 32 oz of dye, I use 4 heaping tbsp's of dye powder, SO, a little math here >> one level tbsp is 3 tsp, so with my heaping tbsp, I guess it is 5-6 tsp per scoop, so times 4, that is 20-24 tsp for 32 oz of black dye, or 10-12 for 16 oz of black dye dye. When mixing the black dye, even with the urea, all of the powder still does not dissolve on the first blend, so I carefully pour it through a filter into the bottle, but I leave the bottom of the cup as there tends to be 'black gunk' there. This powder is still needed, so I add more fresh water to the cup and blend again and then this powder will usually dissolve. DO NOT pour it out, or your black will not have its full recipe included and the color will be off. One more thing, black dyes take longer to set up, so that is why I started leaving my dyes to batch for 48 hours... it was for the black dyes to start and then I liked how all of my colors looked, so I started batching everything I dye for 48 hours with some heat. 70F is a good temp to batch at, but I stack my tub near a heater vent or out in the sun depending on the weather so they get some nice heat while batching.

You are welcome, I am glad to be of help you you as I love to help others have success with this art. As for the Procion Dyes, I am not sure on dyes that have sat of a couple months, I know they produce lighter and lighter color over time .... I write dates on my bottles so I know when they were mixed and then at the 2-3 week mark, if I still have a lot of dye left, then I will add another scoop of dye and blend again and then make sure to use it up before 2-3 weeks time. BUT, I am not sure of the condition of the dye since it has sat for so long, it may be fully exhausted .... there is no way of knowing except to just try it out ...... But, personally, I would mix new dyes if I had orders to do otherwise you may end up having to re do them and that can be a pain. ALSO, I would still play with that old dye as it may be a nice contrasting color to your new dyes, or just give some muted results..... but that is just me, I love to experiment 😉✌️ I wish you success in whatever you do, sorry I cannot be of more help here, but I can only speak to what I know

I also put duct tape on the bottles so I can write the mix date on them.... at the 2-3 week mark, if I still have a lot of dye left in a color, I will add another scoop of dye to it and blend again, this will freshen it up so I can use it up, but I only do this one time, or you might get a build up BUT ....... if I store them in a fridge they last even longer... I have gotten good colors from dyes that were mixed 2-3 months earlier ... so I keep my dyes in a little fridge now when I am not using them....

If you want good vibrant colors stay away from tulip or pretty much any dyes found at your local hobby shops. I suggest looking at Custom colors, Dharma, or grateful dyes for good Procion dyes. Also make sure to buy soda ash as you will need it to bind the dye to your fabric.

@@p.hillll they are the measurements I use when I am mixing my dyes so yes. Also (the hardest part) make sure you let it 'batch' or sit undisturbed for at least 24 hours. You'll need at least 75 degree heat and to keep it moist so for me ill use a grocery bag or a plastic tote. If you don't have a steady heat you can use a space heater just make sure it's not close enough to melt the plastic.. Rinse while still tied up in cold water to wash the soda ash away, then gently raise the temp to warm and then hot. That will take out any extra dye. I also suggest to wash they newly dyed items using syrenthapol detergent afterwards (also can be bought at Dharma). Store bought detergent sometimes contains soda ash so if you reintroduce that to your garments you can get more bleeding and staining.

Hello, I hope you are well! I have a question about grateful dyes. I placed an order with Dharma but they are backlogged. As it’s been over 10 days now and my order hasn’t been shipped yet, I was wondering if I should go ahead and order black dye from grateful dyes. Okay, I’m finally getting to my question here lol have you used their black dye and if so, is it any good? I have a black dye here but it’s not so good. It dried into like a purple-Ish/blue. I started off with a cheap tie dye kit from amazon (tulip). But because I love how vibrant others shirts look with Dharma I decided to go ahead and order from them. But, as I wait I was just wondering if it’s a good idea to purchase the black.
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 4 жыл бұрын
I have purchased some dyes from Grateful dyes, but I have not tried their black out, so I cannot comment on it. there is more info here than what you asked, but this is a question I answered for someone else about my black so I thought I would share it with you ....

Hi Mr. TieDye, I realize this is a old video but I would really appreciate the answered to my question. I have used Dharma Procion dyes for years and have also added urea . I always get speckling ruining many things that can't be fixed. I feel like I'v mixed them well and don't see clumps but it happens so often I'm very discouraged to do it any more. PLEASE help. What am I doing wrong ?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
yeah those tiny specks of dye can be a problem .... using urea will help dissolve the dyes, I also use Luke warm water and when I am done mixing, I pour the dye through a fine mesh filter like this : Dye Strainer : amzn.to/3sRv1It ~ I receive credit if you use this link But, one thing to be aware of, if you pour though the filter and have a lot of 'gunk' then I will tap this back into the cup, add more water and blend ... you do not want to toss the gunk as it is part of the dye recipe for the color.... the filter should be fairly clean when you pour though it a few specks are fine to toss... I hope that made sense the other thing I do is turn my tees inside out when I dye them, this way the tiny specks are on the inside of the tee ... you can check this with any tees that have speck on them... look on the inside of these tees and see if you have specks there as well, normally there are none, or there is less than the outside ... I hope these tips help

Can you still use again the remaining dye by just storing it into the bottle?If yes, how long will it takes for it to be usable..thanks for such a good teacher and a wonderful artist BTW❤️
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
yes you can... these Procion Dyes will last 2-3 weeks at room temp, which here in Oregon is about 65-72 .... BUT, when I got a fridge ... my dyes now last much longer, I have not done an official test, but I have used dyes that were mixed a couple months ago and still got decent color.... not as bright as fresh mixed, but not faded either..... BUT, if you add soda ash in with your liquid dyes, then they will only last a couple hours.... that is why the store bought kits must be used right away .... so, with Procion Dyes, you mix you dyes separately from the soda sh.... I soak my tee shirts in soda sh for 20 minutes and then wring out the excess anyways, just in case you need more tips and tricks, here is my Beginner's Playlist : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 2 жыл бұрын
No, I do not use the Urea much now.... there was a time when I used it all the time in my chemical water, but I am not dyeing enough to make the chem water, so I just mix with plain water .... BUT, the Urea is a wetting agent, so if you live in a hot dry climate, it can be quite useful.... also, it helps with mixing/dissolving the dyes... so I do still use it sometimes for colors like black since I use twice as much as the other colors as for the rinsing, I will rinse between colors like orange and purple because they make brown, but if I am going from yellow to orange, then I do not worry about it ... I am pretty relaxed with this art and just love to go with the flow of it ✌🏻

I’m asking this question without having watched the entire video but do you not add urea? Is the urea a necessary step/ingredient? 🤔
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 3 жыл бұрын

Dharma recommends using Urea in the dye. Any opinion on that method?
@MrTieDye
@MrTieDye 9 ай бұрын
Urea is a wetting agent, so in dry climates it can help keep your dyes on the tee wet which is good as the dyes will stop bonding if they dry out, but most times batching your tees in a tub with a lid or in a bag will keep them damp another reason to use Urea is it helps to dissolve the dyes better, they can be especially helpful when mixing black as I use twice the amount of dye powder in my black than I do other colors, but in general, it helps the dyes dissolve better. so, the Urea is helpful but it is not required ... I use it sometimes, like I said with my Black... and I add it to my Thick Dye mix as I sometimes 'Paint' with thick dye, so the Urea will help keep the dye wet for longer while it batches. when I do use Urea, I add 2-3 tbsp for 16 oz of dye and I just add it in when I add the dye powder and then blend all together (or shake if you do not have a blender)
