How to Mix Prep for success!

Doing just a little bit of preparation before you mix your next song or project can save you lots of time and reduce headaches!
Here's some of the things I do to Prep a song to get mixed before I even hear what the song is!
These steps get the mundane out of the way before hand, so when it comes to mix time, I can let me ears and brain be creative!!

I created a template with all of my standard folders with busses already set up. After gain staging, I drag the files to the appropriate folders.

cheers Tim. My mix prep features a few additional steps. When working with a multi mic'ed drum kit i always phase align my mics. The difference it makes in terms of impact is massive. I align Overhead L to Overhead R, then align the kick in and out to the overhead, do the same with the snares and the toms. I ensure i align room L to room R. The sonic difference is immediate. After that its gain staging to get tracks at an equal volume. I also do lots of noise removal (guitar squeaks, amp hum) and try and de-bleed where i can. Takes time but worth it down the line.

Also, from an ease of working point of view I'll consolidate multiple tracks of different recordings of the same instrument into 1 track to make it easier to navigate. If I've got, say 3 acoustic guitar tracks all playing parts that don't overlap then I'll merge them into 1 track. This helps if you got a huge session with way too many tracks, cuts down on the scrolling
