My daughter forgot and used cold water from the hose to mix the soda ash, it got hard lumps in it. The lumps wouldn't dump out with the water so I put really hot water in and the lumps dissolved. Maybe it was because it wasn't one solid block but I was glad because we were able to use it. We did 19 tshirts with the family and they all turned out great.
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
I am glad you were able to use it.... the hot water certainly helps to dissolve it faster... but more important is to shake or stir as soon as you dump in the soda ash .... I was mixing up 3 gallons once and as soon as I poured the soda sh into the bucket, the phone rang... I did not think about it and just walked away... when I came back 20 minutes later, the soda ash was in one solid black at the bottom of the bucket LOL 😂 anyways, I am glad yours worked and you had a fun party!!

What’s a good alternative to “spinning” after soaking w the soda ash? Or, can I just wring it out and hang it up?
@MrTieDye5 жыл бұрын
yes... I used to do it that way for the first few years... and some people have bought mop buckets with the wringer in them and they use those to get the excess soda ash out .... BUT, I do NOT recommend putting them into a dryer as a method of drying them from the soda soak..... the fine dust from the soda ash can build up and cause a fire... happened to one dyer that I know of

So it sounds like I could just hang some to dry (will be gone a couple days) AFTER the rinsing to get soda ash chunks out...and then probably mist them, right? But only mist with soda ash, as regular water will wash the soda ash out?
@lightninseed Жыл бұрын
So do you let them dry before dying them?
@MrTieDye Жыл бұрын
it depends on how I tied the tee up ... if I am doing just a spiral or a scrunch, then I will tie and dye it barely damp with soda ash ... BUT, if I am doing a mandala type fold like a RonStar (kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6nRqoevlrKmqa8) or Radiowave, (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqG1f5R-p7SCsK8) then sometimes I will tie them while damp and then let them dry for a few days, then I dye them... this can help with saturation of the deeper layers of fabric... the liquid will spread through dry fabric, thus reaching the inner layers of the fabric .... one issue that can come upon when you let the tee dry before you dye it... the dye sometimes will want to roll off the dry fabric rather than soak in, if this happens, then I lightly spray the tee with sod ash water, this will 'break' the surface tension of the fabric so to speak and allow the dyes to soak in BUT, there are other times like with the Star Flower design (kzbin.info/www/bejne/haTZl52LpNh2hNU) it has many layers, but I dye it the same top and bottom.... SO, I can dye just from the top until I see color coming through to the bottom in each section... I usually lay the tee on a clean dry towel while dye as this will help 'pull' the liquid dyes down into the tee as it soak up liquid from he bottom of the tee... once I see good color in each section, then I will flip and add one layer of dye to the bottom I apologize if I gave too much info here, but that is a more detailed question than it sounds... and since you may be new to tie-dye, I also want to share my Beginners Playlist with you as it has lots of helpful tips and tricks to tie-dye in it : kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

Hi. Love the channel! Quick question about soda ash. In your videos on folding and dyeing, the shirts look dry. Do you let the fabric dry after soaking in soda ash? Thanks
@MrTieDye5 жыл бұрын
thank you .... most of the time I will soak in soda ash and sin them out in the washer so they are barely damp.... that is my preferred method of folding and dyeing .... but sometimes when I am going to have multiple layers of fabric, I will either fold and tie while damp and then let it sit for a few days to dry out, or I will let the tee dry first and then fold and dye it dry.... the dry fabric helps with saturation when you are working on stuff like mandalas as the dye likes to spread or 'wick' through the dry fabric.... bt sometimes the initial dye will want to roll off the dry fabric, .... so I will use a spray bottle and mist the tee with just a little bit of soda ash water and then the dye will soak in instead of roll off

I have not used the tulip myself, but from what I have heard from other dyers ... you should still do a pre soak in soda ash and wait until you have all of your tees and stuff tied up before you mix the dyes... from what I have heard, Tulip dyes have some soda ash mixed in with the dyes, so as soon as you add water to them, they are active and need to be used within a few hours for best results... and I would batch for at least 24 hours, but I leave all of my stuff for 48 hours ... have fun

@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
you can eliminate that step with these dyes... they are activated by the soda sh, so I do a pre soak in soda ash, and then spin out the excess so it is barely damp.... then when the dye is added, the soda ash activates it and the dyes start to bond with the cotton.... then I leave mine to 'batch' for 24 48 hours ... then I start the rinsing and washing process... and then they are good to go .... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8

"What to do if you run out of Na2CO3 (soda ash) well you can make it with CHNaO3(baking soda). Here is what you do dump it, spread it, bake it, 200 degrees for an hour. and bang there is a chemical reaction 2 NaHCO3(s) → Na2CO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(g) yep thats what just happened in your oven." no it is not ..... soda ash's official name is Sodium Carbonate ..... it gives a higher pH than the baking soda will .... it can be found at Pool/Hot tub supply stores, and it is also called washing soda
@plusibo5 жыл бұрын
No, but baking soda can easily be converted into soda ash by baking it at 200° for 1 hour.

Can I use Jobos Dyes?
@MrTieDye6 жыл бұрын
I have not heard of them before ..... I use fiber reactive Procion dyes because they are professional dyes and yield bright colors ..... I do not know how the Jobos dyes work, but if that is what you have, then use them, but I would follow the directions for mixing them that should be on the package instead of my instructions .... and I do not know if you need soda as, but it should say on your package of dye

what kind of dyes do you use?? how strong do you mix your dyes?? ( i have a video that shows how I mix my dyes if you need it) after I dye my tees, I let them sit for at least 24 hours to let the dyes set up good and temperature in the room should be at least 65, but warmer is better....

Do you have to use Soda Ash when you tie dye? And is there anything else you can use?
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
with the fiber reactive Procion dyes, soda ash is needed to activate them and I am not aware of anything else to use ..... BUT, soda ash can be found at pool supply stores and in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda ... just check the label to make sure it say 100% Soda ash or Sodium Carbonate .... and pH Up is another product that is just soda ash . and one more thing, you can turn baking soda into soda ash by heating it in the oven .... here is my video on soda ash where I mix some, and make some .... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWUfoZ4Zdh0j5o

Can I use baking soda instead? Good video btw
@MrTieDye6 жыл бұрын
baking soda will not give you the pH level you need for the proper reaction of the dye..... so your tee would be faded....... but I know there are methods out there to heat the baking soda in the oven first and then use it as soda ash ... but I do not know the details.... but if you do a search on youtube there may be a video on how to turn baking soda to soda ash

Ayy any pool supply or even WalMart sells something called "pH up" that has sodium carbonate in it. Soda ash is another name for sodium carbonate.

Why use soda ash?
@MrTieDye6 жыл бұрын
soda ash raises the pH level of the cotton fabric which causes the fiber reactive dye to form a bond with it .... so without the soda ash the dye will not stick to the tee shirt
@hunterzamora76834 жыл бұрын
Hi, what do I use to make sure I have the correct size of cup for the soda ash container? I live in asia and we have different sizes of cup. Or to make it easier, how much water in ml should I use to measure it on a cup? What happens if I mixed a bit more soda ash onto water like 1.2 cup of soda ash onto 1 gallon of water? Will that affect the dye?
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
One cup is equal to 236.5ml so mix that amount of soda ash powder into one gallon of hot water or 3785.4 ml and if you get a little extra in there, it is not going to affect the dye .. basically you are shooting for a pH of around 10.6 - 11.0 and one cup to one gallon gets you in the range you want most times
@hunterzamora76834 жыл бұрын
@@MrTieDye so I should just pour 236.5ml of water onto my cup then see where it would level and I should consider that as 1 cup and level it the same with soda ash? I'm just concerned I may have less or more ash onto 1 gallon of water and might be less or over the pH level. I just wanted to make sure so there won't be any need for pH meter device.
@MrTieDye4 жыл бұрын
@@hunterzamora7683 here in the US, one cup is an official measurement, so I went to a converter chart to get the 236.5 ml for you ... so that is equal to one cup of soda ash, so yes, mix that amount with one gallon of water and that should get you the pH you need
