Serban Ghenea has mixed all three of the artists you discussed What I've learned from him is he keeps the mixes simple, and doesnt want to overprocess anything I think you could have eliminated half of the plugins and ended up with a better vocal sound You did some moves which contradicted each other and that lead to overprocessing A good starting chain would be a compressor (cla76), followed by an EQ (metric halo channel strip) thats one specific example but all you need is a compressor and an eq to start with along with the reverb and delay sends which could have been pre made
@MakePopMusic11 ай бұрын
Serban doesn’t have to do much because this is all done by the engineers and producers before they’re sent to him. You’ll never know how much stuff an actual top 40 song has baked in it because it’s been handled by multiple producers, multiple engineers, printed and bounced countless times, then mixed, then mastered. If you saw the multis that someone like Serban gets, you’d think the song was basically mixed 99% of the time.
@MakePopMusic11 ай бұрын
The moves I did don’t contradict each other. Each tool has a purpose and a sound. So even though I may take out 200hz on one eq, and add it back in later doesn’t cancel them out. The Scheps eq curve is wildly different that the Puigtec curve, and there are things like saturation in that equation as well. These examples were for pop vocals, which are almost always decently processed.
@MakePopMusic11 ай бұрын
I think as long as every move or addition has a purpose, use as many as you need. Some vocal mixes have 2 inserts used, some have none, some have 10 because that’s what the song and mix called for. No right or wrong way, all that matters is that the moves are intentional and not just blindly throwing shit on a mix because you assume it’s necessary.
@andrewaboy885211 ай бұрын
@@MakePopMusic I don't think saying Serban doesnt have to do much is accurate. While youre right ill never know without having the pro tools sessions or multis, and I agree that many engineers have worked on the song before it gets to Serban, he has talked about the sessions he gets and how all the different engineers usually make contradictory or unecessary mixing moves, and he usually starts by taking off whats not needed for the sound. If he wasn't responsible for that sound they wouldnt work with him nearly as much.
@andrewaboy885211 ай бұрын
@@MakePopMusic I do recognize they werent so contradictory as they could have been, and appreciate you explaining some of your choices as far as saturation and eq curves are accounted for.

@makepopmusic Thanks for all your videos, honestly the best info out there!! I have a question.. I run a stereo group for the main vocal chain then route it to each individual mono signal.. @MakePopMusic11 ай бұрын
I don’t use any UAD stuff and I love FabFilter but it’s so hard to share presets using their plugins and I can’t really make a whole vocal mix out of only FF stuff. Waves is by far the most complete and accessible plugin company for us to make free presets for.
@Djmontanamtl11 ай бұрын
You can pop in your session UAD plugins Fabfilters and do the same chain. At the end they all do the same thing it’s just tone, processing and UI difference. And how easy is to share presets in this case.
@jnyce28311 ай бұрын
@@Djmontanamtl I agree. I love templates because of how convenient they are. But at the end of the day we should be teaching how to actually use these plugin and why we do the things we do. But he always does a great job of explaining himself in his videos so kudos to that. Maybe something like what is subtractive eq. Or carving out eq in the beat with mid side to make the vocals sit better in the mix. Or parallel compression and so on. I’ve learn a lot of different methods watching this channel. And I do t even do pop music.

Austin is the GOAT and his tutorials are so fire 🔥 but waves is really not worth anyones time or money in my opinion. They are kinda sketchy. I had so many waves plugins, like tons, then one day I upgraded and could never use them again. I called waves support line and they said that it was an intended feature and I would need to purchase all those plugins again. Like what?! I also want to add that I recognize lots of hit records have used waves plugins, Ryan Tedder even uses waves plugins and many people like their products. So if it works for you thats great but I just wanted to share my experience.
