The drawing, which we downloaded from GrabCad.com, poses a number of challenges. Specifically, it contains multiple joints between straight and cylindrical surfaces, as well as cylindrical and other cylindrical surfaces.
The tutorial begins with the solving of two geometry problems necessary to model this part, and then proceeds with the actual modeling, which is not a quick undertaking. We had to time-lapse some portions of the modeling process to prevent the video from being overly long.
To download the final result and the CAD drawing, go to www.otvinta.com/tutorial20.html.

This is how geometry should be taught in schools. An actual real world example of what you can get paid to do is a great motivator to learn.

It totally makes my day to see another 'how to' on gears - Blender by O.T.Vinta - these folks ROCK. Thanks!

The number of times you managed to pinpoint the perfect vertex to expand the selection of extraneous points in the “rounding” circles is amazing ! 😅

I would really appreciate it if you could please put together a series that shows how to construct a full mechanical model of any of your creations. These videos are great too, but it would be nice to see how to put together a full mechanical model on Blender. Thanks

Which model specifically?

@@OTVinta3d For example the Walking Gear Robot or Hypoid Drive model. It can be something really simple. It would be interesting to see how the joints work on Blender. I have some experience with Fusion 360, however I am curious as to how you create mechanical assemblies and joints on Blender. Thanks!

You can use math expressions inside value fields. Not just arithmetic ones (3*2, 10/5+4, etc...), but also the standard python math module funcs in its shorthand evaluation form (without the namespace math.x). I.e: log10(x), sqrt(x), pow(x, y), and so on.

amazing!! what method do you follow for soft curved objects such as car body parts? I'd love to see how you model such things

As much as I'm enjoying learning Blender (and poly modeling), I like this video, but I can do that entire peace in SolidWorks in less than 5 min. Btw, sorry you did all the math, but you have all measurements needed in the blueprint D:

I have a question, if your geometry is going to have tris and non quad polys anyways then why not just create this in cad software and import in Blender? What advantage are we getting spending so much time creating this in Blender?

Yes. As in my comment above: You can use math expressions inside value fields. And not just arithmetic ones (3*2, 10/5+4, etc...), but also the standard python math module funcs in its shorthand evaluation form (without the namespace math.x). I.e: log10(x), sqrt(x), pow(x, y), and so on

Your work is awesome! Do you create all your 3D models using Blender? Would you recommend using Blender to create mechanical parts and design robots to be 3D printed? Does anybody know if Blender can be used for this purpose?

I would say that Blender is good for sketching out a mechanical design. You can quickly generate a lot of geometry, which could represent your real parts and freely move them around. The final model should be created inside some CAD for dimension and geometry accuracy. CAD is just more precise and offer you mechanical mates, like concentricity of two cylinder part or tangency of two surfaces, which would take a lot more time to set up inside Blender. CAD also allows you to make drawings of your parts and assemblies. So yes, you can design mechanical parts and robots in Blender but it will be harder compared to making it in CAD (free: FreeCAD, Fusion 360, paid: SolidWorks, Inventor, Catia).
