Thanks for another good how to modeling video, though I thought you were pulling everyones chain (joking) about chinchilla dust. Didn't know it existed until I looked it up. I use kitty litter to stimulate small rocks. That static grass thing is one modeling tool I'll be buying as it makes grass look a lot more realistic. Lovely presentation and modelling skills. The hobby is so diverse in so many ways and your work is inspiring. Enjoying the series cheers. (When I listen to your voice it reminds me of Lucy Worsley of BBC History fame. I wonder if you're from the same area?) Thanks for the demo.
@KathyMillatt7 жыл бұрын
+RMLectronics East Yorks Thanks a lot! I think Lucy's accent is a little more Home Counties than mine but we went to the same University at a similar time although our paths didn't cross.
@waldenhouse7 жыл бұрын
Kathy Millatt Ah! I apologise for introducing a 'personal' comment but I do enjoy listening to accents (as well as the content!). It all started when I visited a place called Fort Steele in Canada where a chap who worked there could identify the areas of the UK visitors came from, by their accents - right down to their childhood. He was quite amazing. One thing he advised me was that, not only to listen to conversation but, wherever I could, listen carefully to the accent. It is quite remarkable yet disappearing fast as people travel a lot more than they ever did and the University issue means that many now 'adopt' an area and their accent begins to diminish. The strongest being Southern and Scottish (Mainland) as wherever these people move their accent stays the same, in most cases. Best wishes.
@KathyMillatt7 жыл бұрын
+RMLectronics East Yorks I think a lot of accents that fade with time come back when reading. You can hear my Mum's Welsh lilt when she's reading but it's much harder to pick up the rest of the time. It would be nice if people could get at least the country right, never mind the county! I sound nothing like an Australian or a South African but the average American will generally plump for those options before British. I'm not sure why. I can spot a Canadian from an American a lot of the time, especially if they say "ey"! Accents are merging as you say and that is a shame.

@KathyMillatt5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, that’s fascinating. I’ve tried moss etc but they’ve browned over the years despite preserving with glycerin. Maybe I needed to soak for longer. Other than that, it’s an area I need to look more at. I tried a paper punch but I’ve struggled to find them small enough for most scales. I did borrow a brother scanncut which was excellent in larger scales. Good luck with your grass etc.

Hi Kathy. This is a great tutorial 👍 How would you go about varying it to model the entrance to a farm field, the muddy area inside the gate which gradually blends into the field, where a Land Rover/trailer regularly comes and goes haphazardly, but isn't strictly a track? Also, for N gauge, would you dispense with the chinchilla dust as being too coarse and just use grout? (Try not to let your grout addition bias your viewpoint 😁) Thank you 🚂😊
@KathyMillatt2 жыл бұрын
I’d start with photos for the farm track and look to see where the ground is shiny, matte, light, dark and where the grass starts.
@KathyMillatt2 жыл бұрын
I’d definitely not do chinchilla dust for N, it’s far too large. Tile grout is a great alternative though 😁😁😁
@KathyMillatt2 жыл бұрын
On the track, I’d still use a tractor model or something similar to do the ruts.

Really helpful video. Couple of questions though. Why do you spray it with the isopropyl alcohol? Also where do you buy your grouting powder from? All I seem able to find is white.
@KathyMillatt7 жыл бұрын
+Karl Flavell the isopropyl alcohol helps the glue mixture to flow otherwise it just balls in the surface. You can get tile grout at most diy stores but I got my last lot on Amazon.
@karlflavell9687 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kathy. I'll try that with the alcohol as I've got a big bottle I use for restoring brushes (gets ancient acrylic out of them without disintegrating them lol). I just use the sheet stuff from Hobbycraft (UK hobby store) for foam board (the white card lined foam). The blue foam on this diorama is craft foam from here: www.panelsystems.co.uk/product/craftfoam-blue Not cheap! I use offcuts of insulation foam if I can find it but it's not that easy to find at certain points in the year and the Celotex brand does not cut with a hot knife and is really dusty when you use a normal knife. Hope that helps.

3:47 - Wait, a mix of isopropyl _and_ alcohol? Do you mean isopropanol (i.e., isopropyl alcohol) and ethanol (ethyl alcohol)? Both are alcohols. Isopropyl on its own is just a radical / hydrogen substituent.

Just misspoke, isopropyl alcohol and water, 1/3 to 2/3.

+t md Yep, the words don't always makes sense. IPA and water.
@tmd637 жыл бұрын
That makes more sense, thanks. I have used IPA + water before. It is excellent as long as the items to be clean are not water reactive (the stuff I was cleaning reactive violently with water but luckily was not something the public would have contact with).

It would. I tried leaves in one pool but the laser cut ones were hardly visible as they became much darker. It's all about building up the layers.

If you want to see them in person rather than KZbin then there are clinics you can attend that would help you. Where are you based?
