I have been looking for someone to do a really comprehensive tutorial on making a mold. Yours has been IMMENSELY helpful. I plan to start building props in the very near future, and I will be referring to these two parts often. Thank you so much!

I'm interested in the process of casting or pouring into your finished mold to get the final product.

watch my slush casting video, I explain both casting hollow parts and solid ones

How do you make a fiberglass shield? I have a wooden one (real one), but I would like to mold and make a fiberglass version because wood is heavy.
@digitalAuge10 жыл бұрын
would it also work with plaster bandages?

Very descriptive tutorial, very well made. There's a few things I did not quite understand though: What was the point of adding the "keys" on the silicone layers? Just for easier handling? When you want to actually cast something with your mold you basically just put the silicone layer into the fiber glass shell, screw them together and fill it up with your resin of choice, right?

Im pretty sure that the keys just help to make sure that the silicone is properly aligned with the fiberglass mold. Just in case it falls out or wiggles around.
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
sorry for the late reply! didnt see this comment! the keys are just to help align the silicone with the fiberglass shell and to prevent it from moving when you move the mold around. And to cast what you said was essentially correct yes :)

Late reply but appreciated! Yeah I figured the thought behind the keys out myself a few hours later.

Could you perhaps use aluminum tape instead of foil? I can't find spray adhesive easily in my area so i was wondering that.
@KRSprops7 жыл бұрын
that probably would work fine! you just want something as a barrier between the two layers so that they dont fuse together!
@dawidscheffler71527 жыл бұрын
have you used plaster bandages as alternative to the fibreglass? personally loathe working with fibreglass
@KRSprops7 жыл бұрын
I have yes, but it makes for a much heavier and more awkward mold to work with. Not to mention how brittle plaster can be, its a pain to work with fiberglass but its totally worth it for practicality

Awesome videos mate. Quick tip, bits where you are doing something that takes a few mines (i.e. the fibreglass cutting) speed up the video a bit (2,3x). Just makes it a bit more pleasant for the viewers. Not saying your vids suck or anything however, I am learning a lot! Cheers

What sort of rubber do you fill the molds with for the prop itself?
@KRSprops9 жыл бұрын
+Dragon1813 i dont use rubber! I use a polyurethane plastic to make hard plastic casts :)
@Dragon18139 жыл бұрын
KRSprops Interesting. Could you maybe do a video on casting?
@charmlighter10 жыл бұрын
KRSprops your gonna call me crazy but i use a tin opener you know the white chunky plastic handled ones with twist opener?? yeah those glide round the edges of the fiberglass like butter !!! much better than scissors you gotta try it :)

Can you use caating resin
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
yup! honestly you could use anything as long as it has a low enough viscosity! you could use chocolate!

Do you do any casting in resin?
@KRSprops8 жыл бұрын
Yep! thats exactly what these molds are used for! I use polyurethane resins
@shidorikuroko8 жыл бұрын
Nice! Do you have any videos of the casting process?
@KRSprops8 жыл бұрын
look through my videos! Ive done a video on slush casting which also shows casting into box molds, the box mold casting process is similar to what you would use with this type of mold

Just a tip for your video production, cut out all the tedious time wasted stuff such as the full process of cutting off the outside edges of the fiberglass casing. Just show the start of it with an explanation of what to do then cut to the finished process, just like you did with the aluminum foil. These things are not detrimental to understanding the whole process and can lead the viewer to lose interest or skip forward.
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
thanks for the tips, I'll take it into account next time I put up a video :)
