Cool !! Thanks for the cool tips of making the base for molding swords. I am gonna mold a sword next week. thanks

is it easy to mold from air dry clay a kitchen knife? i need for a movie prop. any advice?
@seraphim19610 жыл бұрын
Hi! Great tutorial! I am wondering (although am unsure if you can answer this via KZbin comments) how you would do this process with some more dimensional than a flat prop. For instance, if I create ram horns out of clay. The horns would have the iconic ram horn twist and bend in them, which puzzles me on how to make a mold for that.

If you don't have a prop (as in you're molding from scratch) would a possible drawing of what the prop would look like work as well?
@anon777x27 жыл бұрын
for long thin objects do you recommend vertical or horizontal casting? I've seen it done both ways. Just want some ideas of pros and cons before i try mine.
@KRSprops7 жыл бұрын
Honestly as long as you put in good air runners, either way will work fine. It really depends on shape of the piece as you dont want flat edges facing up as these can trap air bubbles easily. Because of that, it is most common for long thin items to be done vertically

Can you do this with something porous? I have foam batarangs that I'd like to make more of but I'm afraid the spongy exterior will not make or let the non stick spray not work.
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
Hi there, any porous material will need to first be sealed, this can be done in many ways, ranging from paint, gesso, pva glue etc. Before molding
@tofuninja548910 жыл бұрын
I see. Thank you for the response!
@tofuninja548910 жыл бұрын
Another question. Can you use something like plaster to make the mold? Silicone prices seem really expensive. Would you recommend plaster or is it something that just would not work?
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
tofuninja5489 depends on what you want to cast in, generally you want a hard mold material for a soft casting material and vice versa! you can try making a mold in latex but latex has significant shrinkage, you could also look up using silicone caulk to make molds as that is cheaper than the silicones you can get online for crafts but its also much lower quality in terms of tear strength, stretching and longevity
@tofuninja548910 жыл бұрын
Well I mean for the initial mold. Like how you use silicone for the "negative" mold (i think that's what you call it). I want to make a hard mold then fill the inside with a soft expanding foam. Would plaster be able to withstand the pressure of the expanding foam? Or would I have to use silicone because it can stand up ti it better?

What kind if silicone did you use? Is it as costly as smooth on?

I'm interested in mold making could I have a list of what materials you used and any tips for starting
@KRSprops9 жыл бұрын
ImRunningRiot thats exactly why i made these videos, if you watch this plus my jacket & box mold tutorials you should get enough knowledge to make your own molds! if you are in the USA try looking on smooth-on's website and if you are in the uk you can source material from TOMPS

Really interesting. Because i absolutely have no clue about molding or casting anything, i was wondering if it was possible to make a mold just out of clay. What do you say? Would it work aswell?
@KRSprops5 жыл бұрын
A hardened clay one that stays soft? For hardened, you can use a technique called 'investment casting'. For soft clay I feel like it would be impossible to remove the prop you are moulding without destroying said mould

Is there a way to make a mold for a sword with out using a base prop to mold around?
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
not that i know of, you cant really carve into silicone. you need the original weapon to make a mold of it
@12aqrz10 жыл бұрын
You could always make like a clay or plexiglass base and make your mold around that.

thanks, most of my molds were falling apart, splitting, etc. i just about gave up on it. based on this tutorial i'll try again and am confident i'll work the bugs out.

where did you get the prop from? i would like to make a mold of a cortana chip and halo legendary symbol but I don't have a prop.

i made them! you wont find these props anywhere that I know of to buy, and even if you could buy it from a prop maker they definately wouldnt be okay with you molding their work

what was the approximate cost of this mold? I know silicone and resin are both fairly expensive, and it seems a though you need a rather large amount for such a project.
@golem958 жыл бұрын
+RukiaFujioka to make a good long lasting mold, you will need a good amount of silicone. I probably used about 1kg of silicone for this and i pay around 10-12 GBP for that, then the resin and fibreglass is quite cheap as well at around maybe another 10gbp for the lot. Of course you would naturally buy larger than the quantities needed for a single mold so i am just quoting the proportion of the price of the materials needed for a mold

you have tips for making a skyrim logo mold with clay (im gonna use lead to fill it)
@KRSprops10 жыл бұрын
silicone can actually withstand very high temperatures, however it would mean you have to use something other than fiberglass for the mold shell as it would warp under heat. You could use ceramic to make a mold, look up a method called investment casting and you'll probably find your answers :)
@thundercombat10 жыл бұрын
but how to push in the form cuz i dont know how to do that (i dont have an electric saw and all)

try carving a rough draft of the prop or weapon you are working on out of insulation foam. every major hardware store sells large sheets for a few dollars.
