Use a hammer drill to drill holes in brick and drive concrete screws into brick to attach a 2x4 to concrete or brick wall. The Milwaukee rotary hammer kit: amzn.to/3qJpEiv, I may receive a commission if you click the link.

As a DYI homewoner I had not drilled into the bricks of my home, so was feeling apprehensive about to proceed to build and install a courtyard gate. Your video was very helpful. Thank you!

Thanks, I’ve angered a lot of things to wood but not anything else, this will help!

Best easiest cheapest way is to remember 16/16/16. Drill hole through wood, held in place with a 3/16th masonry bit, insert a piece of 16 gauge annealed wire ( also called tie wire, home Depot or Lowe's) 4 inch piece. Then drive a 16d common nail.

That is an easy formula to remember. I advocate something similar when you strip threads but still need the hole in the exact place, but I use a screw along with a wire: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoKTdoeCoa-teZY

@@toolsandrepairs yes you would drill the hole in the exact place, just as in the video. But at a fraction of the cost and you might even have all the materials already.

i am building a 10x20 lean to patio roof off concrete house 2x4 screwd to wall , 2x4 rafters with metal roof , would 1/4 or 3/8 inch tapcon be better every 18 inches ?

I'm not a structural engineer or even a carpenter so maybe someone else can answer, but if I was building that, a 2x4 ledger attached to the wall is way too small if I'm reading that right, and I'd use some wedge or sleeve anchors in addition to the threaded screws and I'd double them up vertically every 12 inches. A roof collapsing can cause injury or death so I highly recommend hiring a professional. Here is more info about ledgers on concrete walls: www.decks.com/how-to/articles/ledger-board-attachment-to-a-solid-concrete-foundation-wall

Perfect video. My only comment is that you really don’t need to use a hammer drill unless the hole you are drilling is very large. Otherwise a regular drill with a masonry bit works just fine.

Maybe my bits are too dull, but when I try to drill in brick without the hammer function even with small bits, it seems like it would take forever. If you have a good drill and new bits, it's definitely possible.

Why use a socket wrench? Why not use a drill bit?

I usually do, but it is very easy to over-tighten and strip the hole. Hand-tightening at the end eliminates that risk.

Tapcon is literally the worst choice here. They always snap off. And then you are screwed (pun intended)

Depends on what it is: a ledger board, yes you need something like large wedge anchors. Other cases, install tapcons at the right depth and install every 12 or 18 inches. Also use the larger screws for more strength
