Wow this is the first vid that was more direct abt how to put it together i have made a mount with my boyfriend that is of a wapiti spike and, i cut the plaque and carved out two oak leaves and an acorn on it. We drilled the skull directly onto the plaque and added a teeth hanger to the back which is what i prefer. I bought a whitetail rack off etsy and I’ve been struggling trying to mount them more traditionally and this vid was really direct about how to actually do it and do it well. Thanks so much

That was fantastic. Way to take the extra steps to really finish them off. I like the acorn shaped head piece that is finished off with some braided cordage. My youngest brother likes to do an antler mount with a picture, but he just wraps the skull plate. I shot my first branch antlered buck last year on the first day of the rifle season in West Virginia. A 17 in wide 6 point with a broken brow and tip on the opposite G2. I have a few new mounts to work on over the winter, so maybe I can go over that in more detail. Not sure when those videos will be done. I just add water till its a consistency that seems good to work. Personally I try to err on the side of too wet rather than to dry. It sets up quickly and if its too dry it will be hard to work before you get it all where you want it. I try to make one or two batches that fill in the bulk of the space, then do a final batch thats nice and creamy to smooth on and get it really nice. I like to use something flat like the back side of a butter knife. I also find that getting my fingers wet and rubbing the surface can smooth out the imperfections. You can also sand the surface once it is fully cured.

What were the silver buttons you used? Like that look and was hoping you were going to show that
@TheBudgetSportsman5 жыл бұрын
They are upholstery tacks. I like the look but I find that method much harder to do. Instead of wrapping the plaster and wood backing before mounting to your plaque, you would screw it to the plaque first. Then you would cover it with your leather using the upholstery tacks to hold it in place. There are a couple of difficult things with this method. First you don’t want to beat on the tacks with a hammer so you usually have to pre-drill. Second it can be hard to get them evenly spaced. Third, (this is a big one) it is very difficult to get an even edge all the way around. And finally (this is the biggest) it is often difficult to get all the wrinkles out. This is true with the method I showed in the video but it is easy to remove staples and readjust as necessary. Using the tack method it is harder to readjust once you have a hole through your leather. That being said, if you like the look then it’s probably worth the effort for a mount your proud of. If you have any questions feel free to message The Budget Sportsman on Facebook and I would be glad to share some more pictures and ideas of a few mounts I’ve done that way.

How do you do the one with the tacs or nails around the scull holding the leather I love that look. Like the one on the left side in your thumbnail
@TheBudgetSportsman4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. It is a cool look, but I quit doing it that way because it is much harder to accomplish. I'll explain it the best I can, assuming you watched the video. Instead of wrapping the leather around the plaster and backing plywood, you would actually screw that to your plaque first and then cover with leather. It is difficult because using the method I showed in the video, you can pull the staples out of the leather and reposition if needed to get all the wrinkles out of the leather. If you use the tacks, once you have a tack through the leather, you know have a hole. Sure you can keep the tack in the same whole, and just put it into the wood a different spot, but then you have a hard time keeping all of the spacing between tacks the same. If you like the look, then I am not trying to discourage you from doing it, you are just going to need to take your time and be patient. Also you will want to pre-drill the holes for the tacks. If not you will have to pound them in with the hammer, and will end up marking up your tacks. If you pre-drill you can use a soft rubber mallet, or cover your hammer with a piece of leather and then just softly tap them into place. Hope this helps.

@TheBudgetSportsman4 жыл бұрын
Usually we hide the ends behind one of the antler bases and just glue them down. Usually use hot glue to glue one end down which also holds the braid together. We use a small rubber band to hold the other end together while we work the braid around the mount. When you get all the way around, you can take the rubber band off, trim to length and glue the end down.

I do not. I made a few of my own, and had a guy with a CNC machine make some more, but he doesn't seem interested in making more of them.

Congrats on your first deer! I’m sure there will be many more. Thanks for watching. I would love if you let me know how your mounts turn out!

You had someone to help you when you screwed through the plaque into the mount. I found this really hard to do and keep the mount straight on the plaque, by myself.

Yes, my wife always helps with that part. I can see how that would be hard alone.

How did you clean the plaster off the base of the horns ?
@TheBudgetSportsman6 жыл бұрын
I usually use hot water and an old tooth brush. If it’s down in the cracks it might take several times if scrubbing. Really I probably should try taping off the base of the antlers before I plaster.
@Johnfor36 жыл бұрын
Tape them before you apply the plaster no clean up required.

I use leather boot laces for the finish trim, it's a lot cheaper and is the same thing.

Dose drywall putty work the same for the plaster
@TheBudgetSportsman2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know. I’ve never tried it. Here is my guess: drywall putty is normally spread on thin not as a big ball, it might take longer to dry.

No, the antlers are all natural.

Are you sure your template is 1/4 "? It looks like 1/2 to me.

I believe it may actually be 3/8”. It is definitely not 1/2

Great video!!! Have you ever tried to mount several sets to the same board? My wife got her third buck this year and I was thinking of mounting all 3 to a barn board or a piece of live edge... Do you have any advice??
@TheBudgetSportsman6 жыл бұрын
No, I have never tried doing that but I have thought about it. I’m too impatient to store up several bucks to do it that way. If I was going to do it I would probably use the exact same method of screwing them to the thin plywood, plastering them and covering them before attaching them to the barn wood. Then space them and screw then to the barn wood by what looks good. Personally I would use a leather covering and a twine or fibrous rope to finish off the edges. If you could find a piece of barbed wire and use that as on accent down the board snaking between your mounts I think it would just complete the whole thing. Just my thoughts...thanks for watching and commenting. If you get a chance, let me know how your completed project turns out.

where can I buy a mouting kit
@TheBudgetSportsman4 жыл бұрын
This is not a kit. This is something that I put together from pieces. If you’re interested in copying this, there are links in the description of the video for some of the materials you will need. I’m not a fan of pre-made kits but if you want to go that way there are many on amazon or outdoor sites like cabelas Here’s an example Walnut Hollow Country Deluxe Antler Mount Kit, Solid Pine Rustic Barn Board Finish www.amazon.com/dp/B01G2O99Y0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3fldFb7D392CF

What wood working tools Can you list them
@TheBudgetSportsman5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what plaque you are doing and what you have available. There are variety of ways you can accomplish the same thing. A jig saw is probably one of the most important for cutting out the shape. This could also be done with a scroll saw but will probably take longer. Also a router and/or router table is super helpful for making rounded or fancy edges. While not necessary a table saw can be useful for some straight cuts. If you don’t have one you can just use the jig saw. To make it look nice there will be a lot of sanding. An electric sander will make the process go faster but it can be done by hand. I also have another video that shows more of the process of making a plaque. You can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rX7dqqyclLeFe9U

What size are your templates?
@TheBudgetSportsman6 жыл бұрын
I have two plywood backer templates. The larger one is a bit over 4.25” at its widest point and 5.5” long. The smaller one is a bit under 4” wide and just over 5” long. They were never really precise measurements. I just eyeballed what I thought looked good. Usually once I cut the antlers off I’ll hold the up to the templates and see which one works best. You want the plywood to be wider the the skull plate and about as wide as the bases of the antlers.
