I followed your discussion intently, and when you said ,that you did "the whole move" by yourself with no human helpers , I nearly fell out of my chair! Wow! Ernie , YOU ARE THE MAN. The next time I watch one of your videos or read one of your articles in WJ I'll have a greater appreciation of just who you are. Great video. Thanks.

Ernie Thank you! I don't feel so frail anymore! I have to move my shop and all its contents approx 709miles and you've inspired me to give it a go even with osteoarthritis. Thinking it through like you suggest and having the right tools especially dollies I'm going to attempt the move myself now after your inspiration. Old guys rock! Thanks mate - from Western Australia!

I bought a used Jet 16/42 a few months ago about 400 lbs. Was amazed at how it breaks down and 2 people can sit the bed on the legs , about a two hour job overall. I also use a floor jack to reposition my lathe. Disassembly and resembling the lathe was a great introduction to my new lathe.

I jack up each end with small hydraulic jack and put movers dollies under each end. Works easily and not necessary to have two huge floor jacks.

Another option is Harbor Freight's 1,000 lb capacity lift table/cart. I position mine between the legs of my Powermatic 3520C and can easily lift and reposition the lathe. It's not a better solution than the ones shown in the video or suggested in the comments, but I find the lift cart useful for other purposes. For example, it makes it easier to get a large turning blank mounted on the lathe.

While I was younger I couldn`t afford to hire someone so it was ingenuity for heavy jobs

Impressive, The old use your head not your back methodology. I've used those hydraulic lift tables at work to move heavy instruments and they work great. The heaviest thing I had to get into the house by myself was my table saw and I just broke it down into as many parts as I could then rigged up a block and tackle in the floor joists to lift the saw onto it's legs. All my floor power tools are on wheels so I can relocate them as needed. I don't think I would have attempted something this heavy though. I had a 600 lb gun safe delivered and it took 2 big guys and something similar to what you used to get the bed up the stairs to get it into the basement. I never could have done it by myself.

There's no substitute for experience, that's what I always told the GM ASEP, (automotive service education program), students when they were working their shifts in the dealership. I told them to listen, watch, and learn from each tech they work with so one day they will hopefully be as good, (or better), than them.
