How To Move All Your Google Photos To Another Google Account

Update: Before filming this video, I tested this method multiple times, and it always worked perfectly fine. I was able to delete the photos from the original account, and they were still safe in the new account. And judging by most of the comments on this video, this has also been the case for most people who have tried it. However, I have now had a few comments from a few different people who said when they deleted the photos from the original account, the photos disappeared from the new account. I'm not sure if they did something incorrectly, or if there was some sort of glitch on their accounts or something. But if the photos end up deleted from both accounts, and you have emptied the trash, there will be nothing at all you can do to get them back, which would be very bad. So, before you do this, you may want to back up your photos using Google Takeout: takeout.google.com/ Or, try deleting one or two photos, and make sure they are still in the new account, before you delete all your photos, just to be safe.

I followed all instructions up to 8:00 on "Deleting Photos from Old Account (optional) but I don't see my new account adding up in terms of storage used, when I deleted some photos from my old account. The new account also didn't add up storage when I stopped partner sharing from the old account (to validate that all photos have indeed been saved to the new account). I am not confident that I can safely delete all photos from my old account if the new account is not adding up in storage. My goal is to transfer all photos permanently from my old to new account and not worrying about the existence of the old account.

It sounds like you've done everything correctly, so I would say you just need to wait a bit longer for the storage to calculate. Google can often take a while to update the storage usage when dealing with large amounts of files like this.

Hi! Thanks so much for this! I have been using my university google account (free unlimited storage) for years now. I use automatic back up and have many important photo albums. My university is now shutting down our accounts and I have to move all my photos to my personal account. I used your tutorial to move all my photos in my library. However, the albums have not been moved. How do I do that? I want to make sure I save all my photos before they are deleted.

All the photos in photo albums are also in your Google Photos library, so they will have been transferred across to the new account, they just won't be organised into albums. Unfortunately I think your only option would be to create the albums again and find the photos in your library and add them to the album again if you want to, which could be a fairly time consuming task. But you should still have all of the photos in your new account.

That should be fine, that message just means it will be deleted from the original account. However, as mentioned in the pinned comment above, despite all my testing, a few people have found when they delete the photos from the original account, they are removed from both accounts. I haven't found any explanation or solution for this, but it is quite rare, but just to be safe, I would recommend deleting one or two photos that you don't really care about first, to make sure they are still there in the new account, before you go ahead and delete everything else.

It's no different for videos, they will be transferred across along with the photos. Unfortunately, there is no proper way to check if all the photos have come across. I would just wait 24 - 48 hours to be safe, especially if you have a lot of photos. But if you scroll through the photos in the new account, and you can't see any major gaps in time where there are no photos, then you should be safe to disable partner sharing.

Sorry to hear that, this really shouldn't have happened if you followed all the steps correctly. The only hope will be if you still have the photos in the trash folder on the original account. As long as you haven't emptied the trash, you should have 30 days to retrieve them from the trash before they are completely gone forever. I'm really not sure why deleting the photos from the original account would delete them from the new account though. I've done this myself multiple times and that has never happened, and there are a lot of comments on this video from other people who've had no issues.

I have done this but only some photos have crossed over into my photos and when I look at what was shared I see very many that are not in my account now. Do i need to wait for all of them to appear becuase it looks like some came through and some didnt at random even though I said save all photos. If it's a lot of photos, you probably just need to wait quite a long time for them all to come across. There's a chance you will need to upgrade your account, but Google will send you several notifications when it starts to get full. So until you hear anything, it's pretty safe to assume you have enough storage space.

I set up a second account to save space cause my main one is already full and I have 13GB of pictures, when I did this to have them on a second account I only have 2.7GB of photos... they're thousands so I really don't know which ones are missing (I have it since 2014). Unfortunately, there's really nothing special you can do, other than scroll through them all, which with that many pictures probably isn't practical. But it probably just needs more time to process, Google can be very slow at processing large changes to storage.

I think you need to remove them from the bin in the first account. Because photos in the bin will still be taking up space in that account. And even after you remove them from the bin, it could take hours or even days for the storage to calculate in the new account. So don't worry if you don't see the storage change immediately.

Yes, pretty much. But you don't really need to turn off partner sharing, all you really need to do is delete the photos from the original account after saving them to the second account. Turning off partner sharing is really just for if you don't want to leave it on.

Not, really. But basically, if you use your phone's files app or gallery app to delete the photos, instead of using the Google Photos app to delete them, the photos should still remain on Google Photos.

I've never tried deleting an account after doing this, but assuming you've added the photos to the library of the new account as shown in the video, the photos should remain in the new account. This is what happens if you delete the photos from the original account, so I would assume it's the same if you delete the entire original account.

Saving automatically doesn't necessarily mean it's still working on it, it just means you have turned that setting on. Unfortunately, there's no definite way to check all your photos have been saved, but if it's been two days, you should be good to go. If you want to verify they've been saved, you could scroll through your photos in the new account, and just make sure it looks like they're all there. I know you can't really check each photo, but if there are no large gaps in time or anything, and it all looks about right, it'll be safe to assume they've all transferred across.

They won't take up space on the new account until they've been deleted from the original account. You need to delete them from the original account, then delete them from the trash on the original account, and then possibly wait a few hours to a few days for it to all process. Then they will start taking up space on the new account. But definitely don't do any of this if you have turned sharing back off, otherwise you will just be deleting your photos.

Yes, I would turn partner sharing back on, and make sure you have added all the photos to the library in the new account, and then it will be safe to delete the photos from the original account. Technically, after you've turned partner sharing off, the photos should still be in account 2 because they've been added to your library, but it's probably best to have partner sharing turned back on just to be safe. On another note, if you have 700GB of pictures, you'll want to make sure there is at least 700GB of storage space remaining on the new account, otherwise, you might run into trouble when all of the photos start to take up space on the new account.

Yes, the photos will not take up storage space in the new account until they have been removed from the old account. As long as you can see them all in the main photos area in the new account, you will be good to go. Just keep in mind after you delete the photos from the original account, it might take some time for the storage levels to update, so you might not see the storage useage increase immediately.

I transferred the photos successfully to the other account. Noticed one odd thing that seems to be a bug as I found out. Even tho I stopped the sharing between and deleted the photos from the old account, the storage in the new account still remains 0, but all the photos are there and saved. It's been a whole day now and it's still not filling up. Also I wanted now to start sharing the photos from the new account to the old account, just because I wanted to see them in the old accounts feed without them taking up the storage, but it is not working. The sharing is on, but the photos are not being shared, the app cannot see the photos when it comes to sharing. And I think these two bugs are connected somehow. If any of you have any solutions please tell me.

I've never tried deleting an account after doing this, but assuming you've added the photos to the library of the new account as shown in the video, the photos should remain in the new account as they are now just photos in the new account. This is what happens if you delete the photos from the original account, so I would assume it's the same if you delete the entire original account.

Update, to say I did as shown in the great video Tim, and I was one of the unfortunate ones where my photos did not properly transfer over to the new account. I even tried deleting from original account and it would delete from both accounts as well. In my case, even though the share was ended and even removed from the new account during Tim's process, my photos still did not show any storage in the new account. What I did was backup the photos in the old account, and it then forced all backups to the new account. Slowly they are backing up to the new account. Unfortunately they still do not switch over the easy way as Tim showed, but at least they did move now. I still would like to know why this did not work on my iphone and that may be the reason as google is mainly android driven I think. I bet all those who had transfer issues like Tim showed all had iphones. if so, would like to know. there may be a workaround, as it is much easier that way.

Yes, that is correct. You could archive photos after you add them to the album. Then they will be hidden from the main photos area.

Well this is a disappointment!! Paid the $1.99 to Google to increase my storage. Archived many many many photos in the last few days on my Pixel 8. Began taking photos a couple of days ago & took photos this morning...maybe between 12 & 20 of them. VERY surprised to see a warning on our computer that I am again in danger of using almost all of my storage (100 gig). From 15 to 100 gig and now I'm in danger of running out of storage???!!!!😡 How can this be??? I'm not doing anything wrong...this in now way could be considered a "sin"!!! Yes, in theory you can. As stated in the pinned comment above, there have been some people who have said this hasn't worked for them, and have unfortunately lost all their photos. But based on all my testing, you should be able to do that just fine. However, you may want to exercise caution, have a backup of all your photos first, or test out deleting a few photos you don't really care about, before you delete all the photos or the entire account.

I'm glad to hear it, thank you. The existing face recognition faces will not be transferred across, but after you give it a day or two to process, it should find all the same faces in the new account, so you would just need to go through and name each person again. Unfortunately, albums will not be transferred at all, so you would need to manually re-create each album and re add all of the photos into the albums. I barely use captions, so I'm not actually entirely sure what will happen there, but I'm pretty sure the captions would transfer across to the new account.

Hello. I've a edu account that'll be shut in some time. I've around 80 GBs of data in that account. I have shared all the photos of that account to my personal gmail account. I've two queries regarding this process: 1. I've turned on auto-save. It's slowly saving all the photos from my edu account to the personal account, but not saving videos yet. Does the Partner Sharing not auto-save videos? 2. After manually saving some media to my personal account, I deleted it permanently from the edu account. But the media is neither taking up any storage space in my personal account, nor getting deleted from the personal account. I'm afraid if I lose the data as it is strange that photos are not taking up any storage space and also not getting deleted when deleted from the edu account. Kindly explain why this is happening and if it's fine or will that cause my data loss.

I've had a lot of views from people with EDU accounts recently. Videos will all come across just like photos, if you're not seeing any videos appear yet, I would say it will start saving the videos after it finishes with the photos. When backing up photos and videos, it always backs up all the photos first, and then starts backing up all the videos, so it would make sense that this is what happens with partner sharing as well. So you'll just need to keep waiting until it all finishes transferring across. When you delete the photos from the EDU account, they will still be in the trash for the next 30 days, and while they are in there, they will still take up space on the EDU account, so will not count towards your new account storage. Once you delete the photos from trash in the EDU account, they should then start taking up space on the new account. It seems this can take quite a long time for the change to process, so don't panic if you see this warning immediately after removing the photos from the trash, it could still be a few more days before everything finishes processing.

I have tens of thousands of pictures and videos that I'm trying to move from one Google account to another one. I tried all the steps and it worked. The issue I'm having is that only the last 2-3 years of pictures I see on the new account but when I check again it seems to be adding new stuff slowly to new account. Yes, it can take quite a while with a lot of photos. 24 hours should almost be enough, but you might want to wait another 24 - 48 hours to make sure everything has definitely come across.

Yes, it can be done on the Google Photos website on a computer. Unfortunately I don't have a separate video for it, but it's pretty much the same process, some of the buttons might just be in slightly different positions.

That's strange, based on my testing it should transfer any photos on the account, regardless of where they came from. They don't all appear at once though, it might take some more time for the older ones to show up in the new account.

I encountered a challenge with backup account settings. Whenever I change the backup setting on the primary Google photos the destination backup account changes automatically. So having to the destination Google account backup photos shared becomes a challenge. Kindly assist.

Photos copied to my new Gmail account does not seem to take up space even after disabling Partner sharing. Whenever I change account storage for one account on my phone, the same applies to the other. It is like the account storage for photos cannot be set to individual Gmail account.

When I click on one of the shared photos (while in the 2nd account) and click on the triple dot in the right hand corner of the photo, then scroll down to "backed up" and it says "this item doesn't take up space in your account storage". My whole point to doing this is so I can delete the photos in the 1st account and keep a copy of them in the 2nd account, then delete them safely from the 1st account. I've been playing around with deleting photos in the 1st account to see if they disappear from the (shared with) 2nd account, just to check... so far, the 2nd account photos stay when deleting from 1st account. Which is what I want. But... if they aren't taking up space in the 2nd account... where ARE they taking up space once deleted from the 1st account? Sorry for the long-winded question and I hope it makes sense! Thanks for everything and keep up the good work!

Thanks for subscribing! After you delete the photos from the first account, and delete them from the trash in the first account, they will then start taking up space in the second account. Hope this helps.

Hi, there, Timmy! Good video and very clearly spoken! All good and instructive ! But what you (and many other video presenters in KZbin) have neglected to mention is - and most importantly - that the new second account that you need to create, must be made in another INCOGNITO Chrome browser page !! If you create a new account in a new tab of the same browser as your original account with your original log-in ID, then the "Auto Save" function will not appear in your new account Photos page , nor can you transfer your photos to this new account. You could only have a sharing function, of seeing the photos still in your original account and which cannot be saved in the new second account. Once Google knows that it is the same person creating multiple accounts, it will restrict your storage to the 15GB per person in the original parent account only! So for adding on an independent account with another 15GB of storage, you would need to use another computer or anogher incognito chrome page to create this new account, which Google cannot link with your original account. I could have saved a lot of time if this was emphasized and stressed upon in the beginning !! Thanks !

Sorry about that. I can honestly say I wasn't aware of any issue like this. I've had both the accounts I used for years, and I'm sure at some point I've been signed into both of them in the same instance of Chrome, and they are currently both signed in on my phone at the same time. So it sounds to me more like some sort of glitch than a hard rule put in place by Google. If they have deliberately tried to do that to prevent people doing this, they don't seem to have done a very good job of it.

I have 3 distinct Google account tabs running at the same time, and on the same single browser sign-in page. But when it comes to getting Storage in any of the accounts which are signed in from the same mother account, then it will not be possible to get separate 15 GB storages for them. You have to add the new accounts through a separate, unconnected and a fresh Chrome page, so as to get 15GB storages!!

Unfortunately, I don't think there's any proper way to find out. If you scroll through all your photos and there don't seem to be any large gaps in time that are missing, you are probably good to go. But that might not necessarily be practical with a lot of photos. So I would probably just wait two days or so to be safe, and then you should be quite safe to assume they've all transferred across.

Unfortunately, I can't find any way to do that, you can share albums, but you can't save shared albums. So the only option would be to transfer photos like this, and then manually add them into new albums.

You could try temporarily disabling partner sharing with your partner while you transfer the photos across. Then, once everything's transferred, you could turn off partner sharing with the new account and re-enable partner sharing with your partner. The other option would be to download all the photos to a computer, and then re-upload them to the new account, but that can be a rather slow process with a lot of photos.

Unfortunately I don't think there's any way to completely bring them all across. After a few days, it should automatically find all the faces and group them together. But you will then have to manually go through and name them all again, and you might have to merge a few duplicates of the same people and things like that.

Unfortunately I've never checked, but if you aren't seeing any change yet, I guess it takes a while to process. This is quite common when you are dealing with large amounts of files on Google storage. And I've just realised you probably need to remove the photos from trash in Google photos on the original account before they will take up space on the new account. They will still take up space on the original account until you remove them from trash, so that would make sense.
