I can confirm that to fly a cat from the US requires approval from the USA Department of Agriculture, and it's something like $450, and you have a ten day window to fly in. I just went through all last month when I flew to pick up my cat. Bringing her in cabin was 125 Euro's booking through Air France. As a word of warning, you have to take the cat out of the carrier and walk through the metal detector with the animal in your arms. Probably not a big deal for a dog, but out indoor only cat, wasn't thrilled about this. Airport security is scary and hectic enough, having to worry about your pants falling down because you handed over your belt, all your stuff going through the xray machine and the added complication of being clawed by a small cat.

I am bringing my cat to Germany. I don’t understand how it’s $450 as I don’t see that on the USDA website..

I took my cat out and suggest you have a harness on them, mine didn’t scratch or try to run he was just scared and held onto me. After they informed me that I didn’t actually need to take him out of his carrier, just request a private screening room and your pet can remain in their carrier.

This is timely and I appreciate it. I am about to move in March with my 3 year old Golden Retriever and I probably wasn't going to do anything but assume he doesn't need anything. I'll have to get him micro-chipped and update his rabies vaccination. Y'all are the best!

So adding info here if you are moving from Canada you can only get the Animal health certificate/passport endorsed by the Canada Food Inspection Agency and has to be maximum 10 days before travel.

Awesome video! I’m sure it will help many people with this struggle. Your pets may travel in the same plane as you with Lufthansa Cargo, despite of the name. They use Only-Cargo planes for bigger animals such as horses or cows. Dogs and cats (even short snout’s) travel in luggage area in passengers plane. The main difference is that your pet is handled all the time by Lufthansa crew, instead of being dispatched as a luggage, for safety reasons. Also, it’s very important to notice that they only forward shot snouts when the temperature is below 27°C. Both in origin and destination. So better avoid to move with your brachiocephalic during summer.

Hi Pedro! How are you? So question because I am really making crazy about come with my dogs. I have 2 frenchies and my biggest problem is they both are over the weight of 20lbs, they are around 25 lbs, so I can't take them in cabin! But I didn't know about Lufthansa cargo possibility that is not as the others airlines that they be send the dogs as a luggage 🤔, so it could be possible for me take my frenchie for this way safe?

Well, the Lufthansa Cargo flight for animals my friends dog made, did cost 1.5 more than the flight from New York to Frankfurt for her family of 3. It's very expensive.

Yes of course. The more select a choice the more one usually needs to pay. Owning a pet is never cheap. The dog owners we know rather paid the higher price than leaving their puppies behind.

Hey! thank you for the useful information that you post. I travel quite frequently on the ICE with my dog. It is true that you can´t buy a ticket online, they take only the paper tickets and you actually have to buy the one for "Hund" on the ticket machines. However, with the new DB app (Next DB Navigator, which I think it is still on the Beta version) you can buy the dog ticket there directly, but I can say that this is pretty new and not all DB personal is aware of this. I hope this is helpful. LG

Very good information! Pretty much the exact same requirements our pet courier service explained to us but here's a good news, some airlines allow small breeds inside their passenger planes as long as your furry friend doesn't exceed 8kg (including the soft carrier). We'll also be moving to Germany with our little furry friend and I would say all of the facts you said are all the things we also had to secure. Also might be good to add in, Titer Test (anti-body test) usually takes around 2-4 months so plan your trip ahead.

I also wanted to ask about how to pay in customs, we're coming from a different country and from your website guide, there's like a 140 euro fee. Can we pay it via Credit Card or we need to prepare cash for it?
@simplegermany
@simplegermany 2 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. We can't fully answer it, but pretty sure that credit cards are accepted. That's usually the norm for all point of sales at airports. We hope your upcoming move will go smoothly 😊

Seconding to make certain you leave sufficient time for the pet passport stuff - a lot of the time there’s a lot of waiting for paper snail mail back and forth involved, and mistakes often happen because it’s likely it’s the first time the vet’s ever filling it out. Make sure you proofread before sending it off to reduce headaches.

your pet needs to be at least 15 years old and wear an FFP2 mask instead of a muzzle 🙂 Thanks for the great summary. The beauty of e.g. having a dog in Germany, the dog is allowed in most restaurants, the waiter may even bring a bowl of water on warm days and a dog is pretty much socialized into our society. It is very different from what I have experienced with my dog in the US, where she was shocked how many mean and aggressive dogs you can find on more or less official "dog playgrounds". What I experienced there in just a few weeks was was bad and never happened in Germany. Maybe I have been in a republican district, where dogs just mimicked their owners?🙂 Anyway, I am sure your experience will be great and your dog will be a very happy one to have so much more freedom and be included.

Hallo. I am wanting to travel to Düsseldorf from the U.S. for a two week stay, with my cat. So, it looks like the 10 day window for the U.S. Dept of Agriculture pet health certificate is required for entry into Germany. But what about the return flight two weeks later from Düsseldorf to the U.S.? What is the requirement for that, please? Does anybody know?? Thank you. This is a wonderful and informative video. Thank you for posting it.
