Gayle taught how to prepare for Product Manager interviews, what top companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft really look for, and how to tackle the toughest problems.
She also discussed how the ambiguously-named "PM" (product manager / program manager) role varies across companies, what experience you need, how to make your existing experience translate, what a great PM resume and cover letter look like, and finally, how to master the PM interview questions (estimation questions, behavioral questions, case questions, product questions, technical questions, and the super important "pitch").
Gayle McDowell is the Founder and CEO of CareerCup and the author of Cracking the Coding Interview, Cracking the Coding Interview and Cracking the Tech Career.
Gayle has worked as a Software Engineer for Google, Microsoft and Apple and has extensive interviewing experience on both sides of the table. She has interviewed and received offers from Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, IBM, Goldman Sachs and a variety of other firms, and she has interviewed over 120 candidates at Google and served on its hiring committee.

The last bit about answering the What Is Your Favorite Product question definitely got me thinking. I am crystal clear on what my favorite product is and the reasons why, but framing the response to include the angle Gayle describes will no doubt help present the answer in a more impactful way.

She handled those iMessage prompts like a pro. So, so rude to keep your phone on and not silenced during sessions like this. Or... like.. ever. Silence your phones people!!!

A great presentation full of excellent tips to prepare for the PM interview! My only critisism is, as someone coming from 17 years of UX work into PM, I was totally insulted that she considers UX work as "drawing pretty pictures". I get that she was trying to illustrate a point about potential stereotypes, but her choice of words was just wrong.

Give the section at 10:35 another listen. This clearly isn't what she considers UX to be. This was her summation of what an interviewer would think if you told them your hobby was being an artist, you spent time as a UI designer, and you've built a product that is visually stunning but doesn't have a lot of users. The interviewer will think, "You can draw pretty pictures, but can you make data-driven decisions?" It sounds more like an estimation of the artist part of the background rather than a summation of what UX designers do.

It seems that it is just a complement to Cracking the Coding Interview without deep understanding and insights into the PM realm. 2/3 of the presentation is about generic stuff. PM part starting from the 'don't forget user' statement, yeah extremely insightful besides the fact that it is a foundation of this role. Jumping from one to another topic looks like this deck was taken from another event and even was not prepared for an appropriate timeline.

What's the driving force behind joining Amazon? Stop really with all this passion bs. No one cares. All for-profit company cares are skillsets, education, talent and calibre. Era of Steve Job is over, we are now just a cog in the wheel now.
