Thank you for having Ramit on and spreading this information. So many people, such as my peers that are in their 20’s and 30’s, still think a home is an investment and will make them “successful”. If those that can afford it and need a big house for a family, that’s their choice and they should go for it. But for those that do not run the numbers of the phantom costs and want a 15-30 year mortgage, I say that’s a no go… My parents still rent their place in Colorado, and they do much better than the average American. They had the big houses and they tell me it’s not worth it anymore. Easier to rent because they are older and don’t have to worry too much about maintenance or lawn care lol

As a life long renter who, like you, Ramit, has lived in expensive areas (NYC, SF), I agree with you about the myths of renting vs. buying. Thank you for putting it out there! But when is rent too high, and what are the alternatives to living where you want to live within a reasonable price vs moving for affordability?

So I co-lead an Employee Resource Group at work for Early Career Professionals and we were all talking about this the other day. We keep feeling like no matter how hard we work, how much we monetize our hobbies, or how many side hustles we have, we just continue to struggle to pay bills. I felt better knowing its not just me, but at the same time I hate seeing my friends struggle too. I read Ramit's book and it helped me support my husband and I and our two dogs through his 9 months of unemployment and now that he has a job, his hours (and pay) are less than we hoped. I am SO tired of living paycheck to paycheck. We want to move forward with our lives but this leasing situation is getting out of hand. I haggled over the phone the other day (after not having water in our kitchens for the last week) and got $100 off for us and our neighbors, but it feels like it was barely a dent. When and how do you make the decision to jump ship if you don't have a nest egg left to fall back on???
