However, after watching this, I realize that I should be asking for much more as that was simply their range. In essence, play their game, win their prizes. Thank you Ramit for the ammo going into this week for round 2 of meetings and more negotiations I can only imagine. Cheers! - Kyler

There is something called "The Ultimatum Game". If two people share the spoils of a joint venture, and the stronger, bigger guy offers his smaller, punier partner mere scraps with a "take it or leave it" ultimatum, we'd expect that the puny partner would take what is offered because he can't stand up to the bully. But in real life, it's seen that even people in a very weak negotiating position refuse offers that insultingly low. This is a hangover from the Stone Age when you had to fight for every scrap of meat with other members of your horde. If you didn't stand up to the big bully you'd likely die of hunger. If you stood up, you'd probably take a few hard punches but next time the bully will think twice before trying to cheat you out of a fair deal. As a result, in most collaborative situations, people actually make fair offers to their partners.
Thank you. I value your expertise on salary negotiations.

How can you be a top performer and what exactly defines a top performer? In sales or business this is probably easier defined as someone whose made more in sales, but how about in other fields, such as Tech?
@miryamishot6 жыл бұрын
I think in my opinion, a top performer is someone who always gets the job done, someone who’s always on time, someone who is always dedicated to finishing the job, someone who has a great relationship with most of the company employees, someone who has a great attitude while doing the job, even though people say who cares have a bad attitude and get the job done, that’s not always true, having a great attitude while doing your job really helps others around you because it gets everyone pumped and ready to go onto the next project. That’s my opinion.

Don’t do this. Instead, try to understand the mechanics your manager operates within, and get her support in working through the channels. Find out what your compensation ratio is. That’s where you fall on the pay scale range for your position. Set a goal to move aggressively if you’re on the low end of that range. If you’re already near the target compa ratio, your plan must be setting milestones for getting a promotion. Your manager can’t just give you more money, but she can be your ally in working the system. If you go in saying “I want more money”, it will annoy her. She can allocate more budget during annual planning for increases, bonuses, or equity. But an out of cycle request for money because you googled it makes you look like a tool. Make sure she knows you want to be paid for performance. Set goals. If you’re actually a high performer, she would have brought this up by now. If you feel under paid, you’re probably failing to demonstrate your value. Fix that disconnect and the money will follow without Glassdoor stats.

Your boss could say well those numbers from Glassdoor, etc. aren't accurate and you are being paid a fair amount for your job. Then you can't do anything because you don't have enough real data from employees that work there to back up your argument. A lot of the times it's better to find a new job that has a much higher salary than try to ask for a raise of a few thousand if you care about getting more money.
@asadb19904 жыл бұрын

Hi. I need prompt advise. I had my performance review last week and got very positive feedback. At the end of the meeting I was offered 53K (said by HR). I took a moment of silence and boss (CEO) asked what I thought. I said 55K and he said okay. Now I’m wishing I asked for more. My position is currently hiring and the starting is from 50K. They recently changed it. When I started last year the starting was posted from 45K. They offered me 45K and I negotiated to 48K. So, is my calculation correct? With their 5K increase in budget my raise is only 2K (considering inflation, that’s nothing). Is there any action I can take now?
