for anyone wondering if this would help you in an acid attack situation... NO. DO NOT POUR BAKING SODA ON YOURSELF. in the instant the baking soda reacts with the acid, the level of heat spikes significantly, causing further burn injuries. not only that, but at it fizzes and splutters, it spreads the acid to other areas of your body that might have remained unharmed. if you are in an acid attack, follow guidelines and rinse with cool, clean water for at least 15 mins and consult an expert before applying a base like bicarbonate of soda.

Maple Leaf - Apparently you are from Britain where they have acid attacks. I could be wrong, but I wonder if you could use baking soda mixed with water, instead of just the powder? When I put the baking soda powder on my car battery posts to clean them, it fizzles and splutters, but when I mix the soda with water and then pour it on to the post, it doesn't do this. It neutralizes the acid without the fizzle.

@@guncontrolisusingbothhands2331 it may or may not fizzle, but the neutralisation reaction is exothermic, meaning that as the acid is neutralised it generates heat. depending on the ph balance of the acid, this can range from hot to extremely hot. as any burn victim knows, the last thing you want to apply to a burn wound is more heat. the important thing is to wash off as much acid with clean water and as quickly as possible. when the excess acid has been washed off, the burn itself can be treated with bicarbonate of soda, as the trace amounts of acidity remaining in the tissue will be less damaging. but it isnt a good idea to just douse acid with base when a person is still contaminated. nor is it a good idea to apply bicarb or any other base to an open wound (2nd and 3rd degree burns) as this can cause further complications. therefore the best advice rather than to waste time wondering when/if to apply base, you should continuously rinse the area and seek emergency medical attention. its a lot faster, and theres less chance to make an awful mistake and potentially make a situation worse for the victim.
