Interesting, did you post any examples? It's important to remind everyone that GoPros are not DSLRs. All the material in my video was shot with a Hero 4 Silver, I have not tested the Black. Did you check your test shots on a nice computer screen? Often the images look brighter and grainier on the small LCD. +Getawaymoments No haven't posted anything was just tryin out a few edits on Lightroom. I was editing the time lapse on my iMac, it's more than likely cuz I didn't use ISO at 800, just didn't look great on my iPhone on the night. Sure it's trial and error in the end hehe
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Duffy The idea is usually to use the longest exposure at the lowest ISO to get the image you want. 800 is a little dirty, not perfect for stars, but you can do it.

hello; i have also had good luck using 10, 15 and 20 sec shutter (iso800) when the moon is out and shining bright. i like that option as it gives a higher number of pix = good for TL. but on really dark nights with no moon, 30 on the shutter is the way to go. i have not tried fiddling with the WB but now that i see what you did, i'll give it a try. so, thanks for your movie, good info! fsb
@Getawaymoments10 жыл бұрын
One thing to keep in mind, using a longer shutter and lower ISO is easier on the camera. Higher ISOs make the chips work harder, so I would rather have fewer cleaner frames and save a little battery power. But you are right, more frames = better time-lapse. Try 30 second and lower ISO one time and see if you see a difference. Thanks for watching!
@ErwinRz6 жыл бұрын
great video! I just watched it and I will try it. But is it different 30 seconds shutter speed on night laps and 30 seconds interval on timelaps? I'm new in gopro. Thanks
@Getawaymoments6 жыл бұрын
Erwin Rz In night-lapse you can have long shutter shots up to 30 seconds. In regular time-lapse the max is 2 seconds and it's automatic. Don't confuse shutter speed with interval. Interval is the time between shots. Shutter speed is the length of the shot. At night when it's dark you need a longer shutter speed .... for stars and light painting. If you use nightlapse during the day all you would get is over exposed white frames. Understand? Go shoot some and hit me with questions as they arise.
@ErwinRz6 жыл бұрын

It will be tiny in the frame, but try nightlapse mode if you have a Hero4. Protune on, ISO 100, shutter 20 or 30 seconds, Interval continuous. This will create still photos, pick the best or combine them in Gopro Studio to make a timelapse.

Hi mate, lovely work! Quick question when ever i shoot Nightlapses with my GoPro Hero 4 Black everything work great but my photos are square, all the other videos i see are widescreen like yours, do you know why this is ? Final Cut Pro X tells me the resolution is 4000 x 3000! Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Locky.
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
We all adjust the square photos to fit the 16x9 frame. You are correct, the photos created by the Hero4 are square 4x3. I use Avid, and when you import the photos into a video project you can stretch the images to fit a 16x9 project. You can also crop a 1080 frame out of the square frames but you will loose the top or bottom of your shots. I have found that the wide angle of the GoPro image looks OK when you stretch it to 16x9. However there are some other tools to do the job, I know GoPro Studio gives you the option to stretch 4x3 to 16x9. I do not know how to do it on final cut 10, If you import the images to sequence in a 16x9 project it should adjust to fit or there is an option in the menus to do so. Another important thing to understand is that the images are big enough to create a 4K project if you like, or if your doing a 1080 project you can zoom or pan within the images without loosing quality...... to a point. Hope this helps.

Question 1: When shutter speed is 30 seconds and interval is continuous, does it mean you get 2 frames per minute? Question 2: Is there a way to run GoPro on continuous power? (I assume you need to keep it running for more than a few hours to get a decent length of video)
@Getawaymoments10 жыл бұрын
1: Yes, about two frames a minute. So, for a 30fps project, you get 4 seconds per hour. 2: Yes, you can use a USB power supply. I use a battery backpack so it more then doubles the shoot time to about 4 to 5 hours. If you use the backpack you can leave the camera in it's case safe from overnight rain or dew.

I had this problem myself (Hero4 Silver) and fixed it with a factory reset. You will need to contact GoPro for instructions on how to do that. First try reformatting your card and do a camera reset. If that does not work you will need to contact GoPro. Also are you on the latest firmware? Unfortunately I don't have a how to on the factory reset, they may want you to send it in. Sorry I don't have a better answer.

thank you for Your videos and Your tips, but i have to ask You a little question...why do You use a continuous interval ? Thank You in advance Paolo
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
Paolo Grilli I only use the continuous interval when shooting nightlapse. That is because the exposures are much longer so you need to continuously shoot to get enough frames to make a time-lapse. For normal daytime time-lapse I usually shoot 1 frame every 2 seconds. That is 30 frames a minute, 1800 frames an hour = 1 minute of timelapse. Now if you are shooting a nightlapse at 1 frame every 30 seconds ie a 30 second exposure continuous interval then you are shooting 2 frames a minute or 120 frames an hour = 4 seconds of video. Understand? Using a long interval with a long exposure would make a crappy astro timelapse. Try it both ways and you will see. Good luck shooting!

HI thanks the the detailed tutorial. However, if I want to do a sunrise or sunset timelapse, how to i prevent the sunrise being overexposed and vice versa as the setting would already have the exposure time of say 2 or 5 seconds?
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
The only way to do a sunrise or sunset nightlapse is to set the camera to auto for the shutter. Unfortunately the longer shutter speeds are locked to the setting so you will get overexposed frames. In the "auto" shutter setting the high end of the shutter is limited to 2 seconds I think, so if you want to do the longer shutter times you can not do a sunrise or sunset at present time the way the camera is configured.

Battery life with all cameras is a hard question, it really depends on what your doing with them. But, a new Hero4 battery will get you 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Time-lapse on the longer end, shooting 4K probably shorter cause the camera is working much harder. If you are going to be riding all day I would get a few spares and one of those new cool dual chargers or a battery backpack. I got one of those this summer and really like it. Good luck on your ride and be safe!

You use nightlapse mode and auto exposure. Unfortunately at this time the longest shutter time in auto is 2 seconds. If you want to shoot stars you need the longer shutter speeds 15 -30 seconds, you have to manually set the camera and that will prevent you from getting day to night change. Sorry.
@duranseymour9 жыл бұрын
Hi, after your finished shooting, how do you prepare all the photos for viewing? Speeding them up ? etc
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
Duran Seymour After I shoot I usually import all the still photos into my video editor and make changes if necessary from there. I rarely pre-edit the photos before import. Many high end shooters who specialize in time-lapse especially HDR time-lapses, batch edit and process their stills before they import them into a video clip for editing the final product. This is usually done with DSLR stills, at this time there I find that with GoPro time-lapses I can make all my necessary adjustments on the video side. Now if one day GoPro offers an HDR feature this will change. As far as speed? That is really a function of how many still photos you shoot and at what interval. As a rule, if you want smooth time-lapses shoot more stills then you think you will need, you can always speed up a time-lapse without quality loss, but slowing a time-lapse down usually looks like crap.

Patrick Guerrisi First the backpack does not work on the Hero6 ..... I use a USB power booster (for my Hero5) you would use for a phone, it works for about four hours. About color, I often use 3000k as my setting it gives the night sky a blue tint. In reality the night sky is sun lit so it really should be 5600k or native. It's a personal taste question. Hi I'm using a phantom 2 gopro 4 and I really want to shoot some amazing night photo. With lighted location. Can u help me by putting the best settings in the gopro? Thank u.
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
patrickhagot Interesting question. In night photography there is a simple question of shutter speed. Long exposures require a tripod or a stable mount. Short exposures require a higher ISO which will lead to grainier photo/video. Unless you can make the Phantom perfectly still you will have to go with high ISOs and deal with a noisier photo/video. Either way you will need to do some tests. Try "night" photo mode set ISO to 800, set shutter to auto. I would love to see how the long exposure would look flying at a slow steady pace over light installation. Good luck! send me a link if you get something great.

Great info, thanks! I tried the night lapse after watching this video, the shots came out a bit white, I will play around with it more. However I seem to have a problem. I have the hero4 silver, when I try to playback my night laps video, it does not seem to go in full speed like the shots I see in this video. And when I hook up my gopro to my computer, there is NOT one night lapse video file, instead there are about 300 individual picture files that I can look at. This does not seem right to me at all? What am I doing wrong?
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
A couple things. NightLapse mode shoots still photos not video. When you play it back in the camera you get an approximate idea of what the nightlapse will look like. To create the nightlapse you need to assemble it into a video clip using editing software or GoPro's Studio. It sounds like your first attempt was over exposed, drop the ISO or shutter speed down until you get a properly exposed shot ...... the nightlapse again.

When made nightlapse with a moon at night, the moon has a straight line of light goingn through it.. İ use no filter . How to shoot without that flare?
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
With a Gopro the only thing you can do is clean your lens and housing glass. Flares are usually caused by the quality of the lens or sensor.

How are you swiping through the case? lol My GoPro screen doesn’t pick mine up through it. Also, should I not turn on protune if I don’t have access to a computer for post-production? Great video, huge thanks for this help!

The Hero4s cam with two backdoors, a hard case door and a door with flexible film .... it's not great but it works. If that's not the problem is the screen locked?
@Getawaymoments5 жыл бұрын
Protune is all about manually settings not post production necessarily..... so yes you need to use protune to get these kinds of shots. But you will need an editing solution to assemble the still photos into a video clip.

in my country there arent many stars and when i'm doing night lapse the stars doesn't appear in the video
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
What country do you live in that does not have stars? There are stars everywhere, you might not be able to see them because of light pollution. Did you use a thirty second exposure?

I need some tips from the specialists. next month I'm planning to make a trip to some nice places, and have the intention to capture timelapses from dusk till down (moon may or may not be vissible). due to the difference of brightness, how do you suggest me to set the cammera? btw, I have the hero4 silver with the latest update which captures timelapse videos. hope to read! thanks
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
If you want to get really nice nightlapse shots you do not want to use the "video" time-lapse. To get the really cool night shots you need to use nightlapse mode, which shoots longer exposure still photos that are mixed together to create a moving nightlapse. You can use the "video" timelapse mode to shoot sunsets and sunrises, but unfortunately one mode does not work well for all the shooting situations you describe. If you watch my videos you will see the really cool star shots sometimes end with it fading to white .... overexposure. That is because you cannot use the auto setting for stars

If you want great shots on vacation, I recommend shooting as much as you can now. If you have specific questions, just post them here.

how can there be enough power on the battery for such a long nightlapse setting?
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
You can use a battery backpack like I did in these videos, which gives you about four to five hours of shooting in night lapse. You can also plug the camera into AC/DC power using a usb power.

The new Hero4's are a true step up in many ways, new inside components, new user interface. Sorry but the advances in cameras the last ten years have been amazing and trust me I have several dust collectors that I paid big money for that are now obsolete. The Hero3s are good cameras, I use them at work everyday. So start saving your money!!!! :)= Thanks for watching.

Do you suggest turning on the spot meter for night lapse of the supermoon eclipse tonight?

No, it could go either way. best to test it pick your favorite setting. This is the one time spot meter may be the right choice.

Nice video, why do you suggest setting colour balance to 'Native'?
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
Because that is the base setting coming out of the camera. I like using 3000K, it makes most of the foreground objects at night look right, but it puts a blue cast on the sky. Native is basically the auto output of the camera. Stars are sunlit objects so shooting native night lapse the sky will look muted or warm not blue. Many like to shoot stars at 5500 or 6500 for this reason, and the moon should really be shot with these for correct color. Its a personal choice, which do you like warm or blue?
@ChrisUK279 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I've tried with 3000k will try other suggestions to see what works!

Protune, when edited, looks so much better than the actual default go pro settings. could you make a video on explanation of protune and how to edit a footage with protune enabled? I know there are lots of videos out there but i seem to understand you the best :))! Thanks
@Getawaymoments10 жыл бұрын
I will add it to a very long to do list :)= GoPro's auto settings are very good so don't be afraid to use them. There are very specific times and uses were protune is a must, but most people will never use it. I will think on it, until then keep shooting, the best way to learn is experimentation.

good day, is it possible to have time lapse with the fire works during new years eve??? what settings should i set with my hero4 black... thanks
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I have been planning on doing the same. First shoot night-lapse mode, you want the lowest ISO, so 100, interval continuous. Then you want the shortest possible shutter time that will look good, if your going to make a time-lapse out of it. So I will start with 2 second shutter, then check the results, adjust from there. If you are just shooting for good still frames you may want a longer exposure time. Good luck! send me a link if you get something great, I will post here if I get some good material.
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
Claire Farron Don't be overwhelmed. There is plenty of help on the web and KZbin! ISO simply refers to the light sensitivity of the camera, the higher the number the more sensitive, but you get more noise. The lower the number the cleaner the image but it is not as sensitive. So on a sunny day use a low number, in a dark setting you want a high number. In long exposure photography, like this video is talking about, you want a small number. To learn, ask questions. Shoot, shoot shoot. That is how you will learn. Check out GoPros Tutorial channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn2rZn-efM-FgsU

Is the final video ready inside the gopro cámera or do i need any postprocess to make the final video?? ... how it works that point? ... thku
@Getawaymoments3 жыл бұрын
With the older Gopros nightlapse only created stills, so you have to edit them together to create the timelapse. The new Gopros have nightlapse video which creates a video clip. The nice thing about the older models is you get cool stills ..... but video is quick and easy to share.

What settings would you recommend for recording a nightlapse in a dark marina with a clear sky and the moon? I would like to record the marina, not the sky :)
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
TheRafojak It all depends how dark it really is. I would try ISO100, continuous interval start at 15 second exposures. Shoot for a few minutes and check. If the shots are overexposed make the exposure shorter. If the test shots are dark, try 20 or 30 seconds.

Which settings would you use on the gopro4 silver to record a movie or to make a nightlapse during the approach from the cockpit of a plane? Thanks!
@Getawaymoments9 жыл бұрын
***** You could just use video time-lapse all auto 4K setting, it would look OK. But the really cool shot would be to shoot night lapse stills with ISO 100, shutter set to 15 seconds or so. You will have to do some tests. Results will depend on how bright the inside of the plane is, how bright the out doors .... ie city or country. Good luck! I want to see your results .... this could be very cool. Check out this one for ideas. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5aaoHmLjK-KhKM I would test also with the camera behind the pilot so we can see the dashboard.
