talent is a result of hard work, nobody starts amazing at anything like even with music nobody's born playing a guitar you have to practice to have any 'talent'

Jory My reply is normally ether "I have TALENT!?SHEEEET!" or "I don't believe in talent." I always worked to get where I am and still have a long way to go. I am not as fast as others but I wouldn't get where I am if I didn't struggle.

+Jory I agree. Seriously, if someone were to spend 30 years mastering to play piano, it would be so degrading to hear "What an amazing *gift from god*" Like thanks for discrediting 30 years of hard work!

nah man, if you got it from birth it's talent. If you got it from hard work it's skill. That's like saying "being born is a gift", when it's not. Not when being born brings you into a whole world of pain that you never would've experienced having never existed in the first place.
@James-ix5yj

:D Take this example: I've had a natural talent with music in general. When I started playing the piano, I learned fast. However, by itself it wouldn't have amounted to much if I hadn't then spent the next 11 years learning and refining my ass off with theory lessons, piano lessons, and more. I'm still called 'talented', btw. It pisses me off. Because I worked for my entire life (started when I was 7, so I'm 18 now) to get where I am. I can't remember when I haven't been able to play the piano.

For anyone who has been told, 'not good enough," at any time in your life, I have a method for you. Turn the feelings of 'not being good enough' to 'not practising enough', because that motivates you. It motivates you to move on, and be who you are! If you believe your good enough, others will too. Don't be arrogant, and don't tell others the words, 'not good enough'. What do you want to get out of what you've been told you're 'not good enough' at? If it's to have fun... Have fun! If it's to get a career, use that as motivation and don't stop practising and doing what you love. I want to be a singer, and get rich. Now, you may be thinking that I'm shallow, but I'm not. When I have enough money to pay off the debt my parents are in, I'll give it to them. I'll give it to them as a parting gift before disowning them. I don't like how my parents insult me, then say 'we don't insult each other in this family' when me and my brother are fighting! I want to be richer than you can imagine, and share that with everyone! Find people's operations, donate to the poor, give hope to the homeless, and help in every way that I can! I watch people like Jazza, because that's what they love to do! They're happy, and watching them do what they do makes *me* happy! I want you to never give up, no matter what, and let those people who say 'not good enough' fuel you to keep going!

so an artist must suffer and be poor but at the same time has to use expensive equipment and visit the best art schools. probably that's why they're poor heh. the most expensive thing i needed for my art was my graphic tablet and everything i know about anatomy and drawing now was pretty much self-taught, so no art school needed so far.

All through out elementary school most of my teachers made fun of me or got mad of me for doodling on my home word or notes. Even my elementary school art teacher hated that I drew cartoons and not still life and other stuff. Once I was done with my project early and I was free drawing like my friends where doing too but she only targeted me and showed my picture to the class and ripped it. I cried.. everyone laughed at me except a few friends but we where to shy to stand up for ourselves. I'm 5th grade(the last year of elementary school) my math teacher always completed my doodles on my homework and my drawings in my binder, she helped my self confidence and I became so much more social and confident! I stood up to my art teacher one day and she stopped picking on my and my friends but still gave me harsh grades.. now that I'm in 6th grade (middle school) my art teacher is so supportive to all students and gives us tips based on our own style!

they aren't really 'fine art' because they are made with entirely different intentions, though I really do consider some anime and manga to be superior to a chunk of fine art in terms of impact it has made. Some fine artists will dismiss it though,but not all of them. Artists are so different, and especially with this generation- a lot of fine artists are influenced by all sorts of cartoons, including anime. Again, it is art, but I'm not sure I would call it 'fine art' though fine art has been working at tearing down the boundaries between high and low for a long time.

Beskt It's annoying because your sketch book is full of things that you don't know why da hell you put in there, and it's also full of mistakes. As an artist, you don't want to show those to just anybody, and attempting to draw something you've never drawn before in front of a person breathing down your back is kind of stressful, because you don't want them to see you screw up.

I've been watching a ton of Jazza's videos, and KZbin keeps recommending this one to me. I've been avoiding watching it because I guessed that it was probably one of those "top 10 things not to do" kind of videos. I've found that don't-do-this things are kind of detrimental to my morale, so I avoid them when I'm not feeling strong enough to withstand that. Finally talked myself into watching this, and I'm really glad. A lot of stuff I needed to hear. Thanks, Jazza. Think I'll go write (my creative outlet) a bit.

Things that happen at my school 1) When they see the style I draw with they say, "Oh so you like drawing anime?" -I will not type my comment back- 2) Can I see your sketchbook? (Me) No, you may not or when I say yes, So and so is a better artist then you!" Me) I know he/she is, thanks. I mean seriously people. Stop. We all know someone out there is better but we all develop differently. The girl who was better had taken art classes and art lessons, while I just look on youtube and go off on my own. I'm basically "self-taught" but I go off and do other things and don't focus on certain things and if I'm bad at it, "OH it's time to practice it." If I had time to take art classes, I mean I would because I like drawing and I feel happy when people tell me my drawings are great when they see them. 3) I HATE when people criticize my drawings and don't help me get better they just complain and complain, Like seriously? 4) and this is my personal problem but when my favorite markers that I bought caps fall off and I can't find them. Then they dry out and I cry about it, but usually when that happens I try and use it before it goes to waste. That's all I have to say for nnooowww.

What he said about talent really touched me. I am obviously not gifted in drawing (like at all) but I really want to draw and I have so many ideas. I try very hard to give life to these ideas but it's just really, really hard to come to something decent. It makes me even sadder when I've been practicing for a few months but I see literally no improvement, even when I compare drawings from when I was kid to now. It really hurts to try your best at something but to see no improvement but what Jazza said really warmed my heart
@awacflr
@awacflr 7 жыл бұрын
Improvement takes longer for some people. You'll get there, just dont give up! Don't let others or yourself discourage you for following art. Art takes A LOT of patience and practice. There's times where I doubt if animating is for me or not and if I'm just wasting my time and money on art supplies I'll never be able to use properly. But whenever I doubt myself, I sit back and remember why I wanted to go into art in the first place. Because I love it! And I knew going into it, that it was going to take blood, sweat and tears, but my passion for it will all be worth it in the end. Don't give up, because your dreams deserve to be sought out after, and you might never be happy that you gave it up, because it was truly what you wanted to do.

Continue to improve but try to stay objective to your own art or the doubts and insecurities will crush you. Instead of thinking "oh wow, this looks terrible" try thinking instead of the ways you can improve your drawings, for example a different technique or maybe check if the proportions are right or not. You could try and look for some basic drawing courses, these places are usually good because they don't influence your art but give you some basic knowledge. Hope that helped and don't give up :)

My sculpture lecturer is literally the only lecturer that understands and supports my stylized style. He even let me do a self-portrait in my style and said I don't have to feel pressurised into doing realism. Realism is good though, you need to learn the basics but that mustn"t be the only thing that can be seen as art.

I agree that manga and anime ARE art. I do think manga/anime should experiment with different styles. Anime can really limit creativity sometimes. I think you should try out some different things, and then go back to your original anime style, not only will you learn different techniques, but then your anime drawings will improve, because the different things you tried out will leak into your current anime art style. Maybe you'll even find your own style this way? Who knows. This is only a suggestion, I'm not here to scream in your face that you should do this, but I do recommend it. c:

Dude. You touched on so many important aspects, I think I broke the subscribe button! I went to art school, and sometimes I wish I never did, because the pretentiousness of 95% of the assholes around me, particularly professors really hindered my ability to believe in myself, and just go for it. The artist alter ego depicted here is like the exact embodiment of the people I was surrounded by for 5 years of my life. Thankfully some time has passed and I'm getting over it, but the road here has taken years of my life to overcome, and has been a huge setback my progress for half a decade. For all of you reading and thinking about going to art school, please learn to differentiate someone who actually ants to help you with constructive criticism, and someone who just has a very exclusive and utopian view on art that will only try and make you just like them, making you forget what you want and who you are.

@FutileGrief

+TheStrawberryShogun You absolutely don't need to go to art school to be an artist. In fact, developing skill and your style is something you'll have to do by yourself in your free time regardless if you are going to school or not, because it's not something that they can teach you. I would recommend finding courses, whether online or close to your community where you can learn some techniques and become involved with the community. If you're already an artist with a good body of work and are comfortable sharing your work online, do share your talent in art communities so you can get feedback and work on that. The thing about art school is that people believe some arcane secrets for success are being taught there, but in reality is an overpriced group of organized knowledge they're teaching you in one space, and students graduate being equally clueless about the art world because on most places, they don't teach you about the business side or a "How to be an artist and not starve to death 101" class. You could check out their program and recreate it yourself with immense (!) amounts of discipline and finding independent courses. I would dare to say, even the business side of things are better taught through specialized online courses or with coaching services. The difference between art and every other career, is that it doesn't really matter if you have that education on your cv, particularly if you're going to be a fine artist. People will pay attention to your portfolio the most, and you will need to build your reputation after that. It's not easy work, but you can absolutely save those several thousands of dollars by having almost extraordinary discipline and do the things I mentioned.

I went through this exact same thing. I mean they literally destroyed my self belief and made fun of me a few times...I never felt i was ever good enough to the point it just froze up and stopped creating..felt like a was paying to be insulted daily..I stopped going in and repeated years that I failed because i was too upset and scared to go in some days.. I now have loads of debt and i didn't even quite finish the degree.. i have3/4 and it took me years..im so lost now.. feel to old to start again and drained to continue.. Before i went i thought i had talent.. even in my foundation i produced better stuff.. Now i dont even know if i am an artist or just a dried up old lady. The experience for me made me feel like a worthless person so i couldnt produce good art when i felt like dirt..But i was so excited to get into uni that i felt i had to put up with it because the alternative was working in a bar or something... The only person i saw do really well who is now a lecturer there was the hot girl that the tutors fancied..She was a good artist but it was weird how she never got any sht and she had a cool french name....

Nikki Fox I feel so close to this comment because it's where I was just a few months ago, for many many years. Please don't ever feel you're too old to start something, even if you have started it many times before. All those thoughts in your mind that come from a place of fear are always influenced by an aspect of society and its expectations on us. Fuck that, entirely! You will find out that they don't even really care that much, so in reality those fears are unfounded and misdirected. Your mind is crowded and I think you owe it to yourself to kick them out of there, because one person is already enough! Really, my advice is fuck them. Fuuuuuuuck them, and if you feel it in your soul, create. Make mistakes, get dirty, make a thousand ugly works of art that will get you closer to that one work that ignites a fire and open Pandora's box. You don't have to show it to anyone until you're comfortable, you don't even have to live off art if it makes you uncomfortable, but If you don't obey your creative spirit, it will crush your soul, and the longer you let it, the more damage it will make and the more years of your life it will take. This is letting all of those fuckers win, and there's only one of you, so you better show us that!. Don't let them win, the best type of revenge is you being successful for all the right reasons and being happy.

Thankyou so much.. im sorry you went through this too.. its like there's this dark side of art degrees that no one talks about.. I went to a village art show thing where people were showing in their houses and i spoke to a women who went to St Martins many years ago.. she started talking about being told she wasn't good and i could see the pain in her eyes..even 30 years later.. she was telling me about trips she wasnt invited on because the tutors were sleeping with certain girls..Its like that whole experience was still with her..But she did have a lovely studio and she was still doing art..I think she married a rich man or something... I totally felt your comment when i saw it..maybe we need a channel for this stuff... i wonder if the difference is our art is us.... like if you are an accountant its not you its your job... what i hate about art is if you are successful everyone thinks you are genius and if you are working at it people think you're a freaking hobo drop out..except other artists..sending love to you right now! fuck your people too! And fk St Martins for making that lady feel like crap..

I'm actually pretty sad I never saw this a long time ago. I have always wanted to draw digitally and my friend got a bamboo for 100 bucks when I was in middle school and I almost got one. one day my middle school art teacher said I should be an art teacher and get better at traditional art and stop drawing "cartoons". without even thinking I did exactly that. again in high school I saw an amazing digital artist and I talked to my teacher about it and again got a "that won't get you anywhere", "go to college to be an art teacher". so again I did. I got through 3 years of my art education degree and quit. I became a makeup artist because I could do what I wanted. and after a year of that I still love it, but this Christmas I have been planning to get my very first drawing tablet. thank you jazza, I credit this decision to your motivation, and I want to compete in one of your monthly contests😁 so wait for me. I hope everything I learned translates to digital. I don't plan on trying to make money off of it, because I think that is what killed me in college. I was told what to draw. so I'm finally just going to relax and treat it as a hobby.

I've put them up for sale, but not all that hard core. By that I mean not in serious galleries. My art is very nice and I'm educated and all and people really like it but it rarely sells. I spent a lot of my youth raising and supporting my family and had to make a reliable living. I did manage to make a living in the arts, my skills led me to work with a sculptor and found myself becoming a very good metal craftsman. I live in NYC now and work restoring antique metal art objects. Happy ending?

I think there's a clear divide which you just illustrated, which I've noticed since I've been in college. You have young art students who are embracing new things like commercialism and new art styles like manga. But then you also have these old tenured professors who have master degrees and belittle things such as manga, digital art, and commercialism, all in the name of a pretentious traditionalist art mindset. I wish I would've known what college art programs were like before I started. Yes the experience was invaluable, but there have been way too many times where I've butted heads with a professor all because they wouldn't let me express my art in ways I saw fit. And I find it ironic because art at its core is about self expression.

art has always been commercial. high art, pop art, folk art. it's always been commercial. it's just a matter of whether you let money influence your work, and if you have 'morals' about that. the idea is very 19th century.

One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing potential be lost in people. Be it from bad choices, a lack of choice, or simply giving up. Not just in art, but all fields of study. You are all born with an immense amount of potential and beauty in your souls and I'd like to personally ask you to never give up on your dreams, no matter what. Success is not financial, it is not social, it is not superficial. Success is emotional, it is reaching your state of mind that is pure happiness. So be good to yourselves and strive for happiness, don't give up.

Absolutely! I'm only 19 but I started designing when I started high school. It wasn't until a couple years down the line when my favorite art teacher taught me that to be an artist is to have no fear in what you are doing, to believe in your abilities as if they are instinctive and take critiques as opportunities for growth, not moments of shame. Once she told me a story about when she was young, I believe she was living in Italy at the time, and she was one of the fortunate children whose parents allowed her to draw and paint on her bedroom walls. One day she decided to paint a mural to fill one of her walls and a couple days later, after she had finished it, she was showing one of her friends and her friend remarked "well what if you had messed up" and it was at that moment that she had realized the notion never really occurred to her that she could 'mess up.' She had no fear and total confidence in what she was doing that the prospect of doing something wrong had never even crossed her mind. It's unfortunate how much we judge people nowadays because its that very judgement that instills fear into people and prevents them from taking the risks which will bring them happiness. If anyone is to take anything from this then I want it to be that there's nothing to fear. You don't have to live up to anyone's expectations but your own.

I thought "i love doing this and getting a qualification in it can only be a good thing" when the reality was that because it had to meet criteria, because i had to simply tick boxes, it almost killed my passion. I quit and didnt seriously pick up a pen or pencil to actively create for two years. one thing that can prevent people from continuing is being told that their art should tick some very restrictive boxes

I had an art teacher ban all manga and comic style art from his class. I found out years later that he did comic covers. I can't speak for him but I think when it comes to learning anatomy and technique, it's impossible to teach someone that's trying mimic without the fundamentals. I wonder if he did anyone a disservice or if someone actually learned how to create forms and discarded symbology because of his savage methods.

Dan Bullock I think that it's important to learn the fundamentals with realistic anatomy, but I think that banning a style entirely stifles creativity and can seriously damage someone's opinions of their own art. I am frequently told that I'm a great artist now, but I still struggle with it because, even growing up, I was always told by family things like, "Why can't you draw /realistically/? You'll never make money from anime style. It's just not good enough." It can be seriously damaging to an artist who is still trying to find their place in the industry. It's good to dare someone to branch out, but people need to be more careful in how they invoke that. :)

The elitist artists are usually those who just graduated from art college (or university) and were brainwashed to think traditional art is the only type of art. My mother has this same mentality. She's a qualified musician and she told me that during conservatory she was brainwashed to believe classical music was the only type of music. The worst part is that they were just ordinary people who liked drawing. That's why I refused to go to an art college. Sure my skills would've improved drastically, but I wouldn't appreciate other types of art.

I love digital art. It's my favorite medium. I love and appreciate traditional art, but I can never conceptualize traditional art as having more than one "layer". This is one of my weaknesses and I'm not saying it doesn't, but I just can't wrap my head around when I have a page/canvas in front of me, that blank surface will always be "the one layer" I'm working on. Photoshop and Illustrator have spoiled me, now THOSE are layers. This just makes me appreciate traditional art that much more though

4:43 EXACLTY! i tell people all the time that tracing in the beggining isn't a bad thing. I traced A LOT when i first started and then i actually got myself to draw without it. And because i've learned how the pencil has to go and different techniques stuck in my head, i now can draw better that before. I am happy to call myslef an "artist" ^-^

When "Artsy/Hipster Jazza" was speaking I had a horrible flashback to my high school years. I went to this art extracurricular class just because I wanted to learn how to use acrilycs properly and also to improve on anatomy and proportion. What I got instead was a speech from my teacher about how manga was not an art style and was never going to be worth selling on a gallery. I didn't care and dropped the class just because I realized that sometimes is better to be self taught rather than having to be around this kind of toxic people. Even if I still do my manga style drawings I experiment with watercolors and I'm currentlly learning about photorealism. I want my projects to be visually unique and if learning by myself is the way then I'm on the right track.

I love that you talked about natural skill vs. cultivated skill. I have to admit, I always enjoyed art but I never put effort into learning because it came somewhat naturally to me. But over time, one of my friends, who struggled for years, surpassed me in skill level. It took me a while to admit that she deserves success a lot more than I do. But I am so proud of her now, and she inspires me to work hard, showing me that every person can improve at what they're interested in. and natural talent certainly doesn't define your work ethic, or even skill level.

It was hard to come to terms with at first, but after a while I started to work super hard to become better, and now I'm really proud of myself for it because there are endless things that I've learned from just trying so hard and pushing myself to become better. For the longest time I was sad that I wasn't just naturally good, but now I'm happy that I could learn so much, and I want other artists to know that too, especially if they're just starting out and/or struggling.

imo the only thing that I don't consider art is Tagging. What I mean by that is when someone takes black spray paint and just writes their name in a fancier way. Just to say "I was here". I feel like it's disrespectful to the city to tag a place in that manner. I don't have anything against Graffiti, I think a lot of it is actually amazing and could be used in various ways, but what I consider Graffiti tends to be more thought out and planned, not just quickly spray painting the name like tagging...sorry not sure how to fully express what I mean. My knowledge of Graffiti is only as a passerby witnessing someones "mark" but I feel that it's not the same thing as tagging.

If you are looking at art schools or schools that offer art classes, DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SCHOOL. Make sure you're not going to an art school that it is for profit school. They are over priced and they are making money off of you! Take it from me, I didn't do much research because I was just eager to attend a college for the first time. I ended up dropping out and now I regret going there in the first place AND I'm also about $20,000 in debt for just one year of being there.

i find that a little hard to believe because Manga and Anime design are taught by a culture with strict practices and execution. Yes, the creativity in the content can be art, but harder in how it is conveyed because they [have to] look according to a rigid style. You go to an anime/manga store and you'll find that they all look the same. This contradicts the one of the important values of art which is self expression of aesthetics and message. To a Japanese person learning to create anime/manga, they are taught to make their work look like everyone else while making their own content. It's rigid as writers using text to tell stories because of language and grammar, but most of their creativity is in the content.

A couple of years late, but THANK-YOU. All these things you mentioned, from trying to teach myself to draw because I had no other avenue to do so, to being told I would never be good enough or to being "reminded" that was wasn't as good as "what's-his-face", and suffering from anxiety, depression, and lack of confidence - I've been there. I stopped drawing for years and always felt like there was something missing in my life until I picked up that pencil again. Now I'm studying Graphic Design and I'm transferring my innate (long overdue) skills to a digital medium and I've never been happier. Still learning (all over again) and struggling to get where I want to be, but you've made me realise that, more than anything, the only thing I need to worry about with my art, is where it can take me next. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, SO much for doing this video. :)
