What a great, simple summary of the Blake's hitch, MRS, and SRT methods all in one. It's not uncommon to use more than one depending on the situation.

I see a lot of people doing a cinch on the spar with zigzag….in essence it’s single line. As in not with a saver, no different than a throw over a union and doings bowline Am I missing something? It’d be easier than the saver , cause it’s a pain to get up tight double line on smaller trees…..but….

Hi Bino, great explanation thank you. Can you tell us which knot you used in the first example. The knot that was connected to the carabiner? Thank you
@BinoH
@BinoH Жыл бұрын
The first example that was tied to the snap is a Bowline. The second example that was tied to the carabiner is a Double Fisherman's.

hi, great explanation. I am considering to start with rope wrench. As I am not experienced with it, I want to have some back up during my learning. I was considering adding Petzl ASAP above the rope wrench, what do you think about it ?
@BinoH
@BinoH 10 ай бұрын
No it's not necessary. It is better to learn the friction hitch properly and make sure that it hold and does not run on you. The rope wench and friction hitch are safe when tied properly. no need for back up.

Don't tie in to anything less than the diameter of your bicep. That's a good rule of thumb. Obviously it depends on the species as well. Maple, Sycamore and Popular are unreliable but oak and beech are very dependable if the tree is healthy. On ascents always be assessing the tree for damage and decay, 👍💪🪓🌲🇮🇪

What if I'm getting higher up in the tree and the diameters of the branches are shrinking. How do I become confident that a smaller branch will hold me and not fail?

Hey Bino Im new to all this and I need to take down two 50 foot oak trees. The local experts (here in Colorado) have quoted me $11-16K which is insane. I even told them they can leave the limbs for firewood. Anyhow, Im going to practice the different tie offs and whats your take on these pole trimmers?? Some 10-15 footers, Im thinking of tying off on adjacent limb and using the pole cutter so in general I might be a LITTLE safer being on a different limb?? I know with a 10 inch blade probably cant cut more than 8in limb but just an idea

just curious what would you charge for such a job (1 tree is in front yard with street access and the 2nd is side back maybe 20 feet from street, neither overhangs house) I know some people love climbing (rock climbing) and this job is a thrill. I've done roof work back in the day and also know working from heights can be dangerous, especially if in a hurry or TIRED

I don't believe the chainsaw on a stick would be safer. Not too long ago I saw a video clip where a landscaper was removing a large limb with one of those and the limb he was cutting cracked and ripped and the limb swung at him smashed his face and ripped open his jaw. If professional tree companies are giving you bids at that much maybe there is a reason for it, maybe the risk of it. My advice is hire a company that has a state license and that is insured. get a few more bids. There are too many variables to say what the job could cost.

@@BinoH Surprisingly I contacted some of the smaller companies (they dont have cranes like the bigger companies do) but got some real quotes in the $2,500-$3,500 range and thats with them leaving the limbs on site. I know some people can climb the side of a skyscraper and make it look easy but I just dont have experience like that

I would rather not recommend the blakes hitch, the main reasons: 1: the movement in the tree, positioning, ascending, descending... 2: the pressure and friction forces on the rope while ascending..."rope on rope" means always abrasion effects on the material i will only use the blakes hitch in case of emergency. i use a mechanical system, the spiderjack 2.1 dyneema, it´s great in handling and movement. And of course, always got 2 lanyards on my climbing belt Stay safe out there.
@BinoH
@BinoH Жыл бұрын
True it's not the best climbing hitch but it is very reliable. I feel that the basic hitches Blake's, Taught Line and Prusik are a good road map to the more advanced techniques. Once you learn the basics move to mechanicals.
