In this context, he meant gambling your pull timer. If you hit your first GCD at 0.5s into the pull, then 1s into the next pull, then 0.3s into the pull after, that's RNG. You want to minimize that because there's literally so little you can do later on in the fight to salvage your GCDs if you mess up the pull timer. In terms of BRD opener itself, it is a lot less RNG dependant in Shadowbringers now. The only RNG you will really get is hitting Pitch Perfect during opener as it comes up, or hitting Refulgent Arrows instead of Burst Shots when they proc. If you do get an RA proc before Barrage, simply move Barrage down 1 GCD in the opener as suggested on the Balance discord. Your dps is pretty consistent.

Pretty much this as a BRD main. There is a situation where you would need to shift Shadowbite as well, due to having to shift barrage, but that situation isn't too crazy. There's also the aspect of just syncing your GCD and being consistent at starting your opener. BRD somewhat has the same timing as DRK doing unmend, because their RA should be cast basically .5s before the counter starts (as the 1 appears basically). If you time it properly you should line up exactly with your tank pull. A consistently done opener will help with mechanics and learning the fight because you'll be doing the same part of your rotation almost exactly as boss mechanics come up. You'll very rarely have moments to mess it up.

New to FF14, but shit like this still absolutely helps despite the fact I don't even have a tank job at max level yet. The principals here carry over to other jobs being played at a high level anyway. I definitely need to get a tank and healer job at level cap before endwalker comes out but I can't really decide which ones to do. Leaning towards GNB or DRK, and probably astro as the healer since it intrigues me the most.

Another reason Plunge is bad in this context (or really ANY oGCD): Starting a pull with an oGCD means you've shifted your entire GCD by 0.5 seconds, because FFXIV has a hard cap on how fast you can cast abilities and weaponskills. The game has a hard set 0.5s CD between every skill, where you cannot cancel the animation currently playing (but are not necessarily animation locked in place) so by pulling with a dash, not only do you screw up the three melees with you, you also mess yourself up.

As with any game though, it doesn't really matter unless you're doing tryhard speedruns or in a "pro free company" that will squeal about losing a GCD and taking an extra 5 seconds to kill a boss. I'm chuckling to this guide assuming he's channelling that "faux leet" energy, but if it's for real and he's encouraging pedantic, toxic, tryhard behaviour from players... nah. I'd rather enjoy my time than waste it taking a game seriously.

Guy in video: *rants about inconsistencies with gcd’s and whatnot* Me, driving home: what did I just walk into? I came here to get a better idea for rotations for DRK (just started two days ago with DRK) and this kinda scared me a bit. I’m a healer most of the time.

As a Red Mage, the consistent opener is very important for me to line up the GCDs as i precast my Thunder spell, doing this incorrectly will screw up my melee combo later in the fight. Perfect example: E12S 2nd stage -> if everything goes well, i finish my second Enchanted Redoublement Combo during the knockback animation, which lets me use the followup Flare and Scorch during the movement to spread or stack. ON TOP OF ALL THIS, later in the fight when i have to move for Basic Relativity, the cooldowns line up for me to be able to do the combo and Displace out into Early Ice with 1 second left. maintaining my DPS. If all of these things don't line up consistently i won't hit these optimal combos and my dps will go down by 2k-3k Almost every fight has little details like this that need a consistent tank opener. If the pull isn't consistent i will likely fail that and my DPS tanks way way down.

RDM main since becoming casual in StB but it's not hard to RDM and that's why I chose it since becoming casual. Get 60 black and white with one higher boom use melee rotation added the rest of the rotation done weave GCDs in and use them whenever you got them. Use Magick'd barier to help healers and on big AOEs done you just made the fight easy. Be smart with rezzing and don't priortize it in hardcore content as your DPS is priority and if people are dying a lot they're not likely to succeed in it anyway. On the contrary was a DRG main previous to that and was good at it enough so that it was so necessary to slow down not to steal the tanks hate even with using enmity reduction skills at the time. People barely knew how to manage DRG at the time though someone made a whole guide on it breaking down the importance of of things and balancing stat weights. At the time you could even be a back up tank on physical enemies in the most ridiculous scenarios like Sephirot ex at the time. Sephirot was notable for pysical damage and DRG had health pools of tanks as well a physical defense and tank mitigation skills at the time to do so. Cannot do this anymore since StB changes since the evened out the defenses and put a lot more changes to bosses. lol. Could solo a lot as Bard with kiting initially too in ARR before they turned the Bard practically into caster and gave bosses abilities where it was necessary to tank them in pretty much everything. A lot however you could repeat your opener and it'd come to you from completing the opener in HW at the time so it's not entirely wrong that people learn their openers but they need to learn to be fluid and change after it. Note that certain things OGCD would have to be reprocced when available compared to the opener when they've yet to be used, They since made melee much less complicated on rotations but tanks aren't actually that hard to learn. Shorter rotations and using things when necessary and they even made it easier then it started off so people wouldn't be afraid to play them and push achievement rewards to encourage people to play them as you need a tank in your parties. If a person isn't confident on tanking melee is the start to building that confidence before they ween into an easier to play class. LoL.DRK has a bit more management then other tanks but they share a lot in common and people need to read their skills to understand them. While Xeno makes them out like your doing it wrong and it's regurgitated information your relying instead of learning when to use it and more then your opener it's not as hard as it's being made out to be. I don't know if they got attacked by FFLogs but it was a great resource for helping realize their possible mistakes and to learn better. Either way that info is recorded there regardless and doesn't have modding to notably cause issues and technically would be one of those parsers in more legit way that SE said was okay back in HW. Also to note everyone should always being doing something. Tanks and healers contribute 30% of the damage to the party so even healers when they got nothing up should be doing something as well.

I'm totally guilty of being a plunge idiot. I always thought the primary goal was to get to the boss and start aggro, hold the boss still, and turn them away from the party in terms of openers, since that's what a lot of other mmos I've played are about. Good to see someone explain why you don't always TBN in an opener and you named one of the few examples of where you would TBN in an opener (TEA). There are always ppl copying it without understanding. Its just coinflipping if they actually take a good one. This is and will always be the case. The thing with tbn is that its just efficient and even with echo it can break but if you would really understand stuff than knowing that drk has a really clunky design to pull (which wasnt thought trough by SE since they released their versions of Openers once...and they were questionable). Every other tank can pull just fine, but drk will always suffer no matter what Be it coinflipping tbn, delaying LS hits out of raidbuffs, overcapping mp when just skipping tbn

I haven't tanked much high-end content, but I do a shitload of roulettes and nobody ever mentioned to me that plunge was a bad idea for opener. I just figured that the gap-closes was for closing gaps, but now I definitely see the benefit to the party's DPS uptime if you start with a GCD and let the boss come center. As a follow up question, is plunge a bad idea for pulling multiple groups of mobs? Or would you want to unmend there too?

100% agree with lining up GCDs, actually depending on where my rotation currently is, I react to mechanics of the boss. E8S for example, I know that once I hit X i have to turn around for the blind because I won't get the next gcd. For me at least, it really helps alot. Especially how encounter are designed in FF. I know what I'm supposed to do on mechanics depending where I currently am in my rotation, and that only works if your rotation is set. And especially as tanks, people will get alot more comfortable when they know you will do the same shit on every pull.

DRK dude who works on openers over here. I wouldnt use this Opener because everything is so insanely delayed that you dont hit the raidbuffs drk really wants to work with. Using unmend is fine but then also Bw before hs. Get LS out asap. Thats the prio. Salted is somewhere in narnia too. A general working opener? Yes. A rdps drk opener with high risks on loosing stuff especially with long term abilities used so late. But not a good one. DRK is balanced around hitting those raidbuffs and with a proper Opener stuff aligns on its own. Also got told this is used in e11s from you. Havent Check but in case this is true. How can this Opener be good of the 2nd ls looses like 2 Hits which is around 740ish potency. Same for salted later

for tank? tank stance>AoE combo>Aoe ogcd>Free Ogcd for all the mob pull use your longer CD first like dark mind,nebula,vengeance and sentinel with your personal cooldown like tbn,heart of Stone,raw intuition(nascent) and you can use reprisal when its fall off usually there's only 2 wall to wall pull, so use the rest of your cooldown with arms lenght then when you got to the boss you do your opener, if not every single thing is up or on cooldown when you on the boss just ignore them from your opener/rotation

Well if a lot of DPS players are like me, I understand why the DPS goes down in mechanics. I personally use only 1,2,3 during mechanics that I am still not confident enough that I will do right. And unforunately I saw DPS players that stop to DPS entirely during mechanics that are hard for them.

its official, Xeno you need to do a video explaining server ticks and wtf you mean by "pull at the same time every time". Is a plugin for showing the server tick a pre-requisite to following all this advice? Is it equally ok to pull right before a server tick as to right after? are boss abilities tied to the server ticks? Why do melee DPS lose a GCD on a plunge pull as opposed to an unmend pull when both are technically ranged attacks? I get that unmend causes the boss to move towards the party a short distance, but a 3 second server tick is a long time, how is a GCD lost with plunge on a timing window that big? I'm having a real hard time understanding most of this video without understanding server ticks. please help a brother out

i know how serve tick works but i have issue explaining it. example tell a healer to give you a regen and every time that regen gives you hp thats a serve tick. also about the plungue opener you do make dps lose a gcd because the boss is not being pull towards them.

I don’t really use Plunge unless I am currently gathering a large pull to the wall, and I tend to give an inquiry to the healer and dps if they are comfortable with it. Would it be wiser to use the ranged shot and close the gap with a basic run and aoe rotation? Or would Plunge be viable in getting in, gaining the aggro and then moving forward?

What has worked for me was to use my CD/Buff timers as an indicator of where I should be in my combo, and ad a way to get consistent with fights as well. Example: In E12S, my 90s Raid buff is up during the opener, shiva, titan, statues, lions, and right before enrage. I know the exact timing at which my 90 second buff would be up, and it’s precise and consistent every single time. I think keeping the oGCDs and Buff/CD timings is the tricky part, once you do so, I think you’ll have an easier time remembering your GCD timings and placements. Ultimately, practice does perfect. You can : 1- hit a dummy for 10-12minutes as many times as your time would allow, and try to make sure your oGCD usage during your burst windows outside your opener are consistent. 2- Get into pf and learn from trial and mistakes, you want to be comfortable at maintaining a rotation while carrying out mechanics. Disclaimer: This advice is coming from a mediocre player who speaking from his limited experience. Take everything I wrote with a grain of salt.

Dude, could you do some content about high ping? Like high-ping friendly jobs, weaving, and things to have in mind when raiding? I ask from the point of view of a player to whom double weaving has been literally impossible due to latency :(

You can still do well playing most Jobs, even drk. Singleweaving feels aweful but its the better option and imo someone to adapts to it properly is a good player :) For easy Jobs i would recommend Low apm ones or slow paced ones. For tanks this would be warrior and pld.

Unmend, plunge, unleash then a def cd if needed. That's my opener...

Lunge into Unleashed is a good opener for mobs. Since the mobs aggro to you on the first monster but unleashed helps keep aggro on you. If you're talking about Trails, Provoke is a good opener or lunge in hard slash. I usually use lunge first if I have it because I'm able to calculate what I should do and my gcds aren't on cooldown so I can react quicker.

Newer player here. Was super confused by the mention of "server tick" since in most games this is basically a universal constant representing how often the server updates the client and is usually multiple times per second. TIL FFXIV players use "server tick" to mean the 3 seconds between certain ability updates (HP/MP regen, DoT ticks, etc.), it is not a universally shared by all units or all abilities. What I still don't know from watching this but what I'm assuming is true is that boss abilities only get cast on intervals of this 3 second tick which begins counting the moment the boss is pulled. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

There is still a difference between server ticks and actor ticks. The mention of server tick for face pulling is that the boss doesn’t react to u getting in range outside of server ticks either, so it can play a part in pull timing if you run in and draw aggro through range instead of damage

If you pull with unmend 0.1s before a server tick, can the boss cast an ability right after meaning you lose a GCD if its an AoE you have to run away from? I was confused by Xeno's example of aggroing then hard slashing 0.5 seconds later and losing a GCD. sounds like in either case if you don't know when the server is ticking before you pull that you always run the risk of losing a GCD and that you should always pull as close to the server ticking as possible. so is all this advice given under the assumption that I have a third party plugin for knowing when the server ticks?

@@yoduh99 As soon as the boss takes damage it will immediately aggro (aka its not tied to any kind of ticks, and it can act independent of ticks). What general server ticks do is basically update basic info like positions and stuff, which is why facepulling can be weird. The boss starting to move towards u at different times, and can cause minute differences in when u start ur first gcd. Actor ticks is when things like hots, dots, and mana regen tick on any individual character. Its jank but a part of the game nonetheless

This is from before changes were made to DRK; carve and spit and abyssal drain share a CD now and delirium is 3 stacks instead of a timer.
