Unbelievably, this hack does actually work. I was camping with four friends and we had some tinned food for dinner, but no tin opener. They were proper tins, not like the one in this video, but I told them anyway that I would open the tins with a spoon, and incredibly, managed to do so. Cue four very impressed and grateful friends, who would have otherwise not had anything to eat. It does take quite a bit of effort, but hunger is a wonderful motivator! :))

Thanks! Just moved and I haven't bought a can opener yet, this came in handy :P. I dunno if you have super-strength or if your can is thin as paper, but I had a lot more trouble opening it than you seemed to do :P Better than nothing though!

It works!!! My brother just managed to do it. Our cans are far thicker than in the video, but with a decent spoon and a lot of strength, he still managed to open the can! It was crazy!

I was searching for remedies to open my can of sardine. I used everything else but no way. Then I watched this video wondering why is the lid so soft and easy. Then I took my blunt spoon and tried for 5 seconds and it opened. Finally a video that works.

While there are people saying there are no emergency situations like this, it can actually be useful in minor emergencies. There's been situations where people go on camping trips or something(for example) and forgot the can opener. Honestly, I don't think they are referring to post apocalyptic emergencies. However, technically speaking, cans and spoons are a lot more common than can openers, especially considering that there are usually multiple cans and multiple spoons, and usually one can opener.
@Shaunemayfield

It’s funny you bring this up. I’m preparing for a camping trip and realize I didn’t have an opener in my kit so I was curious and wondered how to open a can on a trip if I did forget one. So of course this has very practical usefulness!

Thank you so much. As sad as this is, you saved my night. I had resigned myself to crappy TV dinners after being excited to have these sandwiches all day.

Suggest a Swing-a-way can opener, a Swiss Army Knife/Leatherman (lots of effort + sharp edges, but it DOES work!) Or your grandmother's can opener, which probably still works after 60 years.
