I have opened hundreds of rock-hard, ripe Brown coconuts with a 4 inch fixed blade knife and never chipped the blade or damaged the knife at all. I recommend a blade made from D2 or any good tool steel. I have a video posted on my channel with a little bit different method. There are so many levels of ripeness with coconut that people don't realize, but thank you for sharing it's always nice to see how someone else does it also. Green poppers are easy, the hard shell ones make you prove your skills. Great video.

I'm glad to see you demonstrate this technique - and also explain how hard the shell of a coconut can be. I learned your technique on a trip to Mexico in the 80s. It's for sure the best way. I unsubscribed from Lily's channel when I saw her complain about the S1. Between the sand on the coconut husk and the shell, of course her blade chipped - any blade would! Cheers Gabe!

i agree your method of opening the coconut is better than Lilly's. but i have to agree with her that Fallkniven knives are way too brittle to be in the "survival knife" category, you chipped your edge on the coconut! that's proof enough. i have used and abused my KA-BAR (1095) and it's no worse for ware, i even slammed the edge in to a concrete wall a few times (accidentally) while i was cutting some vines off and it was pretty quick and easy to repair, it took me less than 5 minutes.
@gabehumphries54837 жыл бұрын
Dylan Castle I don't think the F1 is necessarily a survival knife more of a Bushcraft knife to me. The S1 is not a very good "survival" knife in my opinion even though it has a 5-inch blade length it just doesn't have the weight to effectively chop. All stainless steel knives will chip while opening a coconut that's why people use cheap machetes. Even 1095 will chip while opening coconuts granted nowhere near as bad as stainless steel. I don't discredit Lily overall, but it's clear that she is out of her environment. I'm originally from the Caribbean myself, so I laughed out loud at the coconut opening video. Notwithstanding that, she has some good material.

H.I.S Survival I think that's part of the danger of being in an ufamiliar environment. I don't know exactly where she was, but she took what she knows from her normal setting and applied it where it didn't belong. It's important to rely on local knowledge when in a strange setting. I guarantee you that if she had asked any local resident, they would have shown her exactly what you did in this video. That's 100% what we do in the Caribbean, and it's the same halfway around the world in Hawaii - all island people know this.

Andy Ho to be honest Andy, I never heard or saw her challenge anyone to make their own vid so I really dont know. but, then again I don't pay attention to that type of stuff. I watch the vids and take the info I find useful & ignore the stuff that is crap. I have not seen 1 channel that I agree w the host 100% of the time. I see guys make massive mistakes (I unsub. to those channels) and no one says a thing buy Lilly gets reamed for everything she does. I almost wonder if there is not just a teeny bit of sexism there or is it that guys are too uncomfortable telling other guys when they mess up. just watch a few 'sharpening' vids for example n you will see some REALLY bad sh!t n no one says a thing. I just cringe while I watch the knife get totalled. if peo don't agree w the way a KZbin host does something unsubscribe & stop watching; that speaks louder than ripping someone up. the more a host gets criticized, the more views they get so it's kinda counterproductive AND if peo don't like her being so called 'rude' , tearing her up is stooping to her level so...jmo

see; now I'm curious n want to go through her vids and read that 'stuff', which, of course = more views.
@gabehumphries54837 жыл бұрын
WarGrrl3 she was lacking in simple basic knife safety skills kinda like she never handled a knife before. The reason I did this video is first I have a ton of coconuts and most people on the web have no idea about tropical survival and that's where all these crazy survival myths start. No one stepped up and said hey wait a minute you're not doing this the right way. Granted this person has to know what they're talking about and there really can not be any argument. I believe in Survival Lily's case there is no argument and clearly her method was the wrong way to open a coconut with a knife. She damaged her knife extensively by using a rock to baton.

2nd video of yours I watched. Not as calm and Hawaii like as the first. LOL... I know a lot of people have been getting on Lilly lately and do get it when its the safety aspect. But for other reasons they should just let it go. She quit her job to do this full time. I'd never give her money or any KZbinr, but if they can get it other ways then good for them. She actually posted that she would only be putting one video out a week now because the money's not there. I commented "OK". Honestly if she doesn't post any I don't care although she's been entertaining though out the several years. I have a new channel to watch (H.I.S Survival). Since I'm new to your channel I have a lot of videos to watch. :-) Again, thanks for the lesson. I hope to make it there one day and open a coconut myself.

Jimmy Survivor according to the health department in this video I open a coconut. Safer, easier and I didn't use a rock. In Hawaii this is a business and you have to have a food handlers permit if you want to open coconuts and sell them. After drinking all of the coconut water and if I wanted to husk this coconut I would just beat it against a rock not beat my knife through it with a rock.
