Everyone be very careful. I took my adapter apart that hadn't been energized for over a day and it still showed 120VDC across one of the capacitors. That can really bite you! Get a resistor to drain off that charge before touching.

It just happened to me when i opened my charger, what can i do to drain off the voltage since i don't have a resistor?
@BarryFence
@BarryFence 4 жыл бұрын
@@imadrabhi5991 You should discharge it through some resistance or you could damage the capacitor. If you can rig up a light bulb with some leads (that are insulated...) you could discharge it through that... Otherwise, it will dissipate over time, but it could be a few days. If you are feeling lucky, you could use a small insulated screwdriver and just short it out in little bursts but it might damage the capacitor. Wear eye protection, though!

Too late, I disconnected mine and after a minute it bit me. Not too bad though, because I touched it with one hand. I then measured the typical voltage 1 minute after disconnecting it, and it showed around 300VDC. The capacitor is reading 400V. Ugh.

Being a complete novice, after removing the outer shell (which was a bit more difficult than expected), I picked up the board without any gloves and it shocked me. So I decided to start moving it using 2 big screwdrivers (with rubber handles, bear in mind) but they must have touched and something sparked. Lucky for me the charger was unplugged (at least I tought of that!). Lesson learned: next time, DON'T TOUCH THE PCB, WEAR GLOVES AND WAIT A FEW HOURS AFTER UNPLUGGING THE DEVICE BEFORE HANDLING IT!!!!

It now works perfectly as a charger for testing laptops as I run a repair business. Thanks once again. I have 4 Lenovo chargers, 3 with broken wires, one that doesn't output 20V. I went on AliExpress and picked up some of the cables you suggested. Looking forward to fixing those too.

Great techniques and advice in this video! Thank you! In my case, I saw a failure of both the output capacitors from a cheap $10 power brick (the type that we're advised in the video to avoid). I blindly replaced the capacitors with a pair that has a higher voltage rating, and they also started to fail due to over-voltage; my 24V supply was putting out over 50V! I haven't verified this yet, but I believe the transformer failed in a high-current use of the power supply. It is often the case that these cheap transformers use copper-coated aluminum wire, which will generate more heat due to higher wire resistance; this can melt the insulation around the wires in high-current situations. When that happens, turns are shorted, you get a higher output voltage than expected, and then electrolytic capacitors go BANG. So, yes, don't buy the cheap $10 power brick!

Great video! Just wanted to post a warning. My LED was always lit meaning the AC cable was not my issue. The cable post DC conversion was the problem. I removed the case and then suddenly the LED does not turn on when plugged in. As soon as I removed the case I smelt something that most engineers would recognize as a shorted/damaged part. I looked all over but couldn't find any damage. I'm wondering if the power supply is rigged to break when opened. Or maybe some cap was shorted during the case removal. Anyway, be careful! Removing the case may make things worse :(

Oh, yeah, I punctured one of the capacitors with the screwdriver when trying to open it ) Hit too hard )) It wasn't working anyway and no visible issues inside, so nevermind. And yes, you can short some components while opening, because there are metal plates inside, that are very close to other metal parts. At least in mine. So if you bend something, it may short.

I couldn't get it open and tried with some force but did not want to gouge the plastic too much. I saw in another video to use Flux solvent on the crack all around the adapter. It appears this is Ethyl Alcohol. I didn't have any , I had Isopropyl and used a dish plate and put the adapter on its side in the plate and poured a little bit of Isopropyl into the plate and used an eye dropper to pick up some and put no the other side of the adapter and the ends also. Waited a few minutes and then I was able to break the seam at one point and then I got the screwdriver in and kept prying and used a kitchen knife to slide up the seam to break and just kept working it until one side was open and then just kept moving it and prying until it was free. Then of course you have to know how to solder , remove the top metal shield which was soldered to the board and then I could unsolder all three wires, noting white black and blue locations. Done in about 20 minutes total. I did not re glue the plastic together I put on two black twist ties. I know this will last a few years and then need to be done again.

Thank you for your support! You have to replace the cable because it's not gonna last long. It will become harder to get contact because due to bad contact and high power those wires will slowly burn and brake. You can use it as a temporary solution. New cable costs about 3-5$ delivered! Is there alternative to using superglue when you put it together? How are you going to get inside when it breaks again? Or maybe just using the superglue in the corners or middle would be preferable?

I opened super glued power supplies many times. That glue is not stronger than the factory adhesive.

I accidentally dropped my bottle on my dell laptop charger on the part where theres this brick thing (idk what its called) and now it wont work. It also makes a noise every time I shake it it makes some weird sound. Do I need a new charger or is there a fix for this?

You have to open it and see what was damaged. But if you're not good with electronics then better buy a new one.

Can you tell me a way to damage a working adaptor without any symptoms ?
@ElectronicsComputers

I think the easiest way is by bending the DC cable back and forth until the internal wires brake.

My AC Adapter is a model PA-90W. Recently it started not working very well and it would need to be at a specific position (the ac adapter itself not the wire). I'm familiar with issyes where there are kinks in the wire between adapter and computer and I'm pretty sure this is not it. Usually the blue LED on the AC adapter is off but when it's on it can be a low intensity blue light or a very bright blue light (when it is bright it is working). So in an effort to make it work I tried 3 things: 1. Unplugging and replugging the triple socket wire that goes from the wall outlet to the AC (this doesn't have any effect anymore), 2. I pick up the ac adapter by the 3 prong cord plugged into it from the wall and I move it up and backwards toward my hand till the AC adapter and wire are upward and tipped back and then set it back down. This also makes the 3 pronged cable slide out and around a bit each time which I'm pretty sure is a part of how this works (this is highly effective in getting the LED light to turn on to the high intensity level and the light on the laptop that indicates it is charging will turn on. However, this is only temporary and the LED light gradually turns off usually and along with the laptop charging light. I believe that the 3 prong cable being not fully in is part of why this works because for some reason it tends to start charging when the prongs are not completely inside the AC adapter) and 3. Just shaking it like in 2. but with my hand around the power brick itself. ^I have been able to get my laptop to continuously charge with all of these things albeit with some difficulty (it takes a long time to work) and I have to keep the AC adapter and wire still because if I'm not careful it may stop charging. At the moment #2 still works and rather well but I haven't been able to get it working again for quite a while. I have not yet looked inside the AC adapter but I would like your advice/diagnosis in this situation. Please and Thank You, sir.

First of all you have to check if the AC socket is properly soldered and have a good contact with the PCB. Secondly, I would check the caps and DC cable. The last one could may have a short. You can simply desolder the DC cable and see how the blue LED indicator changes with and without cable attached.

Did not work that well for me - I could get the screwdriver in, but the case did not pop up as in the video. When I turned the screwdriver around a bit, it just widened the hole and did not open the case. Had to ruin one side a bit to finally make it pop open. It's a Toshiba Satellite PSU, by the way.

Hi, first of all great tutorial! I wanna ask about one thing. The LED on my adapter is of and it doesn’t give any power out. But somehow after a while with it’s plugged to power source, it became hot. Based on this, what is your diagnostic on this? Thanx in advance.
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 4 жыл бұрын
most likely you need to replace capacitors and I'd also recommend checking DC cable for short.

Is it possible that the AC adapter still works (and randomly fails) if some of the capacitors are swollen on top? I'm asking because I have a laptop without a battery, and I'm running directly on the adapter. The thing is, the laptop is turning off randomly, either during gaming or just by watching KZbin, but mostly during gaming. Sometimes it turns off after 4 hours of gaming, sometimes after 30 minutes. There is no pattern, but I would like to be sure that it's the adapter's fault before I open it up.
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 3 жыл бұрын
It could be but first check if your laptop is not overheating. Use some software like Aida64 to check CPU and GPU temperature.
@LukaReeson
@LukaReeson 3 жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicsComputers Ah, I forgot to mention, the temps. are 65-70 C when gaming and 35 C when idle (cpu and gpu), so I'm sure it's not an overheat issue.
